British millionaire murdered at home in 1996 – Wife and daughter charged, but cleared, of hiring hitman, so who did?

2020.04.10 13:36 PottedNick British millionaire murdered at home in 1996 – Wife and daughter charged, but cleared, of hiring hitman, so who did?

It’s December 10th 1996, and in the sleepy West Sussex town of East Grinstead Richard Watson, the 54-year-old millionaire owner of a computer sales company, is returning home.
He shuts the gate to his property behind him but before he’s reached the front door a shot rings out. ‘'No, no, get away from me, not again!' he shouts, according to the testimony of his step-daughter. 'Leave me alone, get away from me'.
He had been shot twice in the neck by a male figure seen wearing a balaclava and jogging bottoms, who authorities would repeatedly identify as a hired assassin. Six months later, Watson’s wife Linda – a runner-up for Miss Scotland – was arrested at Gatwick Airport in a sting operation that simultaneously saw her daughter Amanda (the witness who identified the figure of the gunman and her step-father’s words) taken into custody. They were jointly charged with murder.
The trial date was set for June 8th the next year, but immediately before the women were due to be brought to court the Crown dropped its case and the trial was formally abandoned. In the ensuing years, much of the focus of the case would be on the mother and daughter’s battle for justice, and answers, around their high profile and apparently erroneous detention.
At the same time a suspect emerged, Paul Garfield-Jones, a local antiques dealer who had been charged with handling stolen property from a break-in at the Watson mansion. Richard Watson was due to give evidence against him at a trial and had already been threatened with a stun gun by two balaclava-wearing assailants. The Garfield-Jones connection had been followed up by police within two hours of the shooting and officers had found him washing clothes at his house. Yet that link quickly and inexplicably went cold and the police instead decided to pursue the bizarre hitman charges against Watson’s wife and step-daughter.
Garfield-Jones was later sentenced to 17 years for an attempted shotgun hit (a contract he had undertaken for the princely sum of £200), but in the murder inquiry some complicating factors emerged. In the months before his murder, Watson had been visited by two men in a car who had parked outside the family home and waited for Watson to come out to them (he later told his family the men had broken down, which they did not believe). There were also two break-ins at the offices of Watson’s mainframe renovation company, and another incident where a man on a mobile phone was spotted noting down Watson’s license plate. More outlandish theories involved Watson pushing on unpaid debts by a Moscow-based telephone exchange, and a failed investment in renewable energy. A more plausible suggestion, however, is that there were financial pressures unknown to his family.
Was the murder as simple as Garfield-Jones attempting to stop Watson from testifying? Why then did the police drop such an obvious connection and pursue the far more imaginative line against the wife and step-daughter? Or is there a more complex, shadowy organised crime element lying beneath this story of middle class murder in rural England?
