Shallow Dive: Volume I - the non-fiction days
Welcome to Volume I of Shallow Dive, something I hope to write on a somewhat regular basis. Each volume will focus (shallowly) on a song, compiling all the tidbits of information gathered/translated by various members of this sub, which I hope will create some discussion. If you know some more info about the song, let me know and I will edit it in. So, onto the subject for this first volume, a classic, the non-fiction days.
Basic info:
  • Written and arranged by Toshinari Onishi, who also worked on you.
  • Lyrics by Kanata Nakamura, who also wrote the lyrics for Before Yesterday.
  • It was the lead track to the 3rd mini album Brand New Maid, released on May 18th, 2016.
  • The MV for the song dropped on April 7th, 2016. Currently with 4.7 million views, making it their 6th most viewed MV.
  • More info about composers that have worked with the band can be found here.
Live information:
  • Performed a total of 106 times, to date, making it, also, the 6th most played song.
  • Live debut was on March 26th, 2016 at Sakura-con in Seattle, also the band’s first overseas serving.
  • Fan cam of that here.
  • Most recently played at the first online serving on July 23rd, 2020.
  • As documented on: and may not be complete.
  • There are 2 pro shot performances of this song: the 2017 Studio Coast Shinkiba and 2018 Zepp Tokyo shows, released with the limited editions of the World Domination album and the start over single respectively. Unfortunately, both are OOP, and their YT uploads have been purged as well.
  • The Shinkiba one is the better of the two, IMO. It has the frenetic energy of a closer, as Saiki shouts out her signature ‘Last song!’ and the pyro crew used up whatever is left in the tanks to match the heat of the performance and the scenes of the MV.
  • You can kind of watch it here, via this YT reaction and review (starts around 1:16 mark), with some analysis at the end. .
  • EDIT: I forgot to mention the version from the first online serving, of which there is no extended archive unfortunately. There is also a pro-shot 3 song digest from Summer Sonic Tokyo 2018, of real existance, the non-fiction days, and Domination. It's an excellent performance and can still be found floating around on the internet
Lyrics and translations
I’ve reaped and I’ve eaten what I’ve sown (as translated by bardo_O)
  • Despite not being written by Miku, I feel it fits in nicely with her tendency to be introspective with use of dark imagery.
  • The band wanted a lyrical theme of a strong woman with a hidden darkness/weakness, which the members joked sums up Miku.
  • It also has this wonderfully pessimistic line that I like:
孤独になると疑ってしまう 本当に自分は在るのか
Kodoku ni naru to utagatte shimau hontouni jibun wa aru no ka
When I get lonely, I doubt if I really exist.
Other miscellaneous tidbits:
  • Read the translations of the interviews here, here, and here by u/t-shinji, but a few points summed up below.
  • The band felt that the song represented a new evolution for the band and decided to make it the lead track on the album.
  • The members listen to demos of several songs provided to them, while blanking the composers’ names so as not to be influenced. It could explain why they have so many different composers credited in their early days.
  • Once they choose a song, they are allowed to make some changes to it, as they see fit, and provide lyrical theme requests. So it seems they had some creative control even when they were not writing the songs themselves, yet. Not sure how this fits with the crediting and royalties.
  • See photos of the making of the MV here in an English article.
  • The MV was filmed on a beach near Tokyo, and has been identified. I remember a google maps link was posted, but I cannot find it after an admittedly short googling attempt. Please let me know!
  • It was a very windy and very cold day, with the members shivering in heavy coats and gathered near portable heaters between takes. When the flames came out in the evening, they were repeatedly warned about getting too close to it for warmth.
  • Misa got the worst of it, as her costume has the most exposed skin.
  • Akane (and Kanami secretly too) got so close to a heater that their coats caught on fire.

2020.08.14 18:18 sweetandsourchicken The In-Depth Primer You've All Been Waiting For (feat. TONS OF RECEIPTS!)

Welcome to SmolBeanSnark. Here is our definitive outline with receipts on Caroline Calloway up until now. Please feel free to add your own favorite moments and receipts in the comments. We will continue to update as needed.
Who the F is Caroline Calloway?
Caroline is originally from suburban Virginia. Despite her family’s clear privilege and wealth, she claims she grew up in emotional poverty. At some point she changes her name from Caroline Gotschall to Caroline Calloway because she thinks the latter “would look better on the cover of a book.”
After high school she apparently spends a year traveling abroad but does not acknowledge the privilege of being able to afford this. Then she goes to NYU and begins her infamous friendship with Natalie. After three years at NYU she flunks out.
She applies to Cambridge three times and was finally accepted as a mature student starting in 2013. She claims that her lack of kneecaps constituted a disability so that she could live in a “nicer” dorm. Here she meets a Swedish polo player named Oscar and starts dating him. She makes money by listing her NYC apartment in the West Village on Airbnb. She gets many complaints that the apartment is absolutely filthy.
She gets minor fame on Instagram for documenting her life at Cambridge as a “Hogwarts-esque” fairytale with longform captions. She blows off classes to travel, goes to a lot of balls, parties, etc. She claims she is the first person to post a crying selfie on Instagram. Also is abusing adderall behind the scenes. Most people at Cambridge seem to not care for her portrayal of the school. She spends a lot of money to lavishly decorate her dorm room.
At some point she gets a book deal based on her Instagram following. The book deal is worth $500K and includes a $150K advance. The book is either titled “Schoolgirl” or “And We Were Like”. She advertises it as AWWL but then changes the narrative later when she gets called out for blowing the deal. She says that Natalie wasn’t her ghostwriter, just a collaborator on the book.
Oscar graduates Cambridge and moves to London. They get a flat in London and she spends outrageous amounts of money on stuff like antique Venetian chandeliers. They get two King Charles Cavalier Spaniel puppies. At one point someone claims they were having a party and the dogs pooped on the comforter, so Caroline just shoved the poopy comforter into the oven and kept partying. Eventually Caroline cheats on Oscar. They break up. The puppies are never seen or mentioned again.
As detailed in Natalie’s essay for The Cut, Caroline continually blows deadlines for the book. Natalie, who wants her share of the money, tries to push through and finish the book and Caroline has a full scale meltdown. After the due date comes and goes, Caroline claims that she didn’t write the book because the publishers wanted it to be about boys and she doesn’t want to write about boys even though her entire Instagram is about her relationships with boys. Some people say she didn’t want to admit that a lot of the stuff she wrote was flat out false. Natalie and Caroline have a huge falling out over this. Caroline starts selling pages of the book proposal on Etsy.
She goes quiet on Instagram for a while but is still active on Facebook and Snapchat. Some people have screenshots of things she was doing during this time. She goes to Italy to “detox” from Adderall. At some point she moves back to NYC.
At some point in 2017, Caroline doxxes Oscar’s new girlfriend because she allegedly made a CC fan account. Oscar messages Caroline and asks her to please stop talking about him and his new girlfriend. She responds that he “doesn’t have custody over their shared memories.”
She dates a guy named Conrad for a while. He’s some kind of travel trust fund guy who just goes around doing whatever he wants. They take a road trip to Nebraska. She promises to tell the story of what happened when she saw her relatives there but never does. She and Conrad tell each other “I love you” after two weeks of dating.
She moves to Seattle with Conrad. People who know him say he wants to break up with her but feels bad because she’s financially dependent on him. Eventually, she wants to move back to NYC and do long distance and they break up. She announces this in a post with her flower crown photo shoot of herself and Rachel Cargle. (Yes, that Rachel Cargle.)
NOW WE GET TO THE JUICY PART: THE SCAM! In December 2018**, Caroline has the idea that she’s going to host a world tour of “Creativity Workshops”. She posts that she’s going to host workshops in NYC, Chicago, Atlanta, Seattle, Austin, London, Amsterdam, and Dubai (among other places). She promises things that would clearly require a lot of work but she thinks will be fine, such as elaborate gift bags and personalized letters to every single participant. She orders an entire pallet of mason jars for the gift bags and doesn’t realize how large it is when the truck pulls up to her studio apartment in the West Village. She starts selling tickets for $165 a piece before she has even booked venues.
She starts to realize she can’t keep some of the promises she’s made. She tells her followers that now instead of personalized letters they’ll get a journal. She promises to “cook salads” for lunch for everyone, then asks if they would mind bringing their own lunches because cooking is hard.
A Scottish journalist, Kayleigh Donaldson, starts a Twitter thread that goes viral about how stupid this workshop idea is and how it’s clearly going to blow up in her face. She writes an article about Caroline and this scam for Pajiba. The Twitter thread goes viral. Caroline hosts her first workshop in Brooklyn and then puts a poll on her story asking if people would want to move all of the other events to Brooklyn. The answer choices are “Yes” and “Yes”.
Media outlets start to pick up on this whole ridiculous mess. Caroline backtracks and cancels her tour. She issues refunds. Then, she has a change of heart and uncancels her tour and also sends out an email asking for people who received refunds to actually pay “whatever they think it was worth.” She ends up doing maybe 3-4 events in NYC, DC, and in Austin.
Over the next few months she: buys a bunch of caterpillars but moves them around so much that they die, constantly posts about “going viral as a scam”, claims to be so broke that she buys a $13 aeperol spritz from a bar near her house every night so she can eat the bread and olives for dinner, posts herself jumping subway turnstiles because she “can’t afford” the $2.75 fare, and accepts Venmo payments from her fans who are worried about her financial situation.
Then begins the era of the “tittays.” She starts making these ugly watercolor paintings of her tits and selling them for $40. Then she realizes it could be a cash cow, ups the price to $80 and produces dozens of these cheap ugly things. Many of her fans buy them. She loves her boobs so much she posts a pic of her tits and tags her middle school as the location. She then immediately books a trip to the UK without shipping anything anyone bought.
She goes to Cambridge and claims she’s doing an “artists’ residency” when she’s really just staying in an Airbnb and walking around during the day. She takes photos of herself in a library and claims she wants to do a shoot for Playboy. She paints watercolors using the water from the River Cam. She takes polaroids of the Cambridge campus that she sells to her followers. She attends a ball and brags about doing coke in a church. She goes on a date with a dude, then when she finds out he’s going to be in NYC the next week she books a flight home. She says she decided to come home because she needs to ship the “Tittay” paintings.
Caroline and the Cambridge dude go to a party together and afterwards he tells her that her style is kitsch and he doesn’t like her enough to kiss her, but if she wants to have sex they can. They have sex and Caroline spends the next day on Instagram implying that he sexually assaulted her before she tells the story of what really happened.
She buys a book about Matisse’s cutouts and gets an idea. She traces Blue Nude IV on to color printed paper, cuts it, pastes it on to other printed paper, and starts selling these for $140 or more a piece. Caroline spends almost all of August spamming these “Dreamer BBs” to her followers. Sometimes selling the same one more than once. Many do not get shipped at all. Others are shipped and followers are disappointed when they arrive crinkled and bent. The Pardon My Snark podcast provides a great collection of screenshots.
In early September she finds out Natalie is going to publish an article about their relationship for The Cut. She posts a lot of crying selfies about how much she loves Natalie and how sorry she is that she hurt Natalie and how “if Natalie said it, it must be true.” This is when we get the infamous open mouth sobbing video where Caroline posts a time-lapsed video of herself gluing dreamer bbs and sobbing, with a quick turn to check herself out in the mirror before continuing.
Two days after the article comes out, Caroline gets the news that her father died. Many snarkers at the time feel very sorry for her and take a break out of respect. Caroline does an interview and a photo shoot with NBC News in which she says that she’s upset that Natalie mentioned her threats of suicide in the article. Later, this narrative changes to Caroline being upset that Natlie “erased her mental illness from the record” in the article.
Caroline does a live interview with the hosts of the Red Scare Podcast in Brooklyn. It… does not go well. She inexplicably touts it as a success anyway. She does a 9-part series of Instagram posts that are supposed to reveal something about Natalie and only gets to part 8. This is never mentioned again.
In a fit of selfriteousness, Caroline declares that she will be a vegan for environmental reasons. She continues to eat plenty of animal products including sardines, cheese, and salmon. When people call her out on this she says she’s allowed to have special treats. After a while, Caroline stops mentioning veganism or environmentalism at all.
In October, Caroline goes out to LA and claims she is taking meetings to make a movie about her life. She says that an A-lister is very interested and she claims she went to this person’s house for tea.She goes on a trip to the desert with a guy she’s dating and makes a post about her dad that is a picture of just her torso in a bikini saying that she is sexual and sexy and grief-stricken. When she leaves LA she says she will be back in a few weeks to finalize some deals. She does not return to LA or mention any movie project after this trip.
Caroline starts a Patreon where she promises exclusive daily story content for her subscribers. The Patreon is $2 a month and she gets a few hundred subscribers. She does a bit of close friends content then stops. Does not stop charging people for her Patreon. At one point she says she’s going to go to clear out her deceased father’s home and she will post that to her Close Friends. Then she gets mad that people would “expect” her to share something so painful with them. She rarely mentions her Patreon after this but despite producing no content, she still accepts $2 a month from hundreds of her fans.
For her 28th birthday, Caroline throws herself a $15,000 party at the Brooklyn Historical Society which she calls a May Ball. Many question the amount she spent on this party considering there was a lien filed against her in late October for failure to pay her rent. Her assistant does the real leg work of the party planning while Caroline spends endless hours painting little place cards for everyone who is invited. People are asked to dress like someone or something from art history. Many guests have cool and creative costumes. Caroline wears a cheap looking dress with visible safety pins and unbrushed hair with flowers that are falling out of it. She looks very wasted in most of the pictures.
After her birthday, Caroline goes to spend time in Florida where she makes crass jokes about masturbating next to her grandmother and thinks it’s revolutionary that she’s both a caring granddaughter and someone who has sex. While in Florida she decides she’s going to write a book about “going viral as a scam.” She says she is staying in Florida until the manuscript is done and it will publish in January on the anniversary of her workshops.
Caroline starts 2020 off by ordering two kittens off the internet. They were “on sale” and she got 2 for $3000. They are to be shipped to Florida in February. She posts about how hard “coding” is while putting together her Shopify site.
Caroline returns to NYC and Scammer goes up for preorder. A snarker did a very good summary of the timeline as Scammer evolves. She does some media rounds about the book but tells the press there will be no advance copies and if they want to review it they’ll have to order it. In late January, she announces that Scammer will ONLY be available by preorder and you won’t be able to get it in stores. She does a few offers where if you buy multiple copies of the book you will get dreamer bbs or hats or whatever. She says she will personally sign every copy of Scammer. By March 1 she says “today is the last day you can buy Scammer.”
Despite increasing global panic about the Coronavirus, Caroline takes a trip to Berlin in early March. She posts a lot about sitting in her Airbnb reading Jessica Simpon’s autobiography. She goes to Berghain in a Corona shirt and meets a guy and they stay up all night talking and having sex while high on molly. She thinks it’s special but the next day he’s kinda done with it and she is clearly upset but trying to act cool about it. She hooks up with a Soundcloud rapper from Twitter and thinks she’s cool because she hooks up with guys with tattoos.
After Berlin, Caroline returns to Florida. Her mother rents her an Airbnb and the cats are there. She is supposed to be in quarantine after returning from Europe but instead she goes to the grocery store because her mom bought the cheap brand of olive oil. At one point she strips the sheets off the bed and then sleeps naked with her cats on the bare mattress. When the two weeks are up, Caroline’s grandmother moves to her mother’s house so Caroline can stay in grandma’s condo.
Caroline says Scammer is ready, but the printers have now closed due to the pandemic, though she never discloses which printer she planned to use. She decides she’s going to write a three-part response essay to Natalie’s essay called “I Am Caroline Calloway”. She puts it on a website ( and puts it behind a paywall. Says anyone who purchased Scammer can read the essays for free. Everyone else is charged $10 and she says she’s going to give all the money to COVID relief. She says she will put one part up every Tuesday for three weeks. After the first part of the essay is posted and is 6,000 words rather than the 15,000 words she promised, she posts a full frontal nude to Twitter as an “apology.” She posts part 2 of the essay and does media rounds about donating $50,000 to COVID relief. Then she waits a few weeks, posts part 2.5, waits a few more weeks and posts “Part 3 Part 1”. The essay is never mentioned again.
The attention high of posting a nude to Twitter goes to Caroline’s head. She starts an OnlyFans account and charges $50 a month. When people ask why her price point is so high, she states that her “cerebral, softcore porn” is unmatched and that she is probably the only OF user with a Cambridge degree. Many established sex workers take this opportunity to dunk on her by posting their hotter, more artistic, and less expensive OF accounts. She also takes this time to tweet an antisemitic meme and pretend she didn’t know it was antisemitic.
During this time, Caroline starts dating a 20-year-old chef she meets from Twitter. At some point he comes to reddit and answers some questions about her including that she’s not really a keeper but he’s having fun. Later, his ex comes to reddit and posts screenshots of him saying he’s not that into Caroline. Caroline tweets that her pussy is so “bomb” that she changed his mind about her.
In June, Caroline posts on her story that she’s taking a break from Scammer because of the BLM uprising. Then she says it will ship at the end of June, but since she can’t sign the copies she will make stickers to come with the books. She posts photos of herself at the post office in a fairy costume at the beginning of July but does not clarify if these are the books or the stickers that she is shipping. In mid-July Scammer is still available for preorder.
Toward the end of June, Caroline does two back-to-back interviews on the same day. The first is an interview with the Cambridge Union in which Caroline insists that her primary income is from OnlyFans, doubles down on a racist Coronavirus meme she posted, and gets mad about communism only to admit she doesn’t really know what communism is. She says the interview went well. Then, she goes on to do Ziwe’s “Baited” show. She says she is the only person to have read James Baldwin’s “If Beale Street Could Talk”, says cancelling someone for a hate crime would be the same thing as a death sentence, calls Layla F. Saad “Layla Safad”, asks for ally cookies, and then asks Ziwe to say something nice about her because her manager is mad that she’s doing this interview. Afterwards, Ziwe gets a lot of positive attention because the interview was such a trainwreck and Caroline pretends she is in on the joke and it went well for her. Eventually she gets called out on Black Twitter and posts crying selfies about a depressive episode which is miraculously gone the next day.
Toward the end of July, a snarker notices that her website now says Scammer will ship August 31st. A week later, Caroline posts that preorders are still available. Another week later she posts a video to her story about how she is “reworking” Scammer because 2019 is no longer the “worst year ever” and now the book is going to be about 2020, despite the fact that she advertised that the book would be about the scam workshop and her father’s passing and the Natalie article.

2020.08.14 14:14 House_of_Suns /r/QOTSA Official Band of the Week 15: SCREAMING TREES

You know how your mom never, ever, ever stops talking about how painful and difficult your birth was? How each time she talks about it, it gets longer and more painful and more detailed and more awful? And how that long and difficult experience makes you indebted to her forever? And how when she tells that tale at Thanksgiving every year with three-too-many Chardonnays in her you feel the bile and anger rise?
What, just me? Goddammit, Freud, you are ruining my sex life.
This week’s band went through a truly difficult and painful genesis. They strove for success and fought themselves all the way. The band peaked just as they were coming apart, and the breakup was ugly. There were drugs (a lot more than six). Worse, there was heroin. And no, not the Wonder Woman kind, that’s spelled differently. There was alcohol. There were binges and mistakes. There was a car crash. Then there was another one. There was a feud with Liam Gallagher. OK, that shit is totally understandable. Wanker. There were brushes with greatness. Steve Fisk, Chris Cornell, and our ginger savior all played a part.
Birth is a difficult process. I should know, because I gave birth to a kidney stone once, and I am never letting that fucker forget it.
Today we will take a dive into a painful experience for everyone involved, full of regret and mistakes. But that suffering produced some amazing music, was the bridge between Kyuss and QotSA, and introduced the world to the ashtray-eating, heroin-shooting gargoyle himself, Mark Lanegan.
That’s right: this week’s band is SCREAMING TREES
(Oh yeah, that’s a Facebook link alright.)
About Them Screaming Trees hail from the pacific northwest, that Mecca of Grunge. But what people tend to forget is that this band was old before Grunge was actually a thing. Their first four albums - over half their official discography - dropped between 1986 and 1989, and went largely unnoticed outside of the local scene.
Sure, if you ask a hard core fan, they will tell you that you don’t know the band unless you have listened to their 1986 debut album Clairvoyance, if only because Steve Fisk produced it. Even Kim Thayil of Soundgarden loves the raw power of the album. Much like The Velvet Underground, early Screaming Trees music is more important because of how it influenced artists in the Seattle Scene, rather than the impact of the music itself.
The band - consisting of Lanegan summoning Cthulu on vocals, Gary Lee Conner on Guitar, his brother Van Conner on Bass, and Mark Pickerel on drums - signed a record deal with SST (Solid State Tuners, yeah, I looked that one up for you) and quickly released Even If and Especially When in 1987, Invisible Lantern in 1988, and Buzz Factory in 1989. All three albums underwhelmed and brought an end to their contract. The band did cut their teeth on the indie circuit. After a van wreck in Florida in 1989, the band almost collapsed. (Side note: who would have thought anything would be a complete wreck in Florida?)
Though the band had garnered something of a cult following by touring all across the US, the big break eluded them. We know that the Seattle scene was an intimate one, and everyone knew each other. Screaming Trees jumped from SST to legendary Seattle label Sub Pop for one EP, Change Has Come. Even though this was a modest success, the band made the decision to seek some formal management and ended up turning to Susan Silver, who managed Soundgarden and was then the wife of Chris Cornell.
Silver - and Cornell - turned out to be exactly what they needed. Things began to turn around when Silver convinced Epic Records to take a gamble on them. Epic was the Sony-owned label that had released Michael Jackson’s Thriller. They had major acts in their stable, including Culture Club, Wham!, the Clash, Living Color, Ozzy Ozbourne, and of course Pearl Jam. Epic saw the growing music scene in Seattle and, tipped off by Silver, snapped up Screaming Trees.
This was the big time.
This was what they had been working for.
All they had to do was not screw it up.
If you want to dive into their discography, a great place to start is with their fifth album, and the first one on the Epic label, Uncle Anesthesia. Screaming Trees knew that Epic was their big shot, and that they had to create something great. After dipping a toe in the water with Epic with the EP Something About Today, they knew that they needed an amazing producer to sharpen them in the studio, just like Steve Fisk had done on their debut.
Cornell and Silver recommended Terry Date, who had produced Louder than Love. Cornell also volunteered to help produce the album and do backing vocals. Incidentally, Date would go on to produce Soundgarden’s monster album Badmotorfinger that same year.
Uncle Anesthesia (despite some truly disturbing album art) went on to actually have a song - Bed of Roses - chart on the radio. But it was not quite the hit album that anyone in the band had hoped for. Drummer Mark Pickerel called it quits and left the band and was replaced by Meg White Barrett Martin. After another van wreck (Seriously? WTF? Twice? Only one guy in the band is named Van) -- this time in Wyoming -- the band had to cancel a bunch of shows. Lanegan had always been a drinker, but this second wreck pushed him deep into the bottle. Bassist Van Conner temporarily quit the band to tour with Dinosaur Jr. It seemed like Screaming Trees had missed the free throw. They’d bobbled the ball. They had dropped the pass. They didn’t do the thing. They didn’t sport the sport.
But there was some light at the end of the tunnel. Or, rather, moving pictures. Or maybe both. See, it turns out that the band should really have been thinking of going to the movies instead.
Screaming Trees may not have had the Kool-Aid-Man -Runs-Through-the-Wall breakout hit they wanted with Uncle Anesthesia. But what they had after five full albums was credibility. They were the band that other bands knew and respected. They had a very strong cult following. They had modest airplay and a great record deal.
And with the movie Singles, their long, protracted and painful journey from scuffling bar band to genuine breakout artist finally occurred. The 1992 love letter from director Cameron Crowe to the Gen X Seattle Music Scene has all kinds of inside jokes in it. Pearl Jam Bassist Jeff Ament let actor Matt Dillon wear his clothes for the authenticity of his character. Chris Cornell wrote an early version of Spoonman for the film as well as Birth Ritual and Seasons. Pearl Jam wrote Breath and State of Love and Trust. The Smashing Pumpkins wrote Drown. Alice in Chains and Soundgarden both had live performances in the film. Crowe knew all about the music scene in Seattle and knew the credibility that Screaming Trees had with all the artists in the film.
And because the soundtrack came out on Epic Records, the label also had a vested interest in the success of their own Grunge artist. The Singles soundtrack was released in June of 1992, three months before the movie came out. It built massive hype and went platinum. Epic, with Crowe’s blessing, made sure that Screaming Trees got a huge place of prominence in the movie soundtrack. Nearly Lost You, the single from the forthcoming Screaming Trees album, got heavy radio rotation. Expectations soared.
This was a massive problem for the band.
Screaming Trees had been all about the struggle. When they finally got national success they just did not know what to do with it. Having finally been born, they were in real danger of being abandoned, much like my aforementioned kidney stone. It just kind of sits there now. Lazy bastard.
Lanegan’s drinking and the pressure for success made the creation of their sixth studio album, Sweet Oblivion, a chaotic experience. He would disappear for days during the recording process, come back hung over and make up lyrics on the spot. Half-written songs without titles were workshopped and recorded rather than rehearsed and polished. But somehow the album got made. Sweet Oblivion dropped in September of 1992 and the strength of the massively hyped Nearly Lost You drove unprecedented sales. They weren’t playing clubs anymore; they were playing stadiums. But this tour pushed Lanegan out of the bottle and straight towards Heroin. And not ‘heroine’ like Black Widow, I mean Black Tar heroin.
The punishing tour schedule and equally if not more punishing drug use took an incredible toll on the band. When it came time to try to follow up on Sweet Oblivion, the mojo was gone. Screaming Trees had never had any problems creatively until this time. Gary Lee Conner called the time after the tour “ of the darkest periods of my life.” If the pressure to create Sweet Oblivion had been big, the pressure to follow it up was enormous. To the band, it was like trying to create the follow up to GTA V. Or Skyrim. Or Half-Life 2. We’re talking turn-coal-into-diamonds-in-your-ass type of pressure. Gary Lee Conner and Mark Lanegan had always collaborated to make the band’s music, but Lanegan was the clear creative force. Conner could not do it on his own, and Lanegan was too busy dancing with his Feel-Good-Hits-Of-The-Summer, if you know what I mean.
It got so bad that Van Conner told Lanegan that he was kicked out of the band, and that they would be seeking a new singer and a new band name. Lanegan somehow convinced Conner to give him one more chance. Screaming Trees went back in to the studio and squeezed out one more album, Dust. It is a solid recording with some good tracks but it came out in 1996, four years after their last release.
The band toured heavily in support Dust. At one point in 1996, they were touring with Oasis, and got into it because Liam Gallagher called them ‘Howling Branches’. Somewhat sneakily, Van Conner whacked Gallagher with his bass guitar during an energetic performance. I mean, who doesn’t want to hit Liam Gallagher? That face is just so punchable.
Anyway, here’s Wonderwall.
Looking to augment their live sound, they added ex-Kyuss guitarist Joshua Homme as a touring member. Yes, that’s right: JHo was Alain Johannes before Alain was Alain. Homme was a great hit with the guys in the band and managed to patch some of the cracks between them. But this was temporary at best.
Following the Dust tour, the band went on extended hiatus. Their deal with Epic had come to an end. They tried to record some new tracks in 1999 but very little came of it. They officially called it quits in 2000.
Mark Lanegan joined QotSA the same year, reuniting with Homme. Their music, the product of so much conflict, does stand the test of time and is worth a listen.
Links to QOTSA
Much of Screaming Trees roots (pun 100% intended) are intertwined with that of QotSA. Josh Homme himself was a touring rhythm guitarist for the band from 1996-1998.
Then of course there is the most obvious connection, that being the ever powerful presence of satan himself Mark Lanegan. This man has toured and recorded with Our Boys for five of their seven albums, enough to be a full member in his own right. And even if you’re new, and you don't know him by name yet, I can bet that you’re enjoyed that raspy vocal delivery on many a QotSA track without even knowing it.
The other members also have some slight connections to either Josh or his ever changing entourage of musical monarchs. Lead guitarist of ST, Gary Lee Conner, has released music featuring our ginger Elvis. His brother Van Conner was the first studio bassist for QotSA, since his basswork can be found on both the Kyuss / Queens of the Stone Age EP and the Gamma Ray EP.
One of the two drummers of Screaming Trees has also been touched by the holy hand of Homme. Barrett Martin was one of the many contributing guest artists on Rated R, providing some percussion, steel drums, and vibraphone as needed on The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret, Better Living Through Chemistry, Lightning Song, and I Think I Lost My Headache.
This band was truly well entwined with the one we all know so well. I could hardly be-leaf it! Sorry, im really branching off with these tree puns. Man, I'm such a sap for these. I’d come up with more, but I think I'm feeling a bit stumped.
If you made it this far, please, do not downvote the post because of my terrible jokes, I’ll be back on medication to avoid them in the future. At least I will if it stops giving me kidney stones.
Well, one thing is clear: I’m still better than Liam Gallagher.

PROGRAMMING NOTE: Most of you know the homie SaintRidley has been recapping the Observers from the 1980s (and if you don't know, now you know). Anyway, he got blasted by storms in Iowa the other day and has intermittent internet and asked me to pass along word that he won't be able to post the latest issue of the 1988 Rewind this week. Hope everything's okay with ya dude!

  • Dave opens the issue with some high praise, a rare thing for the top story. But this week's episode of Raw was the first time WWE showed real effort in months, with a clear plan to build a Raw vs. Smackdown storyline and to make the brands as distinct as possible. Raw felt like a completely new show, starting multiple new storylines that hint at long-term booking (we're so used to WWE disappointing us nowadays that it's kinda cute to go back in time and see someone buy into the false hope of improvement like this). They also had a super hot crowd, which helped a lot. The ratings also saw a spike this week, due to fans wanting to see what Raw looks like with Bischoff in charge. The announcers were moved away from ringside and stationed near the stage, similar to the old Nitro set. During the matches, the arena was darkened to give it a more old-school feel. Things felt more spontaneous and less predictable than they have in ages. The European title was done away with, unified with the IC title. Dave feels the belt was useless the last few years anyway.
  • The show featured DX reuniting, but ended with Triple H turning heel and giving Shawn Michaels a pedigree. Dave expects it to lead to Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels at Summerslam, but we'll see. This also necessitated Triple H moving back over to Raw, and in exchange, they moved Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman over to Smackdown at the end of the show. Eddie Guerrero had a match with The Rock and also had a segment where they went back and forth on the mic. It was the most confident Eddie has ever been on the mic and he held his own with Rock and came out of the night looking to be a bigger star than ever. The show wasn't all good though. They had a segment where they put D-Lo Brown and Shawn Stasiak in the ring and Bischoff berated them for being boring and buried them for trying to wrestle, which Dave thinks sucked. The DX reunion followed by Triple H's heel turn blew through potentially weeks of storyline progression in only one hour, but that's typical these days. But Dave thinks of all the potential revenue they could have made on DX merch if they'd been given a chance to have even a short few-week run, but alas. He also thought the announcers playing dumb (like Jim Ross having to pretend not to know who the Island Boyz were during their debut, despite the fact that he's written about them a million times in his weekly column). Also too much backstage stuff, which is fine for TV, but sucks for the live crowd when they bought tickets to watch half the show on the TitanTron. But overall, it was the best Raw in a long time and the first sign that maybe WWE's latest reboot is going to mean real change. And that's the top story. Raw was actually good for once and it's the biggest news of the week.
WATCH: Triple H turns on Shawn Michaels - 2002
  • daprice82 Editor's Note: No one is going to care, but I have a story about this Raw. At the time, my girlfriend (now-wife) and I were in Peoria, IL for the 2nd annual Gathering of the Juggalos! We were 19 years old and drove there from Memphis in my shitty ol' Chevy Blazer and spent the weekend woop-wooping it up. Well, that Monday afternoon, we left Peoria to drive home. We got maybe 30 miles out of town when I realized that my previously full gas tank was almost empty. Pulled into a gas station, confused, but filled the tank again, and drove on. Watched the tank slowly drain as I drove along and within 30 minutes, I was on E again. I was losing gas somehow. Pulled off an exit and stopped at the single nicest truck stop I've ever seen. This place had everything. It was a gas station, connected to a Subway, with a lounge area that had recliners, full showers, washers and dryers, etc. If you're gonna be stranded somewhere, it was the best option. I ended up calling my dad and he drove 7 hours to come pick us up. So while we waited, my girlfriend and I spent the rest of the day into the night, hanging out in this lounge, sleeping in the recliners, and watching TV. And low and behold, they had the TV on Raw that night. I remember I was dozing in and out and I remember waking up when I heard the DX music hit and groggily staring at the TV like "wtf?" And then I saw Triple H turn on Shawn and was like "Whoa!" and then I fell back asleep and that's all I remember.
  • WWE announced that it's re-evaluating its quarterly and annual business efforts due to lower-than-expected revenue this year, stemming from PPV buyrates and live attendance plummeting. To keep the company in the black, WWE is making $20 million in budget cutbacks. Most of the cuts are coming from administrative expenses, but the developmental program is going to be hit hard (more on that in a bit). For next quarter, WWE is predicting an overall profit of $1.5 to $2 million. But that is a bit misleading because that figures in the $3.5 million settlement from the PTC lawsuit. If not for that settlement, this quarter would be the first money-losing quarter since 1997 (assuming you don't count the Q1 of 2001, when they had all the massive XFL start-up costs). Plus, they're running twice as many house shows now than they were the same quarter last year, and the numbers are still that bad. There's a ton of year-to-year comparisons here, which is super fun if you're a numbers person but TL;DR - business ain't great.
  • So what about Japan? Business there is an interesting story also. NOAH has surpassed NJPW in average attendance per show for the first half of 2002, which shows just how staggering of a collapse NJPW has had. The biggest success story of the year has been AJPW, which was on death's door a little over a year ago, with the entire roster jumping ship to form NOAH and the company lost its television deal. It's a miracle they survived at all, much less become as hot as they have this year. The reason, of course, is Keiji Muto (and to a lesser extent, Satoshi Kojima), both of whom jumped ship from NJPW at the beginning of the year and immediately gave the promotion a huge shot in the arm, spiking live attendance by nearly 70% and tripling merch sales. Meanwhile, NJPW is still stinging from those losses, plus they ran Riki Choshu out of the company, made Tadao Yasuda IWGP champion which was a huge flop, they have no good foreign talent, their junior division is stale as can be, and current champion Yuji Nagata is still trying to get his momentum back after a humiliating MMA loss to Mirko Cro Cop on New Year's Eve.
  • So about those developmental cutbacks. WWE cut ties with Les Thatcher's HWA promotion and also dropped the contracts of several developmental stars there. Among the names cut: Steve Bradley, EZ Money, Jon Heidenreich, Mike Sanders, BJ Payne, Horace Hogan, and several others you probably never heard of. HWA wrestlers Lance Cade and Charlie Haas are being reassigned to OVW, which will now be WWE's only developmental territory. Others, like Shannon Moore, Victoria, and Barry Buchanan are expected to debut on the main roster soon and were kept. In 2001 fiscal year, WWE spent $1.1 on developmental costs and had relationships with 4 promotions: HWA, OVW, UPW, and IWA Puerto Rico. Now we're down to one, with Jim Ross reportedly ordered to cut that developmental budget in half. Dave doesn't like this. With WWE being the only game in town and in need of new stars more than ever, he feels they should be expanding their developmental system rather than shrinking it. Creating new stars is vital to the future of WWE and limiting themselves to one promotion with a pool of only a dozen or so people seems short-sighted. He also disagrees with some of the people who got cut. Not everyone in developmental is going to be a star, but some of them at least deserved a shot (namely Steve Bradley, who had been there for 3-4 years, is still in his twenties, is a good worker and strong promo, but never got a chance on the main roster because he doesn't have the right look). Why some of those people were released while Jackie Gayda and Chris Nowinski are stinking up the ring on Raw is beyond Dave. He also thinks Les Thatcher had a pretty impossible job. He was given a roster full of wrestlers that were mostly leftovers from WCW. Young guys who came out of WCW's Power Plant and worked a fast-paced WCW style that doesn't apply to modern day WWE. Then they had Thatcher, Danny Davis, and Jim Cornette train these guys. A bunch of old school veterans training these young guys in the ways of 80s wrestling. So now they learn a whole new style....which also doesn't apply to modern day WWE. It's a broken system. Anyway, everyone who was cut has 90-day non-competes. Word is TNA is only interested in Mike Sanders, out of the names released.
  • WWE Vengeance is in the books headlined by one of those classic matches that can single-handedly make a show. The Rock defeated Kurt Angle and Undertaker in a triple threat match to become the first 7-time WWE champion, although Angle was clearly the one who had another star-making performance. Dave nitpicks the fact that Rock pinned Angle (rather than the champion Undertaker) to win the title, but he'll wait and see if it leads to anything storyline-wise first before criticizing it too much (it leads to nothing, turns out it was just a cheap way to get the title on Rock without Taker having to do a job). But it was an excellent match that gets 4.5 stars. Most of the other matches were good too, though some of the booking was weird and doesn't seem to make long-term sense. They teased a feud between the Raw and Smackdown announcers, which Dave thinks is fine so long as it stays verbal. None of us needs to see Jim Ross or Michael Cole in matches. Dave also gives Tazz credit for improving greatly in his commentary role over the last year. He sucked when he first started but he's the best color commentator they got now. They had the first face-to-face meeting between Angle and Lesnar, which is a subtle tease to what Dave expects to be a big time feud in the future. John Cena pinned Chris Jericho in a match that exposed how green Cena still is and Jericho wasn't able to carry him to anything good and the crowd couldn't have cared less about the rookie. RVD beat Brock Lesnar by DQ to retain the IC title. RVD was super over since they were in Michigan. Bad finish but I guess they didn't wanna give Brock the IC title since he's almost definitely winning the world title from Rock in a month. There was a forever long segment with Bischoff and Stephanie trying to woo Triple H to sign with their respective shows. Anti-Americans won the tag titles from Edge and Hogan. That's basically it.
  • We have a section called "Treatment of Minorities Within Pro Wrestling" by Todd Martin (presumably the same Todd Martin from the PWTorch?). The piece touches on wrestling's past portrayals of race and the false impression that things have gotten better due to the success of people like The Rock, when in reality, the racism is just more subtle. Martin takes a look at WWE's hiring processes. Very few minorities have come up through the developmental program, but it's hard to say if that's WWE's fault. Maybe there's just not many minorities trying to break into the business that way, there's no statistical evidence either way. But you can look at the wrestlers they chose to hire from WCW and how they fared in the WWE system. Midcard comedy wrestlers like Shawn Stasiak got a chance but not midcard comedy wrestlers like Norman Smiley. Nepotism got Horace Hogan a contract, but it didn't do anything for Stevie Ray. Examples like that. Or the Luchadores. Martin argues that, with all the talented Hispanic wrestlers WCW turned into stars, it's inexcusable that so few of them have even gotten so much a developmental offer from WWE. And the only ones who did were the ones fluent in English, which you can argue for. Can't argue size either. Someone like La Parka dwarfs over Crash Holly or Spike Dudley, but WWE has no interest. Wrestlers like Psicosis, Juventud, La Parka, Silver King, and others helped carry WCW through some of its most successful years and none of those guys even got a glance from WWE. Martin asks if Booker T's current jive-talking gimmick is any better than his early GI Bro or Ebony Experience gimmicks? Especially when they have him on TV hotwiring cars and doing stereotypical criminal shit like that? In regards to Eddie Guerrero's current Mexican stereotype gimmick, even Jim Ross recently said that it's taking Hispanic relations back 25 years. If the Booker T or Guerrero characters were portrayed on a normal network TV show with a majority-white cast, they would be seen for the racist caricatures that they are. Martin ends the piece by saying he doesn't believe WWE's decision makers are overtly racist. It's just that the company has created a hierarchy of implicit beliefs about how different types of people are portrayed and they may not even realize that they've built such a system.
  • Dave adds his own "editor's note" to the end of this piece and says he chose to publish it because of the detailed research and data used and found it a fascinating article that deserves discussion. Dave disagrees with some of it though and argues that some of it is just a difference in philosophy. For example, WWE tried the Lucha Libre experiment before with the Superastros show and crowds were dead for it. WWE and WCW had very different fanbases and presented different products because of it. So it may not be so much racism in that case as it is WWE fans have never shown any interest in that style of wrestling. He also argues against some of the examples Martin used (for instance, Stevie Ray was considered by WWE but he was already in his 40s and was never the caliber of worker as his brother, which is why they passed). But that being said, Dave thinks other parts of the piece make some interesting points that are well worth a read.
  • TNA week 5 felt like a whole new product due to the heavy influence of Vince Russo. We'll get into that later, but for now, buckle in, we've got a few paragraphs of TNA drama to get through. The first 4 shows presented a product with an emphasis on hard work and long-term angles. This week featured the classic Russo recipe of crash TV and constant, edgy swearing, in an attempt to market "to that 15-30 age group male demo that hates women because they can't get dates and enjoys seeing them harassed and abused." The show ended with a big injury angle to Scott Hall, which is all well and good and might get people interested in next week's show, except it came on the heels of multiple other "serious injury" angles during the same show and by the time Hall did it, it was something like the 3rd stretcher job of the night and it felt meaningless. Same with every promo being filled with curse words. The whole show was yet another example of why Vince Russo needs someone to filter his worst instincts. In this case, that should be Jerry Jarrett, but he was away from creative dealing with budget and legal issues all this week (gonna hear a LOT more about that soon). On that note, just based on very rough, preliminary PPV buyrate figures, production costs, etc. Dave estimates this company is already about half a million dollars in the red, and that's not counting the significant startup costs they have yet to recoup, with estimates that the company is currently losing about $120,000 or more per week.
  • As of this week, TNA's budgets have been slashed. They've also moved tapings to the smaller and cheaper Nashville Fairgrounds location and signed a 3-month lease. It's reported that switching buildings will save $27,000 per week. They're also eliminating pyro, cut new deals with the production crew, and will be flying in fewer stars, relying mostly on people that can drive. They also don't plan to use managers, will cut back on the TNA girls, and will be using Ken Shamrock and Scott Hall on alternate weeks, since they're the two highest paid guys and it's expensive to have them both on the same show. The Fairgrounds building has been used for wrestling tapings before and never looks good on TV, but TNA is insisting they can dress it up to look good. The budget cuts are expected to be so heavy that TNA's new break-even point for PPV buys will be 20,000 per week instead of 50,000. Dave thinks 20,000 is a much more attainable goal, but if it comes at the expense of the product looking minor league and low budget, it's gonna fail. The building also has no air conditioning and with TV lights, it's going to be brutally hot during summer months. Jerry Jarrett has been posting frequently on the message board and admitted that they weren't anywhere close to the 50,000-buys-per-week they needed. Here's a post Jerry wrote explaining their plans for the company and the new, Russo-iffic direction:
Jeff (Jarrett) and I are wrestling purists just as many fans here. The difference is that we have put up everything we have in our effort to present an alternative to sports entertainment. Our plan was simple. We believed that there were 50,000 wrestling fans who would pay $10 per week, or $40 per month to have an alternative to sports entertainment. This was based on the fact WWE has from 300,000 to one million fans of sports entertainment who will pay $35 per month to see their product. We were well aware that production values, talent, storylines, content, etc. were all factors that could negatively effect the buy rate. We still thought the market would support us enough to make the plan successful. We are finding that many of the wrestling purists did exactly as I did ten years ago, and that is, go on to something else. We are finding that there are many fewer fans who really want an alternative to sports entertainment than we anticipated. Therefore, we can either attempt to attract a few of the WWE fans, or pack up and go home. We have risked everything in our venture. Therefore, not because of our personal taste, but out of necessity, we are compromising our wrestling purist instincts and attempting to create a broader fan base. ECW did a great job of creating a product for the hardcore wrestling fan. The simple fact was that the base of their fans was not sufficient to keep them in business."
  • Ray Gonzalez, one of the top stars in Puerto Rico, shockingly announced he's leaving WWC and most expect him to jump to IWA. Gonzalez claimed WWC was late in paying him, which he says breached his contract (reportedly paying him $800-$1000 per week). As a result, his lawyers sent WWC a letter saying because of this, he was quitting the company. Gonzalez no-showed WWC events this weekend. This is going to badly hurt WWC's upcoming Anniversary show because Gonzalez was a major part of multiple top angles that the card was built around. Gonzalez has been the top heel in WWC and arguably has kept the company alive the past 5 years, and is most responsible for getting Carly Colon (Carlito) over as a big star. IWA has already started advertising a mystery wrestler to be the top heel in upcoming shows this weekend, and it's no secret that Gonzalez is expected to debut for the company and be that guy. Dave also mentions several other WWC wrestlers who no-showed events last week because they were late in being paid. Many of them are as much as 10 weeks behind on pay, but this week, they were summoned to the office where Carlos Colon paid them about 5 weeks worth of what they're owed. Lots of death-of-ECW vibes going on here lately.
  • Lots of rumors that AJPW star Genichiro Tenryu will be showing up at the NOAH show this week to challenge GHC champion Yoshinari Ogawa. Needless to say, this would be a big deal if it happens because AJPW and NOAH basically hate each other. No word on whether this is an angle or not, but given how much Motoko Baba hates NOAH, it seems unlikely. Of course, it also remains to be seen if Tenryu will even show up or if it's all just rumors. Tenryu is currently feuding with Muto over who should have become president of the company, so this could be just a kayfabed angle to make it look like Tenryu is really anti-AJPW (looks like it was just a work, he doesn't end up going to NOAH until 2005).
  • Dave recaps AJPW's latest Buddokan Hall show, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the company, which featured Keiji Muto wrestling 3 different matches under 3 different gimmicks. All told, Muto worked a total of about 36 minutes between the 3 matches and was banged up like hell the next day. There were also a lot of old legends on the card, like Abdullah The Butcher, Mil Mascaras, Dos Caras, and more. Stan Hansen and Motoko Baba came out to give speeches about the company, with Ms. Baba breaking down crying when talking about her husband, and more. I managed to find most of this show on Dailymotion, enjoy:

  • While we're on the topic, Dave saw a recent AJPW match with Tenryu defending the Triple Crown title against Satoshi Kojima in a match that many are calling the match of the year. Dave saw it and gives it 4.75 stars and calls Kojima possibly the best wrestler in the business when it comes to carrying the audience on an emotional roller coaster ride. He doesn't agree or disagree that it's the best match of the year, but he sure loved it.

  • Mitsuharu Misawa suffered a dislocated shoulder in a recent match. Popped it back in, worked the next day, still in pain, went to the hospital because that's what happens when you wrestle again right after dislocating your shoulder. Anyway, the doctors were like, "Hey, maybe don't do that for a minute" but he's Misawa so he vows he won't be missing any dates and then he hit the doctor with an emerald flowsion. Dave doesn't say this, I'm just assuming.
  • NJPW continues to decline. They held back-to-back shows at the 10,500-seat arena in Sapporo this week. The first night only drew 4,100 fans which was the smallest crowd they have drawn in that city in years. Second night was better, but still only 6,000 fans to see Yuji Nagata retain the IWGP title over Bas Rutten. In another era, this win would have been huge for Nagata but nobody cares when a wrestler beats an MMA guy in a worked match anymore because Inoki pretty much beat that horse to death.
  • There's talk of bringing back Chyna to work the August Tokyo Dome show for Antonio Inoki's UFO MMA promotion, presumably just to make an appearance (oh, if only). There's also talk of bringing her in for NJPW's September tour and having her beat male prelim wrestlers every night. Needless to say, there's a whole lot of people in the company against that idea. Especially because her loss to Joey Buttafuoco in a celebrity boxing match a few months ago actually got a lot of coverage in Japan, so coming off that and showing up to beat male NJPW wrestlers isn't a popular idea. But Inoki gonna Inoki, so we'll see.
  • Latest on the ECW bankruptcy proceedings. The trustee has filed a motion demanding that the InDemand PPV company pays them $724,456.40. That total is the money they owed ECW, minus $25,000 because ECW failed to produce the March 2001 PPV they were contractually obligated to produce. This case is a textbook example of why trying to run a PPV-only company like TNA is going to be so difficult. InDemand is still holding onto ECW PPV money from over a year ago. Anyway, of the $724k, a big chunk of it will go to attorneys, back taxes, commission fees, etc. Video game maker Acclaim, who owned a percentage of ECW, is expected to get a big chunk as well. Whatever is left over will be used to pay off existing creditors but there's not gonna be much. A lot of those creditors are just never going to get paid. It's also expected that Acclaim will end up owning the video tape library rights, since WWE hasn't yet made a bid to acquire it.
  • Former Crockett/WCW wrestler Chris Champion suffered a major stroke and is in critical condition. Champion also wrestled as Yoshi Kwan for a bit in WCW. A lot of people expected him to be a major star in the 90s, but it just never panned out, usually due to his own personal issues (I looked it up, he ended up surviving this go round, but he died in 2018 after suffering more strokes).
  • If you're wondering what Jim Crockett Jr. is up to these days, he works in real estate in Dallas. When Shaun Assael interviewed Crockett for his book on Vince McMahon, everyone in Crockett's office was shocked because they had no idea that their coworker was once the 2nd biggest wrestling promoter in the U.S. throughout most of the 80s. That's how much he's left the wrestling business behind.
  • Just gonna paste this quote here: "For whatever this is worth in case this becomes a major historical question down the line, the actual idea to make David Arquette WCW champion came from Tony Schiavone." Dave notes that Schiavone didn't have any decision-making power to make it happen, but he was the one who made the suggestion at a production meeting. According to those there, when Schiavone made the suggestion, Vince Russo's eyes lit up like it was the best idea he'd ever heard and the rest is history. (Vince Russo has confirmed this story himself. Last I heard, Tony admits he was involved in coming up with the idea but he refuses to take sole credit for it).
  • The Chicago-Sun Times interviewed Greg Gagne's son JP who is a pitcher for Notre Dame. In the interview, he talked about how famous wrestlers used to stay at his house all the time growing up and said that his friends love the story of how he once rode Space Mountain at Disney World with Ric Flair. Hehe.
  • Shane Douglas is now the booker for XPW and is involved in an angle where owner Rob Black's wife Lizzie Borden is leaving him for Douglas (don't get too close to her Shane, you might lose a thumb! More on that in a couple weeks...). Also, at the first show with Douglas as booker, there was a scaffold match where Douglas came out and shot the guy on the scaffold with a tranquilizer, causing him to plummet to the ring below, which then exploded. Don't worry, I wouldn't write all that without having a video for ya:
WATCH: Shane Douglas XPW tranquilizer gun scaffold spot
  • Notes from TNA PPV Week 5: Sabu debuted to face Malice in a surprise ladder match. It was fine. Sabu won, which earned him a contract to face Ken Shamrock for the NWA title next week in another ladder match. Don't worry, we have more ladders to come. Jeff Jarrett is being booked like the Stone Cold of TNA and Dave ain't here for it. Francine and Jasmine St. Claire had a shower scene together backstage, later leading to Jasmine in a wet t-shirt. K-Krush cut a promo complaining about being fired by WWE, just in case you weren't aware that most of this roster is full of WWE rejects, they make sure you know it. A 4-way match with a bunch of the young guys completely fell apart with everyone except Christopher Daniels looking totally lost and confused. Dave says rarely do matches even in OVW fall apart as badly as this one did. Another little person match that Dave says was one of the worst matches of the year and was highlighted by one of them breaking a watermelon over the other's head. Negative 3 stars. Even worse, the match went waaaay longer than it was supposed to, which cut into the time for AJ Styles vs. Low-Ki and a match that should have been great ended up being a huge disappointment. Plus a drunk guy in the crowd took away everyone's attention and they couldn't get the audience back. Jerry Lynn attacked AJ with a ladder afterwards because whooohoo ladders! Francine and Jasmine ripped each other's clothes off like every other time you've seen it in WWE. Then Blue Meanie DDT'd her and she did a stretcher job. Brian ChristopheLawlewhatever he is this week cut a long promo trashing his father to continue getting fans interested in a match they can't possibly deliver. Why not just challenge Austin or Rock while you're at it, Dave wonders. Fuck it, if you're gonna do dumb shit, at least go big. Scott Hall vs. Christopher in the main event was bad because Hall just returned from working IWA in Puerto Rico for several days and was pretty much on a drunken bender the whole time. And then Hall did a stretcher job to end the show, which was kinda lessened by Francine having done the same thing 30 minutes earlier. And there we go. After only 5 shows, this shit is already WCW 2000 all over again.
  • Despite all the publicity they got, TNA also barely made any mention of the angle last week with the Tennessee Titans football players. Apparently the players caught some shit from the Titans GM for it and since they aren't coming back and they can't do a match or anything with them, TNA decided to just forget it happened.
  • In case you're wondering why TNA hasn't made a play for Scott Steiner yet, apparently he and Jeff Jarrett had been friends for years, especially during the WCW days, but they recently had a falling out of some kind. Hence, TNA has no interest in using him.
  • The reason WWE is running back-to-back tapings for Raw and Smackdown next month in Seattle is to test the market. WWE did a site check last month at Safeco Field for next year's Wrestlemania, but there's question as to whether the Seattle market will be able to sell out a big stadium like that, so the decision was made to do this. If they have a double-sellout both nights, that'll pretty much guarantee that Seattle gets Wrestlemania. If the shows do poorly, they may reconsider and select a new city (I guess these shows end up doing okay).
  • The Rock is set to star in another major movie, this time a $100 million budget production based on the video game SpyHunter. The hope is to have the movie out around Christmas 2003, in order to cross-promote it with the new video game coming out around that time. This adds more to Rock's Hollywood plate and it's looking like he's going to be around wrestling even less next year (this movie ends up stuck in developmental hell for years and never gets made, but Rock ends up doing the voice for the video game in 2009 instead).
  • Dave isn't sure why yet, but the long-planned Hogan vs. Vince match at Summerslam is now off. Dave suspects they may be holding off until Wrestlemania, which is great if they have a long-term plan and now that they're doing the Bischoff vs. Stephanie storyline, Vince is planning to take himself off TV for a little while anyway. So we'll see. In the meantime, the whole mess last week with Triple H talking Vince out of getting slapped by John Cena because "nobody should be laying hands on Vince until the Hogan match" ended up being for nothing.
  • Notes from Smackdown: in talking about Stephanie McMahon trying to be a babyface, Dave says she's basically the wrong person for this gimmick but she's a McMahon, so what are ya gonna do? He also jokes that "when this thing goes down and I write the book, I think my title will be "Wrestling Promoters Should Be Banned From Having Children: Unless They Don't Allow Them To Work In Their Promotion." I dunno, seems wordy to me. They also did the bit with Stephanie as GM and all the wrestlers backstage watching on the monitors, leading Dave on a Cornette-style rant about how WWE can't even be bothered to separate heels and faces in different locker rooms and it takes you out of the show when they're all sitting around backstage together watching the TV and carrying on conversations. Sure, kayfabe is already dead, but can we at least try to create an illusion of it within the show itself? This was also the last Smackdown before the PPV and there was some discussion over the finish of the Rock vs. Angle match. Paul Heyman and Michael Hayes wanted Rock to lose clean to the ankle lock, since he was winning the title on Sunday anyway and Angle was doing the job. Pat Patterson and Triple H argued against it, saying Rock shouldn't be tapping to anyone, even though Angle's gimmick right now is that he can make everyone tap (even Hogan last month). So instead, we got the Undertaker run-in DQ finish and Dave says this kinda shit is why WWE is unable to create long-term storylines. There was also a bunch of bickering with Heyman, Triple H and Hayes over the finish of the Jericho/Cena match as well, which Jericho was apparently upset about.
  • In an online chat this week, Goldberg didn't rule out going to WWE but said he hasn't met with anyone in the company. He also said that if WWE had kept Vince Russo, then there's zero chance he would have gone. When asked about Japan, he only said he's considering all offers. Goldberg is said to have no interest in the WWE schedule and is content with the idea of working a few big shows a year in Japan. That's all well and good but Dave says the reality is that the biggest money opportunity for Goldberg is in WWE, where there's several dream matches that would do huge PPV business and earn him far more money than he can ever make in Japan. WWE also gives you the kind of celebrity exposure in America that can open up acting roles. But the problem is, giving Goldberg a reduced schedule could cause some issues in the locker room. Then again, Rock and Hogan are already working reduced schedules.
  • This week's episode of WWE Confidential was the best of the series yet, focusing on the Bischoff and McMahon relationship. It was weird to see these two, out of character, reminiscing about a time when they legitimately would have gladly killed each other. They even showed Bischoff's 1990 WWF audition tape.
  • Various WWF notes: Kevin Nash did an interview and said he has spoken to Steve Austin since the walkout and gave his opinion on why Austin left. "I think Steve was burned out. He's got a broken neck, bad knees and a bad back. I know what it feels like when I wake up every morning. And he's had a couple multi-million years. Maybe it just isn't worth it to him anymore." Bischoff did a radio interview and noted he's been in L.A. constantly pitching TV ideas and said there's no interest in wrestling anywhere in Hollywood right now. Vince and Linda McMahon have purchased a new vacation condo in Boca Raton, FL. It's an 8-bedroom 10,000 sqft. condo on the 7th and 8th floors of the Excelsior hotel. The double-unit condo recently appraised for 14 million.
  • DDP did an interview and admitted that the stalker angle was the most disappointing thing he's ever done in wrestling because he wanted so badly for it to work and it flopped. DDP also said that Steve Austin hasn't called him since he was forced to retire and admitted he was kind of hurt by it. He said he knows Austin is going through a lot right now, but they're friends and if Austin can't take the time to care about what's going on in his life, then he can't be bothered to waste time worrying about whatever Austin is going through either.

2020.08.12 00:45 timmmy8 The Last of Us Part II: A Look Back at the Major Leaks & Rumours

Here we go, what has undoubtedly been my most requested game to cover in this series, and boooooy is it a biggie. My personal most anticipated game of all time, the sequel to arguably last generation's "game of the generation", comes Naughty Dog's game that is as highly spoken about as much as it was anticipated, The Last of Us Part II. Releasing a whole seven years after the previous game and releasing just before we all embark on a new generation comes a game that has definitely made headlines, a lot of them undesirable. Putting aside these headlines, whether you agree with them or not, there is no denying the hype behind this game, and everyone clawing for information about the game from the moment the first entry ended with that perfect finale way back in 2013.
However, this series of posts is about the leaks, and boy was there a big one - unfortunately for Naughty Dog, probably the biggest video game leak ever, and that might ever happen. Fortunately for us, there were other interesting leaks, including slip ups on streams from developers, fake reveals in magazines, and a popular actor leaking that it just might be being worked on.
Now, with that out of the way, lets jump in.

May 17, 2013 - Sony Register Domains For Sequels

As reported by VG24/7, a month before The Last of Us releases it seems Sony have registered internet domains for possible sequels, hinting that the series may have a future. Obviously not a real major leak, but it is our first hint that a series may be being considered, rather than a one off.
Outcome? Confirmed.

May 4, 2014 - Naughty Dog Concept Artist Teases Reveal

Marek Okon, talented artist who had worked with Naughty Dog on The Last of Us promotional material, began working on artwork that seems to show fan favourite Ellie. Here is the work-in-progress of the artwork, and as reported by IGN we can see that he also captioned the work with;
Let me tease you something... Its coming... ;]
Moments after IGN published this article, Okon had this to say;
Lol. This is how you know you are teasing your stuff the right way. So before its gonna get blown out of proportions [SP] - its gonna be strictly personal image. Is it about TLOU2? Not really... Maybe... Its classified ;P But seriously its gonna be just a fan art ;]
The beautiful finished product is viewable here. So there we have it, Okon himself admitting that it is a piece of personal art and should not be taken as a tease for the second game.
Outcome? False.

December 21, 2014 - Lead Character Artist's LinkedIN Profile Drops Name

Thanks to a discovery from the always reliable NeoGAF highlights how lead character artist from The Last of Us had recently left Naughty Dog - and that the artist in question, Michael Knowland, did indeed have a game on his resume listed as "Unannounced AAA Game", before changing it to;
The Last of Us 2 - 1 month prototyping head sculpts
While he is not credited with working on the game according to Moby Games, it does seem strange that he would list it without having actually worked on it - going on to his profile now shows that he has since removed the game from his profile.
Additionally, it seems that the current lead character artist Frank Tzeng also worked on the game and updated his resume to reflect this around the same time, discovered in the same NeoGAF thread, stating;
Helping develop a unannounced AAA game title
Outcome? Plausible. I buy into two possible trains of thought - that he did work on The Last of Us Part II briefly, or he did work on Left Behind - the original game's add-on, which launched in 2014 (the year Knowland departed Naughty Dog).

June 25, 2015 - Nolan North Confirms Sequel Being Worked On

Everyone's favourite voice actor in gaming Nolan North has seemingly spilled the beans on what Naughty Dog has been up to while answering a question at Metrocon in 2015. He was hosting his own panel when a Q&A seemed to take place and a fan asked him if he was involved in any upcoming Naughty Dog projects to which he responded;
For now, last one, I know they're doing Last of Us 2 but my character in Last of Us kinda..kinda *death noise*
Of course Nolan would know what Naughty Dog are up to, so this seems like a genuine slip of the tongue.
Outcome? Confirmed

June 30, 2015 - Troy Baker Denies Working On Sequel

Shortly after everyone's favourite voice actor Nolan North has let slip that a sequel is being worked on, it seems that everyone's favourite voice actor Troy Baker has disputed as much. As reported by GameReactor, Baker denies the claim at Indy PopCon 2015 stating;
Okay, so I'm... And by the way I know nothing. I don't know if we're gonna do another one or not. If we do, then I trust Neil [Druckmann, creative director] and Bruce [Straley, game director] and everyone at Naughty Dog to tell a story that needs to be told.
Outcome? Liar, liar. Baker sums it up right here.

September 15, 2015 - Naughty Dog Let Slip Sequel In Development on Live Stream

As reported by GamePur, during a live stream for Naughty Dog's Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, held by employees Monacelli, Scherr and Baldwin, it appears one of them let slip a really big clue about there being a sequel game. While talking about animation, one of them is quoted saying the following;
and he was the one in charge of face animation for the 3 Uncharted games and the first The Last of Us game… did I just say the first The Last of Us game
The team just chalked it up to confusion, but it definitely seems to drop a massive hit that the much desired sequel is being worked on.
Outcome? Confirmed.

December 3, 2016 - The Last of Us Part II Announced

Watch the reveal trailer here!

September 28, 2018 - Did PlayStation Leak 2019 Release Window?

A thread on reddit seems to have noticed that a video from the PlayStation Music YouTube channel has seemingly listed The Last of Us Part II, followed by "2019". While at the time it was highly speculated, and assumed, that the sequel would be releasing in 2019, there was currently no official word from Naughty Dog or PlayStation that this was the plan. For those hwo want to view it themselves, here is a screenshot courtesy of u/BostonMIT.
Outcome? Likely.

February 28, 2019 - Peruvian Game Retailer Leaks 2019 Release Window

More fuel to add to the 2019-release-bonfire that is only getting larger and larger, with Peruvian retailer LawGamers seemingly releasing promotional material a little bit too early, as reported by The Loot Gaming. The promotional material is viewable right here, and advertises the game with an October 2019 release, supporting the previous two leaks.
Outcome? Confirmed.

September 24, 2019 - Release Date Announced As February 21, 2020

Watch the reveal trailer here. It does say June 19, 2020 at the end of the trailer but this was not the original upload, it seems they have edited it, here is an article from Variety confirming the February date.

October 24, 2019 - Delayed Until May 2020

The Last of Us Part II has been delayed until May 29, 2020 to make sure that the game is up to Naughty Dog standards.

April 2, 2020 - Delayed Indefinitely

With the global pandemic concerning COVID-19 sweeping the world, Naughty Dog has announced that The Last of Us Part II has been delayed indefinitely due to logistical reasons created by the pandemic.

April 3, 2020 - Gameplay Clips Leak Online

As reported by PlayStation Lifestyle, it seems that fans have tried to find comfort in the delay by seeing two new gameplay leaks for the game. While the gameplay leaks have obviously been taken down since then, but here is a description from the site Alt Char for the first gameplay leak,
It is a short, 30-second video that features Ellie and Dina riding their trusty steeds. Interestingly, Ellie talks about a certain film that she enjoyed in the good old days and to us, it sounds a lot like Spy Kids film. She mentions it has four parts and how Joel saw the last one in theatres
The gameplay description for the second leak comes back from PlayStation Lifestyle, and is as follows;
The clip starts with an in-game tag that reads “Seattle Day 3,” (similar to the tags found in the original game) then transitions to a scene of Ellie slowly waking up. Once dressed, Ellie begins looking for Dina and Jesse, the latter of whom Ellie speaks with early in the E3 2018 demo. Traversing through what appears to be a backstage area, she soon finds herself in the theater. From there, the character is able to move towards a guitar to practice.
Interestingly, it is not just a video that plays while she does this. The player will obviously have plenty of input, using the DualShock 4’s touchpad to strum the guitar, while also cycling between chords via button presses with L1 and R1. It seems a neat touch, a new mechanic that certainly carries weight for those who remember Joel’s promise to Ellie from the original The Last of Us.
Outcome? Confirmed.

April 4, 2020 - Reddit Comment Shares Spoilery Plot Details

It seems that a comment on a reddit post gained some traction after making some pretty bold claims.
Someone in the comments of the video said they saw a potentially true leak that says Joel AND Ellie both die. Joel is killed in the first few hours by Abby, the daughter of the surgeon you kill in Part One. This is apparently what happens in that scene in the trailer where Ellie's being held down. Ellie dies at the end of the story, but he wasn't told how. Jesse and Dina live. You play as Abby for half the game.
Well, as we know, this is mostly accurate. The reason this one spread like wildfire is that it claims both Ellie and Joel die, when in reality, we all know the truth. But the claim Abby and Joel is very accurate.
Outcome? Somewhat Reliable.

April 6, 2020 - Did The Whole Plot Get Posted On 4chan?

Very big thank you to reddit user u/dediusryan94 who managed to save the big possible leak on 4chan by screenshotting the whole post, and sharing it here on reddit. The whole leak is viewable in an album here, and is quite detailed.
For those who cannot view the image, or would rather read the text, here it is. I will also be adding comments about the accuracy of the leak where appropriate.
I am the immediate family member of someone working at Naughty Dog The Last of Us 2
As you know TLoU2 will be Ellie centered obviously. The stories main driving point is the romance that briefly kindled between Dina and Ellie. Not entirely accurate, the main point is revenge.
Ellie and Joel are distant because of Joel being controlling stemming from the decision in TLoU but are starting to try and mend their relationship. Accurate.
There is a love triangle of sorts, not exactly a triangle as its just two people who live Dina, being Jesse and Ellie. Accurate.
Jesse (asian guy from the trailers) and Dina were a couple. Dina is bisexual. Accurate.
When Jesse and Dina are on the outs of their relationship Dina starts to make advances on Ellie. Accurate.
Due to Dina being the girl every guy wants and having a history dating men (men being a central driving force in this story) Ellie is cautious and is unsure of how serious Dina is. Elements of Ellie's caution are seen at the start of the game.
However, after several flirtatious gestures Ellie begins to question if Dina really does loves Ellie, and Ellie ultimately begins to fall for her. Accurate.
Act 1 concludes with Dina and Ellie sharing an important intimate moment solidifying the relationship through act 1. Not 100% sure on the "acts" but definitely at the start of the game this is accurate.
That is until they are interrupted and attacked by a religious sect called the Seraphites (one of 2 groups we encounter, the other being the WLF). Not accurate, while Seraphites are in the game, they are not until later and Ellie encounters them alone.
Jackson is also attacked. False.
Dina is killed in this attack. False.
The Seraphites believe they are angels cleansing the wasteland. The old "the end of the world is cause of the sinners" trope. Accurate.
Anyone that is not a Seraphite is considered a "wolf" or "enemy to the flock (the Seraphites)". They also refer to themselves as "lambs". Inaccurate, only the WLF is referred to as "wolf".
In the vein of SJW baddies, the Seraphites dont like gays because its a sin. Not 100% sure this is accurate.
This is why all their members are *usually* white males with shaven heads of white women. And the few apostates (traitors) that leave the group tend to be minorities. Inaccurate.
Ellie vows to get revenge on the group. She does vow revenge, but not on the Seraphites.
Jesse joins her (that is Jesse in the trailer grabbing Ellies mouth, not Joel) as he also loved Dina. He is later killed as Ellie watches. Accurate. More on this later.
Ellie goes to her old house. False.
Then Joel joins her. Until he dies too. He does die, but not like this.
In the trailer you can see the Seraphites hanging people. This is because they use the old medieval method called "hanging and quatering". Accurate.
They only hang and disembowel former Seraphites. The disembowlment is for traitors or "Apostates". I believe they do this for anyone.
On the way to avenge Dina they have to cross through WLF territory. Accurate.
The leader of the WLF is Marlenes brother. Inaccurate or at least unconfirmed, the leader is Isaac played by Jeffrey Wright.
Joel dies and Ellie questions**Isnaccurate.**st for revenge was worth losing Joel who she recently mended her strained relationship with. False.
The Seraphites are all immune. False.
The cut on the cheek is a test for immunity. An infected knife. False.
Flashback happens. Yes, but for Ellie.
The mystery woman in the trailer is Ellies mom. False.
Ellies mom was looking for a cure. False.
She has a baby with a man that is immune. False.
The man is killed for sleeping with a "wolf" or outsider. False.
Marlene and Anna (Mystery woman) were friends. False.
Anna gives birth to Ellie then had Ellie taken away after being born to get her away from Marlene and the Seraphites. False.
Marlene (who is WLF) is then sent to retrieve Ellie and eventually finds her, using her friendship with Anna to win Ellies trust. False
Ellie ends up with Seraphite girlfriend who wont turn when they exchange fluids. False.
All in all, some accurate, some inaccurate. The most interesting one for me is actually the claim that the hand grabbing Ellie in the trailer is Jesse's hand, and not Joel's. In the trailer it is Joel, and content creators were actually able to play this segment of the game where they were also able to confirm that it was Joel. However, in the final game it is indeed Jesse has Joel had already died by this point of the game. This is the biggest part of the leak that lends credibility, but it also gets so many big things wrong for it to be considered a reliable leak.
Outcome? Unreliable. Gets some right, gets the big stuff wrong.

April 14, 2020 - Amazon Leaks New Release Date?

It seems that Amazon has made a whoopsie and leaked a June 26, 2020 release date. Not much more to it than this, although normally placeholder dates tend to be the last day of the month, so would in this case by June 30th, so there is some credibility to this leak.
Outcome? Inaccurate. This was never an announced release date.

April 27, 2020 - The Biggest Video Game Leak Of All Time

Here we go, probably the reason everyone clicked on this link, and why I have received dozens of messages asking when this post would be coming. It is in my opinion the biggest video game leak of all time, and there is so much to cover here it could be a whole article in itself.
The day that will go down in infamy for Neil Druckmann, and the entirety of everyone involved in the game, a leaker has managed to get their hands on over an hour of gameplay and cutscenes, sharing them online with the world. There are massive spoilers in the leak, covering big story elements that shock most fans.
The leak themselves? While I cannot share the video here, it is easy to google and find out what the major story beats seem to be for the game. This was the main source, the resetera thread covering it, but has since been edited. For those who want to see it before its changes, here is a screenshot of the of it, right here.
The main points of the leak seem to cover that;
Additionally, there was a large amount of gameplay leaking, including a short snippet of multiplayer footage which is currently being worked on as it would not be ready for launch.
So how did this leak?
One popular theory at the time was that the leak was the result of a disgruntled Naughty Dog employee who was upset over a pay dispute, and would make things right and not damage their career by leaking this. However, Sony managed to get in touch with Polygon and state that
SIE has identified the primary individuals responsible for the unauthorized release of TLOU2 assets. They are not affiliated with Naughty Dog or SIE. We are unable to comment further because the information is subject to an on-going investigation. We’re looking forward to when The Last of Us Part II will be in your hands and can’t wait for you to enjoy the full experience on June 19.
A few days later, journalist Jason Schreier shared on Twitter his version of the story, which seems to support both Naughty Dog's and Sony's claims;
OK: After talking to two people with direct knowledge of how TLOU2 leaked as well as some Naughty Dog employees, I have a good idea of what happened. Short version: hackers found a security vulnerability in a patch for an older ND game and used it to get access to ND’s servers.
I think the footage that leaked is from devs playing an early build (I haven’t watched it). Most importantly, rumors of this being an act of protest by a contractor whose pay was robbed are not true. (ND actually extended pay and healthcare benefits for contractors due to covid)
This idea is thoroughly explored and explained here in this Twitter thread from PixelButts.
Outcome? Confirmed. While there were also theories that the end of the game was the scene from the leaks where Abby confronts Ellie and Dina in the theatre, this wasn't the case and the actual ending had not leaked...yet, which was later confirmed by Druckmann. Further, this leak caused many to boycott the game due to the game's story and themes, with many disliking the direction that Naughty Dog was taking the series.

April 27, 2020 - Release Date Announced

I assume as an attempt to steal the headlines away from the leaks, the release date for The Last of Us Part II was announced for June 19, 2020 in an official blog post.

June 12, 2020 - The First Three Hours Leak Online

Just a week before the game's release, it seems that early copies have made their way out and the first three hours of the game managed to make their way online, as shared in this reddit thread. The leaks also provide context to a certain character's fate, and show the scene itself in the context of the story.
Outcome? Confirmed.

June 17, 2020 - The Ending Leaks

Just two days before the game is in everyone's hands, it seems that early copies have again let the ending make its way to the internet. The scenes in question are indeed the actual ending, showing the final confrontation in Santa Barbara where Ellie takes on Abby (and lets her live), and the ending at the farm.
Outcome? Confirmed.

Closing Thoughts

Wow, what a ride. Personally, this was my most anticipated game of all time, which is why this one didn't come as quick as some would have liked, I had to finish the game first. In my opinion, it is a great game, and once again my favourite game this generation - but I can understand how others may not feel that way due to the plot, the structure, the length, or even the characters.
There is no doubt in my opinion that this is the biggest leak of all time, in regards to games. The fact that such major plot elements and story elements had leaked for the sequel to last generations "game of the generation" is what makes it so shocking, and so fascinating. While other games have had the whole game leak, the fact that this is one the whole world had their eyes on, the nature of the leaks, and the contents of them, this personally takes the cake.
For those who did enjoy this post and want to read more of these look backs, feel free to check out my previous posts;
So what are your thoughts? Did the leaks impact your enjoyment of the game, or even impact your decision to buy the game in the first place? Where do you think the game will be headed in the future? What is next for Naughty Dog? Finally, what games do you want to see covered?
As always, thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I do researching it.

2020.06.25 04:46 The_Leo_1110 [SPOILERS] My honest review of The Last of Us II

TL;DR 7/10
MAJOR SPOILERS FOR: The Last of Us The Last of Us II MORE SPOILERS FOR: Avengers: Endgame Star Trek Beyond
I should begin by saying that I love The Last of Us. I got the game in 2015 for PS4, and it is, without a shadow of a doubt, my favorite video game of all time. The gameplay is fun and satisfying, the graphics are stunning, the music is very immersive, but the game’s narrative is the real focus. The entire game focuses on the character relationships between Joel and Ellie, and it’s executed so beautifully. Nothing feels forced, the dialogue feels (mostly) natural, and it’s overall an amazing experience, a definite ten out of ten.
I was so excited to see Ellie in 2016, all grown up, singing Through the Valley, and I could not wait for the next game. Then I waited, and waited, and waited. I heard a 2018 release, then 2019, then a date was given for February 2020, which was pushed back to the 19th of June, 2020. When I heard that the game’s ending had been leaked online, I completely shut myself off to everything to do with The Last of Us II, and I succeeded. No major plot details were spoiled for me, and I went in blind. By then, the overwhelming hype had worn a little, which is why I’m writing this review, because I’m not just sitting here as a fanboy, praising the game for every single detail, and ignoring the problems, because this game definitely has them – every game does.
I played the game on the day it released, June 19th. Because I work, I wasn't able to sit down and play it non-stop like I would have wanted to. I completed the game yesterday, June 23rd.
To start out with the obvious, this game is not its predecessor. The two are very different games with two very different narratives with two different tones. A story of survival, and a story of vengeance. This game is not better than the original, it is not as good as the original, and that’s to be expected. Only a handful of times in film and gaming has a sequel been better than the original, because expectations are often not met. The Last of Us set a very high bar for its sequel to reach, and that’s a damn near impossible task to accomplish. That, coupled with the game’s ending being leaked, people had a very specific mindset going into the game, and they weren’t happy with the outcome. I feel that I am in a more neutral area, not having been spoiled in advance.
The other obvious thing, which is only a minor factor in rating this game, is that on a technical level, The Last of Us II is leaps and bounds better than the original, but that’s given and expected. A PS3 game from 2013, compared to a brand new, 2020 release built for the PS4 Pro. The graphics are absolutely unbelievable in this game. At times, they don’t even look like graphics, they just look real. The details are spot on, and, according to people who actually live in Seattle, a lot of details in the game are accurate to their real life counterparts. Everything from the graphics, the lighting, the sound design, Gustavo Santaolalla’s amazing soundtrack, the animations, everything, this game looks and sounds real.
The gameplay is very similar to the first game, which some people enjoy, while others were hoping for something new. There were a few subtle differences in gameplay, like the addition of more craftable items, the ability to squeeze through tight spaces, etc. For the most part, though, everything is roughly the same, albeit some tweaking of stats. I like the fact that they didn’t try anything massively new, because what they had already worked very well. You know what they say, if it ain’t broke. One section I enjoyed in particular is towards the end of the game, when you enter The Rattlers’ hideout, and you can release Infected to attack the humans while you stealthily advance through.
The one thing I hoped there would be more of were infected stages. I hoped we would see a Stage 5 or Stage 6 infected. The only two new enemy types we got were The Shambler, which is a variation of the Bloater, and a boss enemy called The Rat King. The Shambler has basically taken the role of The Boater in terms of gameplay, acting as the heavy enemy type, and The Bloater is now a mini boss, appearing maybe five times throughout the entire game. The Rat King was the only gameplay detail I knew going in. I knew this massive infected boss enemy would show up, but the set up for it was done so well. Leaving the collapsed crane and entering the skyscraper with all of the infected, I kept hearing a noise, like a roar, and I thought this was it, but it never showed up. When I entered the lower levels of the hospital, the lights were all off, and I was terrified. I knew it was here, and I was waiting for the inevitable jumpscare, especially when I entered the parking garage, knowing this thing was in there with me. But there was no jumpscare, which I especially like, because jumpscares are not horror. It’s like if a comedian doing stand-up came out to the audience, tickled you, and claimed to be funny. That’s not funny. Something that by default triggers your fight or flight response is not scary. Knowing this thing was going to show up, but not when, was terrifying, and seeing this thing for the first time, because I didn’t know what it looked like, only that it existed, my reaction was similar to Abby’s. I just wish there were more new enemy types. More Bloaters to kill, or maybe an unstoppable infected enemy you have to escape from or use the environment to kill.
Now we delve into the meat and potatoes of this game: the story, and I have heard very mixed opinions on the story. Many of them negative. A lot of people claim that the game is forcing LGBTQ+ inclusivity. We’ve known that Ellie was gay for a while. In the Left Behind DLC pack from the first game, Ellie kisses Riley, and some more early footage showed Ellie and Dina kissing. I remember Ashley Johnson, who portrayed Ellie through performance capture, commenting on how difficult it was to be portray intimacy with all of the motion capture equipment she had to wear. I also know that, regardless of all of the fan theories floating around, that Abby is not a transgender woman. There exist women with masculine faces, small breasts, and arms the size of telephone poles. She was military trained, so having a muscular build makes sense.
There is a right and a wrong way to show inclusivity in film. I use film as the example because The Last of Us has a narrative comparable to most major films. One common example is Avenger’s Endgame. After Thanos orders Rain Fire and Captain Marvel destroys the ship, every female Avenger shows up at Spider-Man’s side, and there’s a brief scene of all of the female Avengers fighting. This scene felt very out of place compared to the rest of the movie, especially given the fact that of the main characters for the majority of the movie, around ninety percent of them are male. Take in comparison, Star Trek Beyond (2016). When the Enterprise crew arrive at the Yorktown starbase, a very brief scene is shown of Lt. Sulu meeting up with his husband and daughter. The entire scene doesn’t even last twenty seconds, and showing that one of the existing characters was gay, as opposed to creating a new, token gay character, is a much better way of being inclusive in storytelling.
Ellie is not gay just for the sake of it. In an interview about Ellie’s sexuality following Left Behind, Neil Druckman stated: “[W]e didn’t explore it [Ellie’s sexuality] one way or another in the main game, it was up for grabs in this story … when I was writing it I was writing it with the idea that Ellie is gay.” She’s been gay from the beginning, she’s just now able to express it more because she has someone to express it with. The first game had a very small cast of human characters, given the nature of the game, and none exactly work as love interests. Joel is a guardian, and in many ways a father figure, Tess dies, Bill is, well, Bill, Sam and Henry die, the two leave Jackson behind, and for the rest of the game, Ellie and Joel do not meet any allies. Everyone else tries to kill them, so no potential love interests. Now that Ellie has been settled in Jackson for four years, she’s had the chance to develop feelings for Dina, and Dina the same. Ellies’s sexual identity has been there since the beginning, we just never saw it until now.
This also applies to other characters. Having a much larger cast, The Last of Us II has more LGBTQ+ characters. Ellie and Dina were already mentioned, but Lev is a transgender male. This is a detail I did not notice at first, even in the test footage, showing Abby being hanged, and then being saved by Yara and Lev. Only after being told Lev was in trouble for shaving his head, and then hearing others call him Lily did I realize that Lev was transgender, before the game made more mention of it, as did many other players. The game, though, never outright says that Lev is transgender, that detail is left completely to be inferred by the player. The details of Lev coming out, not wanting to be Lily, not wanting to be a maiden, as told by the Seraphites, it feels like a trope, but it’s actually not uncommon for this to happen in real life, a society deeming you, as a woman, to a life as a maiden, with no choice in the matter. For the longest time, the United States was one of them. Never did it feel like inclusivity was being forced upon me. Never did I notice a token character.
Unlike the first game, The Last of Us II has a decent amount of filler material. Nothing in the first game felt like it was artificially lengthening the game. Everything had its purpose, nothing more, and nothing less. While technically the second game doesn’t truly have filler, most of Abby’s story is unnecessary, fluffing the total playtime anywhere between twenty and forty hours, and it comes off as filler. All we truly need to know about Abby is that her dad was the doctor Joel killed in Saint Mary’s Hospital, her and her crew are a part of the WLF, the WLF is at war with the Seraphites, and then the present day story involving Yara and Lev. Abby’s on again, off again with Owen, a backstory for every member of her crew, flashbacks in flashbacks, its unnecessary. This is, at its core, Ellie’s story for revenge against Abby, and while its good to humanize Abby, and try to justify her actions, the game goes too far in the humanization.
Then there’s Joel. Joel was killed off in the game’s prologue, beaten to a bloody pulp with a golf club. It’s brutal, fitting for the game, but arguably unnecessary. Killing off a lead at the beginning of the story can work, but I think it would have worked better if this were the third game in the series, not the second. Coming right out of a six year hiatus just to kill off the previous game’s lead character, it feels off. Ellie then goes the entire rest of the game trying to find Abby, and once she finally does, and she retreats to the farm house, she is plagued by PTSD for failing. Ellie has done some very bad things here, and this is shown no better than the scene with Nora. Nora is being infected with spores, and Ellie beats her to a pulp to get Abby’s location, but she returns to the theater shaking, covered in blood, and, in some ways, broken. Once, she gets to the farm, she can’t eat, can’t sleep, and this is looking to be a very good climax for the game. Tommy tells Ellie about Santa Barbara, and Ellie leaves to finish what she started. Months pass, she and Abby finally meet up again, and they finally fight again. The two are both badly injured, very weak, and fighting in knee deep water. Abby ends up biting off two of Ellie’s fingers, and Ellie has Abby held by the neck, nearly drowning her, but Ellie saw Joel again. Not him beaten to a bloody pulp, but the night before, sitting on his porch, playing guitar. Ellie lets Abby go, and lets her take Lev and leave. After that, Ellie goes back to the farm, Dina is gone, and Ellie walks off, roll credits. This entire final cutscene just feels … off. It feels like the game is siding with Abby almost.
From the start, Joel had been shown to be a very bad person. He has killed, tortured, maimed, and slaughtered a lot of people in those twenty years. He’s done some bad stuff with Tommy, which made Tommy leave the Fireflies. He was a smuggler, probably the bleakest thing he could be doing with his life, and he never even wanted to take Ellie. For him, he was just doing a job, getting paid, and then going home. He never expected to go all the way back to Tommy, and then all the way across the country to get to Salt Lake City. He tortured two Hunters to get a location for Ellie, and he slaughtered an entire hospital of people, a couple innocent, to save Ellie. The Last of Us puts us in the situation, thinking “It’s what I would do, too. Ellie’s is Joel’s daughter figure,” but that doesn’t make what Joel did right, and that’s the point. It’s wrong, but it was a gut feeling, that this was what needed to be done, and now Joel’s paying for it. First from facing heavy backlash from Ellie, and then from Abby. I do think that the game should have shown Ellie’s backlash much sooner, because her attempted resolution with Joel in the last cutscene feels rushed because only at the very end of Ellie’s story before Abby’s long interlude did we see when Ellie discovered the truth. Then, because of Abby’s interlude, we see nothing of Joel and Ellie until the last cutscene of the game, when Ellie tries to begin forgiving him. Then the next day Joel is dead and the game’s plot kicks off.
Most likely, the game is preparing for another sequel to Ellie and Abby’s stories, but it just feels unresolved. Dina is probably in Jackson, but is she really? She was at the farm for probably a couple months, with no intention of moving back home. Tommy said he and Maria were taking a break, so Tommy may well not be in Jackson. Jesse is dead, Ellie never had that close of a relationship with Maria, unless I missed something, which is very possible, which means Ellie now has nowhere in particular to go. She leaves behind her guitar, all of her records, and probably all the rest of her stuff besides her survival gear. All she has with her is her backpack. This is probably the point, but there’s no indication as to where Ellie is going. Abby is most likely going to the new Firefly base, but Ellie has nowhere. Her story is completely unresolved. She does not get her vengeance, and loses everything.
The ending left me emotionally drained. I didn’t know what to feel. I wasn’t sad, I wasn’t angry. I think the best word to use is disappointed. I was hoping for maybe something more. As all stories, it’s about problem and solution. Conflict and resolution. Tension and release, but the release never comes. The overall story is very good, but I feel it never goes anywhere.

2020.06.01 15:26 InitiatePenguin From Ferguson to Minneapolis, Little has Changed in 6 years. Police Brutality, Racial Prejudice of Law Enforcement and Lack of Reform from Militarization to Deescalation is still prevalent. Texas is Part of that History, and the World will be Watching when George Floyd is Laid to Rest in Houston.

Shooting of Dallas Police Officers

Lorne Ahrens, Michael Krol, Michael Smith, Brent Thompson, Patricio Zamarripa
Racial tensions could have been thought to have peaked when 5 Dallas cops were murdered during an ambush by a black man with indirect ties to New Black Panther Party. He would become the first person to ever be killed via a robot, armed with a bomb, by the police. But as a country still divided continues to grapple with the meaningless loss of another black life it shows that very little has been done to ease these wounds.

Tony Timpa

“You’re gonna kill me! You’re gonna kill me! You’re gonna kill me!”
Were the final words of Tony Timpa's life as he struggled to live while pinned down by Dallas cops in 2016. He called 911 asking for help with mental illness, instead of receiving aid, he was murdered.
He did not resist arrest, he did not fight back, he did not threaten the officers. He was already handcuffed before the police arrived on the scene.
As he died he was mocked by the police. The paramedics did not intervene. The other cops did not hold each other accountable.
4 months later a grand jury charged the officers with misdemeanor deadly conduct, but was thrown out by a judge a few months after that. The cops were eventually reinstated with little permanent repercussions.
Like in the case of George Floyd, controversial tactics were used by the Police. Like the method used in George Floyd's death - pinning someone's neck down with your knee - the "prone position" method of restraint used on Tony Timpa can lead to asphyxiation or sudden death. Unlike George Floyd, Tony Timpa was white.

Botham Jean

In 2018, another Dallas Police Officer wrongly entered the home of Botham Jean, an unarmed black man, mistook his home for her's and him as a burglar. She shot and killed him in his home.
Subsequently, and unanimously she was charged and indicted for Murder, over a year later the police officer was sentenced to prison for 10 years.
Some would call that justice if the key witness wasn't shot to death multiple times the night before.

Pecan Park Raid

Dennis Wayne Tuttle and Rhogena Ann Nicholas
In early 2019, the Houston Police Department performed a no-knock raid under false pretenses resulting in the murder of a husband and wife (and their dog) while enjoying a private evening.
Conflicting stories still exist about the altercation. HPD says one was armed while the other reached for another weapon. Other evidence says no guns owned by the couple were fired and no bullets were ever shot towards the door. The Husband was shot 9 times, and the Wife twice. They both died and several cops were injured.
A private investigation found evidence left behind at the scene and evidence that the police shot blindly through the walls. One Officer was charged with 2 counts of felony murder, another for providing false information. A third was later charged with lying on a 911 call. They would be later indicted for the same, with addition of tampering with government documents.
No sentence has been issued.

What is shown time and time again, that living while black, or by having the mere appearance that one exists on the margins of society - be it race, mental health, immigration status or the homeless - gives those in power the wrongly held belief that they can act with impunity.

Across the nation these past days there have been countless episodes of law enforcement instigating, escalating, and creating direct harm - even loss of life - to peaceful protesters. I have seen people be forcibly removed from their vehicles and tazed, while both hands stay firmly on the steering wheel until being dragged out. And while there has been criminal acts of vandalism, looting, assault and property damage from a whole array of characters from opportunists and even opposing instigators it does not erase the legitimate righteous anger that protesters have for racial injustice and police brutality in this country. And I'm not even going to begin with linking all the times I've seen white people behind the looting, vandalism. But here's a few. [49] [50] [51] [52] [53]
Props to El Paso [54], Santa Cruz. [55], and Okala, Florida [56]

George Floyd's Family will march in Houston from Discovery Green to City Hall alongside Black Lives Matters tomorrow. The world will be watching. This is not a partisan issue, even some conservatives are speaking out, and introducing legislation while the president seeks to sow more division and unrest.
We should see police departments across this nation remove these cops that do not serve and protect but rather escalate violence and bait protesters into riot. When people are not given equal enforcement under the law we don't have a just society.
Read MLK's Letter from Burmingham Jail, if you earnestly want to understand some of the plight of what these protesters are asking for.

Cineplex (TSX: $CGX)
Another great medium risk but high potential return stock. The stock has taken a beating because of Covid19 & movie theater closures.
Investors think Cineworld's C$34/share buyout offer will be cancelled, yet Reuter's reported, "Cineworld Says No Change In Co's Position On Cineplex Takeover Since March" on April 7. That's double your money at C$11.69 (at post) if it goes through.
Investors also think Cineplex will cancel their monthly $0.15 per share dividend in their next ER that they delayed until June 29, 2020.
Investors are discounting Cineplex's possible rise of online movie rentals to offset their onsite losses.
The odds don't get better than this but do your Due Diligence before investing.
The Motley Fool described Cineplex as having a "virtual monopoly" over the cinema market in Canada.

2019-present: Proposed acquisition by Cineworld
On December 16, 2019, Cineplex announced a definitive agreement to be acquired by the British cinema operator Cineworld Group, the second-largest film exhibitor worldwide, pending shareholder and regulatory approval. Cineworld would be paying $34 per-share—a 42% premium over Cineplex's share price prior to the announcement, valuing the company at CDN$2.8 billion. Cineworld planned to pay US$1.65 billion, and to fund the remainder by taking on debt.
The sale was approved by Cineplex shareholders in February 2020. Activist shareholder Bluebell Capital Partners called for the Canadian government to block the sale, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. which in turn led to the temporary closure(s) of all Cineplex movie theatres across Canada since March 16, 2020, and up until further notice.

Newzoo: Global esports will top $1 billion in 2020, with China as the top market (Feb 25, 2020):
Global esports revenues will surpass $1 billion in 2020 for the first time — without counting broadcasting platform revenues, according to market researcher Newzoo.
Globally, the total esports audience will grow to 495.0 million people in 2020, Newzoo said. Esports Enthusiasts (people who watch more than once a month) make up 222.9 million of this number.
In 2020, $822.4 million in revenues—or three-quarters of the total market—will come from media rights and sponsorship.
“As the esports market matures, new monetization methods will be implemented and improved upon,” said Remer Rietkerk, head of esports at Newzoo, in the report. “Likewise, the number of local events, leagues, and media rights deals will increase; therefore, we anticipate the average revenue per fan to grow to $5.27 by 2023.”
On September 13, 2018, Cineplex announced that it would acquire a stake in VRStudios—a Seattle-based provider of virtual reality installations, and utilize its equipment for as many as 40 VR centers across the country.
Playdium is a family entertainment centre chain owned by Cineplex Entertainment through its subsidiary Player One Amusement Group. The flagship location in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada launched as Sega City @ Playdium near Square One Shopping Centre on September 7, 1996. The 11 acres (480,000 sq ft) centre cost CA$17 million to build and included an arcade, batting cages, go-karts and mini-golf. A partnership with Sega GameWorks, it featured many arcade games from that company such as Daytona USA, and eight-player racing setups for Indy 500 (as Virtua Indy) and Manx TT Super Bike. Indy 500 remains available today. In 1999, the centre was renamed to Playdium. The company opened up two more locations in Brampton and Whitby in late 2019.

Cineplex has an Outtakes (French: Restoplex) restaurant in 94 theatres, some which replace previous restaurant partners (Burger King, KFC and New York Fries) and others which introduce restaurants at locations which did not previously feature one. VIP Cinemas and some Xscape locations feature a licensed lounge with more premium offerings compared to Outtakes. Poptopia is a flavoured popcorn restaurant offered in a full-service format at 22 locations. Other Cineplex theatres may feature Poptopia at the concession stand, but only in the caramel corn and/or kettle corn flavours.
Ice cream at Cineplex locations debuted with Baskin-Robbins and TCBY. Beginning in December 2007, Yogen Früz became the preferred partner. On January 1, 2014, Cineplex acquired a 50% stake in Yoyo's Yogurt Café. Hot beverages include Starbucks as the incumbent provider with 105 locations, all which offer Pike Place Roast coffee (regular or decaf) and Tazo tea. Select locations also offer premium drinks such as caffè mocha or caramel macchiato. Tim Hortons is available as a full-service restaurant in five locations,[75] with Brossard being the only location to offer both Tim Hortons and Starbucks.
In most theatres, Cineplex offers sale of alcohol to 19+ guests in Ontario (18+ in Alberta) similar to the VIP theatres albeit from a selection of beer or cider beverages.
If Aurora Cannabis (ACB) & Cineplex (CGX) partnered up to offer CBD & THC infused Cannabis 2.0 edibles in movie theaters, especially the IMAX & 3D ones, it should do very well. Canadian Cannabis Industry stocks should also do well as I posted earlier Cannabis Stocks Opportunity.

Cineworld to buy Canada's largest movie theatre chain in $2.8B deal (Dec 16, 2019):
Cineplex’s stock had been trading close to the Cineworld offer price of C$34 per share through early 2020, but has since plunged 40% following the virus outbreak.
Cineplex could lose a potential lifeline if its outstanding debt exceeds more than $725 million. As of December 31, 2019, the debt level was $625 million. The debt might balloon past the threshold with a further lockdown extension.

With no major movie release until mid-July, theaters could play “library” movies, which are movies that have already previously been released in cinemas, for several weeks.
If social distancing restrictions are still in place the company said it would either sell every other reserved seat in the theater or suspend reservations and just sell 50% of the tickets per theater.
“Even at peak periods of time in a normal environment, our occupancy levels range from 20% to 30% and we can operate profitably during those scenarios...” - CEO Mark Zoradi
He added that Cinemark has seen attendance as low as 10% and still was able to turn a profit.
North Vancouver's Park & Tilford Cineplex permanently closed (May 20, 2020)
The company closed all 165 theatres across Canada in March due to COVID-19, but the 1,382-seat Brookesbank Avenue location won’t be among those reopening, Cineplex has confirmed.
With Cineplex closing its Lower Lonsdale theatre in 2019, it leaves Park Royal as the only place to catch a big screen flick on the North Shore.
“We thank the community for their patronage over the years, and look forward to welcoming them at neighbouring Cineplex Cinemas Park Royal and VIP,” said Sarah Van Lange, executive director of communications. “I’ll note that our intent is to repurpose the Park & Tilford theatre space, which we’ll have more details on at a later date.”

Why Amazon’s Rumored Buyout of AMC Entertainment Makes Sense (May 12, 2020):
If Amazon can buy AMC, they can most certainly by CGX & dominate & control most of North America's movie theaters. Amazon would then control Hollywood! Why stop there, they should buy Cineworld too.
AMC Entertainment Surges 56% on Report of Talks With Amazon (May 11, 2020):
Alert: Cineplex (TSX:CGX) Could Be Acquired by This Incredibly Unlikely Source (May 12, 2020):
Despite Cineworld maintaining its commitment to buy Cineplex, the market has a different opinion. Remember, Cineplex agreed to be acquired at $34 per share. As I type this, the stock trades at $14.44. There’s no way the spread would be that wide, unless investors were writing off the acquisition completely.
Fortunately for beleaguered Cineplex shareholders, a new suitor could very well come along — one virtually nobody sees coming.
Although I think there’s potential for a private equity group or some other deep-pocketed investor taking a run at Cineplex’s cheap assets, there’s a much more interesting suitor on the horizon.
That acquirer is (NASDAQ: AMZN).
AMC says it will no longer play Universal Studios films (Apr 28, 2020):
“AMC believes that with this proposed action to go to the home and theaters simultaneously, Universal is breaking the business model and dealings between our two companies,” AMC Chief Executive Officer Adam Aron said in a letter addressed to Universal Studios Chairman Donna Langley.
Universal added that the company looked forward to having “additional private conversations” with AMC but was “disappointed by this seemingly coordinated attempt ... to confuse our position and our actions.”
Cineworld joins AMC in banning films from Universal Studios (April 29, 2020):
Cineworld, the world’s second largest cinema chain, has followed its rival AMC in banning Universal Studios films from its cinemas when they reopen, after the Hollywood film-maker released Trolls On Tour direct to streaming platforms.
“There is a certain system of windows which are a custom in the market and this sets the time difference between the theatrical market and other ancillary markets, among them streaming. Any movie that will not respect this window will not be shown in Cineworld group,” Mooky Greidinger, Cineworld’s chief executive, said on Wednesday.
Odeon bans all Universal Pictures films as studio skips cinema releases (Apr 29, 2020):

I'm sick of the congested internet & buffering of online movies & services during Covid19. They need to upgrade the internet infrastructure to 5G & Fiber Optics before it can really grow in my opinion -- especially buffering 4K & 8K movies & future tech that will only require more bandwidth going forward.
Younger people are not afraid of Covid19 like the older crowd. When theaters open, they will rush in to see their favourite movies.
Betting that people won't want to go to movie theaters when they re-open, is like betting the same against live sporting events or music concerts.
No home movie theater can match a real movie theater, even the smaller discount ones, unless you're Bill Gates or Jeff Bezos etc.
With Cineplex's Canadian Monopoly & diversification into other entertainment arenas like eSports & Virtual Reality, as long as they don't go bankrupt & social distancing restrictions are loosened, the stock should increase 2 to 3 times by end of 2021 in my opinion -- especially if the Cineworld Buyout goes as planned or another company like Amazon buys them out for a strong presence & control in Canada.
If a Coronavirus Vaccine is discovered sooner than later, then this stock will rebound accordingly & rapidly -- especially if they don't cancel or even if they do, resume Dividend payments in the future. At current prices, Dividend yield is about 13% per year.
Social distance cinema: drive-in theatres boom – in pictures (May 5, 2020):
We are all social creatures & want to go to movie theater as a social activity, to see & be seen; otherwise, why would Drive In Movie theaters boom during Covid19?
If no one goes out to be seen anymore, then all the Vanity Goods & Services will go under too & we will all dress in sweat pants & T-Shirt -- no need for designer suits & dresses working & staying at home. LOL ;p
Internet Bandwidth Requirements:
Online streaming remains the biggest source of 4K content, led by Netflix and Amazon’s growing selection of original series. But many consumer broadband connections aren’t fast enough to allow reliable 4K streaming.
Home Theater Movie Resolutions:
  • 4K (UHD): 3,840 x 2,160 pixels
  • 1080p (Full HD): 1,920 x 1,080 pixels
  • 720p (HD): 1,280 x 720 pixels
  • 480p (SD): 640 x 480 pixels
  • 8K: 7,680 x 4,320 pixels
For comparison purposes, 70mm film - still considered by many to be the gold standard - is roughly equivalent to a 12K resolution in digital terms, so digital's still got some catching up to do on that score.

There’s always been something metatextual about the music of Car Seat Headrest. 2018’s Twin Fantasy was an autobiographical record about a doomed love affair, but it was also about the act of making art out of a story from your own life—like, say, a story about a doomed love affair—and what happens to both the art and the autobiography when you do that. On 2016’s Teens of Denial, frontman Will Toledo would periodically break the fourth wall to address the proceedings, or use bits from other pop songs to comment on his own work. But even by those standards the group’s latest album, Making a Door Less Open, is built on a pretty heady concept: The album is the result of ideas from Toledo and Andrew Katz’s electro side project 1 Trait Danger “bleeding over” into Car Seat Headrest itself, informing both the way the music sounds and the perspective from which they’re written. In the songs, Toledo plays a character called Trait, who wears a gas mask. (That part was in motion long before our current nightmare hellscape, and Toledo has taken pains to point out that no matter how often fact and fiction blurs in his music, these two details are unrelated.) “Having a different character became to me the focal point that the record could be built around,” Toledo says. ”That developed out of a variety of different things—out of 1 Trait Danger, out of some of the themes on this record about struggling with identity—there’s this idea of becoming someone else, or being seen as someone else. Everything just seemed to tie back into the idea of an alter ego—which people have done before. I just liked the idea of using a mask.” Car Seat Headrest Making a Door Less Open Car Seat Headrest
Toldeo offsets these weighty ideas with the group’s most direct songs to date, shearing away his fondness for 7-plus-minute multi-part epics and—a few diversions into experimentalism aside (see: “Hymn”)—keeping everything streamlined. A very wise man once said, “Don’t bore us, get to the chorus,” and Toledo seems to have taken that advice to heart. “Martin” is one of the most open-hearted songs he’s ever written, its big, beaming vocal melody soaring high over its rickety-assemblage percussion. On “Life Worth Missing,” white-hot synths streak up the sides of the song like fireworks, as Toledo’s steers it into a chorus worthy of Ray Davies. And “Hollywood,” with its serrated guitar hook and bug-eyed, hollered-out vocals feels like a dead-on approximation of early Beck. (That its chorus, “Hollywood makes me wanna puke,” echoes “MTV Makes Me Wanna Smoke Crack” doesn’t hurt.)
That overt hookiness stems from the fact that Toledo read Bob Stanley’s paen to pop music Yeah Yeah Yeah just before he started working on the record. “I was interested in the idea that pop music just has, like, one basic unit, and that’s the whole song,” Toledo says. “Early rock & roll—it really just has the one hook that repeats and repeats. So I was interested in looking at how these sorts of songs carry energy through a couple minutes worth of time. Yeah Yeah Yeah was really helpful, because it had a lot of different examples where musically, everything’s just really simple—it’s just a couple of ideas. But in the performance, and in the way it’s arranged, you have variation. You can make it feel like a real solid run of energy, where it doesn’t lag. And so I just wanted to really condense stuff—get every line solid, every musical piece, just make each little component its own world, instead of lingering on any one [section] for too long.”
1 Trait Danger Seattle, Washington When it came time to select albums for this Big Ups, Toledo gravitated toward albums that, in some way, mirrored Making A Door Less Open—either in their use of alternate personas, or their focus on pop craftsmanship, even if the songs only last for a few seconds. “The way I usually use Bandcamp is that I go to the main page, scroll to the Discover section, and hit ‘New Arrivals.’ Then I’ll try to listen to selections from 20 different albums, or however many it takes before I find something interesting. I’m looking for someone who’s not gonna come up on my radar any other way.”
Here are just a few albums that have come across Toledo’s radar.
I’ve Made Too Much Pasta Swear I Saw Your Mouth Move Matawan, New Jersey 1 Trait Danger played at Anthro New England, and so did this band, and I fell in love with it. Live, there was a punk energy to it. He plays in [his raccoon] suit, and he has fingers cut out, so that he can still play guitar. It was really impressive—it’s kind of what we were going for with 1 Trait Danger—he’s definitely doing something that I want to be doing. Afterward, he introduced himself and said he really liked the 1 Trait stuff, and we kept in touch. We connected on a lot of levels, and the cartoon reality that he’s conjuring up in his songs always plays off of real-life situations. That’s something that I like to play with in both 1 Trait Danger and Car Seat Headrest, the idea that there’s humor, but the songs aren’t just for laughing about—there’s something else going on. And it’s not just hidden or sarcastic, it’s all going on on the surface. To me, that’s interesting art and interesting music, and it makes me want to dig deeper into what is actually being said. He’s really good at having lines in his songs that are totally absurd, then following them up with something that really hits home.
kendall :3 hey I just think this is a really good pop record. Like the last one, this is another record that comes out of the furry community. I’ve been on the sidelines of the furry community for about 10 years—that was where I started off sharing my music. I had a Bandcamp, and then I also had a Furaffinity page, and that was where I started getting some attention. But I also made friends there, and sort of grew in a smaller arts scene for a while. At that time, it felt like there were basically no musicians at all in the community. But gradually it grew and now there are a lot of musicians in this community, and all different genres. This came out in 2018, and it was one of my favorite records—to me, it does pop music better than most or all of the records that I heard that were doing a similar thing. It’s just sonically really rich and varied—and there’s also a lot of emotion in it.
Great Waves Heartfelt So I found this record because this artist has another account—I think it’s called Bernie Beats—and it only had one song on it, this glitched-out remix. So I bought it, but I was kind of bummed that there wasn’t more. Then they emailed me and said, ‘Hey, that’s just a side account, here’s my main account,’ and I thought, ‘Oh cool, there’s a bunch of stuff I can dive into.’ This record has really cool production—I really value someone just doing it themselves and getting sounds that may not sound the ‘studio correct’ way, but are also something that’s more interesting. The songs on this record and on his other records all have this really interesting combination of pop and techno, but with rock song structures. Working on that level as an independent artist, you can do exactly what you want, as long as you have the basic know how.
haunted reverie Indianapolis, Indiana seven sorrows of dolours haunted reverie I think I probably found this group in 2017. Their songs are just these acoustic fragments, they release super short albums, one after another. [This album is 19 songs in 19 minutes -ed.] I really liked that model of doing things, where you just capture the moment. That goes with what I was talking about with pop music—it’s not so much putting different things together, it’s seizing this one single moment. Records like this really boil that concept down into something that—it’s hard to call this ‘pop music’ because it’s so simple, but it interests me as what feels like a very pure, unadorned expression. Each fragment of this is exactly what was going on in their mind at the time they made it.
Gorgy Murgy Orange Siren Songs
꼬리물기/GoryMurgy This one I heard about through a friend. This band is from South Korea, and they’re one of my favorite indie acts of the moment, because they really capture that sort of fun, irreverent rock energy that, for whatever reason, doesn’t seem like a super popular model right now. Sometimes their songs will be based around these fragments of English lyrics, and I think that’s the way to do it—don’t think about it too much, just build the songs up around the hooks. The production on this EP is really good, too. You can tell that they spent time on it. It’s lo-fi, but it’s not just thrown together, and that reminds me a lot of what I was doing early on. I think they’ve covered [the Car Seat Headrest song] “Bodies” a few times live, and after I saw those videos, I tried to restructure what we were doing with “Bodies” to try to match their energy.
Kai Whiston No World As Good As Mine I picked this because it takes elements of electronic and dance music, and puts them into something that functions as a whole record. It just becomes this really interesting instrumental record, and it’s one of the best produced records I’ve heard in a while because it’s using all these tricks and stylings of EDM music, where everything has to be really clean, and incorporating it into these weirder structures. Elements keep coming in and out, and you just get a really rich sonic landscape. He works with Iglooghost—GLOO is the name of that collective, and I think all the members are relatively young. All you need is a couple of talented people to bounce off each other, and everybody’s juices get flowing, and you can build your own little world either together, or in opposition to one another.
Alan Licht Plays Well I just really, really love the song “The Old Victrola.” It was a song I first heard a while ago, and it’s very experimental—a lot of it is just this looping sample, this neverending vocal held note, while all of this feedback is going on underneath it. It really captures something that you couldn’t capture any other way, somehow. I think this is a live recording, and playing with it in that context, where you’re doing something live over this repeating work, it just has this incredible energy. I was having a bit of an anxiety attack the other day, and listening to this track was the only thing that was helping me calm down. It’s somehow sort of breaking pop music down into something that’s just there underneath, but it’s a thousand times more raw and more vulnerable than it was before. It really becomes beautiful just listening to it play out. j e keyes

2020.03.31 15:25 bigballsbuchanan Ghost Adventures Episodes in Chronological Order

Unfortunately there's no 100% agreed list of GA seasons and there never was one. Various platforms and Travel Channel affiliates provide contradictory episode listings. It was discussed numerous times over the years, recently we had yet another discussion on the matter. Somebody asked me on PM if I can share with them the chronological listing I've been using, so I've decided to post it here as well. Keep in mind this is not an "official" list, but it's a recommended one if you want to binge watch the whole show from beginning to end or if you're a new fan looking for specific episodes.
This is a list of Ghost Adventures episodes in order based on the original air date. I've been keeping it since I began watching the show during the first season and it mostly overlaps with the wikipedia listing, and a few other season lists. It includes every single episode, including all specials and compilation episodes. "Extra Pulses" are not added since there is no additional content compared to the original episodes. For the first 7 or so seasons this is how The Travel Channel listed their seasons before they nuked their site and started grouping them by production date and not air date. A few things of note:

2020.03.29 10:55 nashvilleh0tchicken How good was the 2015 NFL Draft after all?

It's common knowledge that it takes around 5 years to gauge how good a draft class is. 2015 was obviously a draft headlined by the two Heisman winning QBs on the top of the draft, though both of them flamed out in weird fashion by the end of their 5 year deals. I reckon now is officially a good time to gauge how good the class was, especially with free agency coming through around now and much of the first round getting their second deals. So, what do we think nfl? Included a summary of their career to date, plus their most recent contract, just to depict what they've done to date.
Pick 1, James Winston (Bucs) - Not signed, doubt he starts next season, wildly inconsistent for TB. Led league in passing once, didn't make the playoffs. 1 Pro Bowl.
Pick 2, Marcus Mariota (Titans) - Backup role, maybe gets a chance to start again. Did win an epic playoff game tho. Signed a $17.6m deal.
Pick 3, Dante Fowler (Jags) - did fuck all for the team that drafted him, broke out a bit for the team that traded for him, now signed a $48m deal.
Pick 4, Amari Cooper (Raiders) - Wildly inconsistent with Oakland, but helped turned Dallas' offense around once he went there and signed a monster $100m deal. 4 Pro Bowls.
Pick 5, Brandon Scherff (Skins) - Oone of the league's premier guards. Currently on the franchise tag. 3 Pro Bowls
Pick 6, Leonard Williams (Jets) - Pretty good against the run, not as good rushing the passer, bit inconsistent for the team that took him, currently on the tag for team 2. 1 Pro Bowl
Pick 7, Kevin White (Bears) - 285 yards from 25 catches in 4 years. Released in the 2019 offseason by Arizona. Next stop: XFL.
Pick 8, Vic Beasley (Falcons) - led the league in sacks once, didn't do much else and fell mightily following an awesome 2016. On a one year, $9.5m prove-it deal with Tennessee. 1 Pro Bowl, 1 First-team All Pro.
Pick 9, Ereck Flowers (Giants) - Flamed out as a bust tackle in New York, did nothing in Jacksonville, but impressed a bit as a guard for Washington. Signed a 3 year, $30m deal with Miami.
Pick 10, Todd Gurley (Rams) - Incredible to start, as 2015 OROY and 2017 OPOY winner. Became the league's highest paid RB then got arthritis in the knees, now his career's on the rocks. Signed a one year, $5m deal with Atlanta. 3 Pro Bowls, 2 First Team All Pros, 1 Second Team All Pro
Pick 11, Trae Waynes (Vikings) - Inconsistent in his time at the Vikings, but improved bit by bit each season. Signed a big $42m deal with Cincy to try and cement himself as an above average outside CB.
Pick 12, Danny Shelton (Browns) - Brownsed out of Cleveland, turned into a reasonable role player in New England who gets after the rush well. Signed a two year, $8m deal with Detroit.
Pick 13, Andrus Peat (Saints) - A solid lineman who started off inconsistently but improved to become a Pro Bowler with a $50m deal by 2019. 2 Pro Bowls
Pick 14, Devante Parker (Dolphins) - Started off terribly, nearly released after 2018 with an average below 600 yards a season. Then exploded with 1202 yards and 9 TDs in 2019. May become a true focal point of the offense with whoever the Dolphins draft.
Pick 15, Melvin Gordon (Chargers) - Explosive when he played, but marred by injuries and his 2019 holdout that may put somewhat of a blight on his career. Now signed with Denver on a two year, $16m deal to try and spite Spanos and the Chargers. 2 Pro Bowls
Pick 16, Kevin Johnson (Texans) - Injured often as a Texan, was a disappointment as the draft's second highest picked CB. Signed with Buffalo in 2019 to pick up his play, signed a $3.5m deal with Cleveland to prove himself.
Pick 17, Arik Armstead (Niners) - Solid role player until 2019, when he turned into a crucial piece on a team that made a run from #2 pick to the Super Bowl. So good he pushed DeFo Buckner out, and got a mammoth $85m deal in the offseason.
Pick 18, Marcus Peters (Chiefs) - DROY with Kansas City who led the NFL in picks, but often inconsistent. Traded to the Rams, where he stayed inconsistent, but became a star in Baltimore and a First-Team All Pro CB in 2019. Currently on a $42m deal with Baltimore. 3 Pro Bowls, 2 First Team All Pros, 2 Second Team All Pros
Pick 19, Cam Erving (Browns) - Brownsed out with the Browns, but was traded to Kansas City and became a serviceable interior lineman who now has a Super Bowl ring. Currently an unsigned free agent.
Pick 20, Nelson Agholor (Eagles) - Poor start to his career in Philly, improved mightily during the Eagles' 2017 Super Bowl winning season, but regressed after that and is known for his drops. Signed a one year, $1m deal with Las Vegas for 2020.
Pick 21, Cedric Ogbuehi (Bengals) - Busted out heavily with Cincy, becoming one of the NFL's worst tackles. Was depth for Jacksonville in 2019, signed a veteran's minimum contract with Seattle for 2020. Clinging onto a roster spot.
Pick 22, Bud Dupree (Steelers) - Another inconsistent edge rusher who was up-and-down through his first four years, but burst onto the national scene with 11.5 sacks in 2019. Currently on the franchise tag.
Pick 23, Shane Ray (Broncos) - 8.0 sacks in 2016 was the peak of Ray's career, as injuries and the addition of Bradley Chubb pushed him out of the fold in Denver. Released during final roster cuts by Baltimore in 2019, his next stop is probably the XFL; does have a Super Bowl ring though.
Pick 24, DJ Humphries (Cardinals) - An athletic tackle who finally moulded into a solid player by 2019. Currently on a 3 year, $45m deal to protect Kyler Murray.
Pick 25, Shaq Thompson (Panthers) - A solid linebacker who has improved year by year in Carolina. Signed a 4 year, $54m deal in the midst of the 2019 campaign.
Pick 26, Breshad Perriman (Ravens) - Journeyman receiver who bounced around injury lists up until an incredible burst in the last 6 weeks of the season in 2019, in a season where he recorded 645 yards for TB. Signed a one year, $8m deal with the Jets for 2020.
Pick 27, Byron Jones (Cowboys) - One of the league's top corners, a near-lockdown All Pro who signed a 5 year, $75m deal with Miami in the 2020 offseason. 1 Pro Bowl, 1 Second Team All Pro
Pick 28, Laken Tomlinson (Lions) - Not a full time starter in Detroit, traded to San Fran in 2017 where he became a serviceable starter. Currently on an $18m deal.
Pick 29, Phillip Dorsett (Colts) - Was a bust for Indy, traded to New England in 2017 for Jacoby Brissett where he became a serviceable role player at receiver. Has a Super Bowl ring, signed a one year deal with Seattle this offseason.
Pick 30, Damarious Randall (Packers) - Inconsistent tenure over three years with Green Bay, turned into a serviceable starting safety with Cleveland. Currently unsigned.
Pick 31, Stephone Anthony (Saints) - Fell off the map following his rookie season, has played with 5 teams in 5 seasons (including 3 in 2019). Probably won't play much meaningful football ever again.
Pick 32, Malcom Brown (Patriots) - Serviceable role player on the D-Line who won two rings with New England, before going to New Orleans on a 3 year, $15m deal to do exactly what he did in New England.

2020.02.13 05:02 eulenauge Trump is just the enforcer

A column by Henrik Müller
The current protectionism has a long history: figures like Donald Trump and Xi Jinping merely bring to an end what has been fermenting for a long time - and started with left-wing opponents of globalisation in the nineties.
Sometimes global political changes are immediately apparent. The outbreak and end of the Second World War in Europe, the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 - wars, conflicts and revolutions give the impression of a historical turning point at the very moment they occur. It is these major events that ultimately fill the history books, with all the accompanying documents and images, heroes and losers, great speeches and superhuman tragedies.
Many developments, on the other hand, do not unload themselves in sudden political quakes. They take place in slow seismic shifts: In the short term they are below the threshold of perception - in the long term they change the face of the globe, similar to the drift of the continental plates.
Thus the decline of the liberal world order, which is now unmistakably defining the present, also has a prehistory: over the course of many years, accents and priorities have gradually shifted, certain topics and perspectives have disappeared from public perception. Figures such as Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, seen in this light, today merely bring to an end what has long been fermenting.
Twenty-five years ago, a new era was supposed to have begun: that of multilateralism - a truly global world trade system. A new institution was to bring the strength of law to bear - and limit the rights of the strongest. Above all, this new economic order should be open to all countries that were willing to abide by its rules.
At the beginning of 1995, the World Trade Organization (WTO) began its work. In a recently published empirical study, which our Dortmund research center DoCMA has conducted on behalf of the Bertelsmann Foundation, we trace the WTO's history to date in the light of reporting by German and US media. The results, which have coagulated into long series of figures, show the story of a great disappointment: the idea of multilateralism is dying, and has been for many years. How could it come to this?
The spirit of the early years
Today it is almost impossible to feel the spirit of the early nineties. The Iron Curtain had just been lifted. Around the globe, an era of openness began: India, Latin America and South Africa set about stripping away the crippling protectionism of earlier decades. The former socialist countries of Eastern Europe were seeking to catch up with the global economy.
Western Europe and North America were already a few steps ahead: the EU abolished its internal borders by opening up its internal market. The USA, Canada and Mexico negotiated the creation of the Common Economic Zone of NAFTA (today: USMCA).
It was in the spirit of this optimistic liberalism that the talks on the creation of the WTO took place. And indeed, after its creation, it initially seemed that things would continue in the same way. The most important event in the history of the WTO followed a few years after its foundation: the accession of China, driven mainly by the USA. In November 1999, US President Bill Clinton and China's President Jiang Zemin signed an agreement paving the way for China's entry into the WTO.
At the time, there was a widespread expectation in the media that the economic opening would also promote a political and social opening, not only in China, but also elsewhere. An optimistic narrative which, as our data show, had its peak at the turn of the millennium. China finally joined the WTO at the end of 2001. This was an event that gave rise to great hopes for the triumph of the liberal order, with the United States as the guarantor of that order.
The WTO, that was the hope at the time, would finally put an end to the protectionism of the post-war decades and promote further liberalisation. What is more, the intensification of international trade was seen as a means of integrating the emerging, developing and transition countries - especially China - into the liberal international order that had been shaped by the West.
But then things went downhill, on and on.
Megapowers set the scene
A turning point in the history of the WTO already marked the failure of the Doha trade round in the 1990s. Thereafter, the EU and the USA in particular sought to open up markets further by concluding bilateral agreements with other states; a competition arose between the USA and the EU for the creation of free trade areas with other states. Finally, in the decade, China joined as another competitor; the Belt and Road Initiative (New Silk Road) can be seen as Beijing's attempt to establish its own sinocentric economic area.
Gradually, the WTO disappeared from public perception. The failure of the ministerial conferences in Cancún at the end of 2003 and Hong Kong at the end of 2005 made headlines once again. But after that things became quiet. Negotiations within the WTO framework, which in the early years of the organisation were a recurring prominent and positively coloured topic of public debate, largely disappeared from view. The multilateral approach to world trade policy now found virtually no public resonance.
Today, great powers - this time even mega powers - are again pulling the strings in world trade.
From Seattle to Berlin
Parallel to the decline of multilateralism, the critique of globalization has become increasingly fierce; this is also clearly visible in our analyses. The first major anti-globalization demonstration - at the Seattle Summit in 1999, known (and filmed) as the "Battle in Seattle" - was explicitly directed against the WTO. In other words, it was directed against the institution that was supposed to curb the major economic powers and establish a fairer world economic order by imposing general rules.
This negative narrative about globalisation is then really taking off in the wake of the financial crisis. In Germany, it is being spun further than the negotiations on a comprehensive transatlantic economic agreement (TTIP) began in the decade. Resistance to the allegedly so damaging trade deal finally culminates in a major demonstration in Berlin. TTIP was therefore effectively dead long before Trump became US president.
And yet: a new era has begun in 2017. A self-confessed protectionist has moved into the White House and will probably stay there for quite some time - after having survived the impeachment and the false pre-election start of the democratic competition last week. The USA, the former guarantor power of the rule-based world trade order, has given up its role. The present is now marked by trade conflicts between the major economic areas; and this struggle for short-term advantages is being fought mainly outside the WTO.
Between July 2018 and June 2019 alone, import restrictions were imposed worldwide on goods worth around 800 billion dollars. In various cases, the Trump government has presented import tariffs as being motivated by security - a justification from the Cold War era that cannot be verified by the multilateral trade regime.
At the end of 2019, the dispute settlement mechanism for trade disputes also effectively lost its functionality: in December 2019, the WTO appeals body became unable to rule because the US government refused to appoint new judges.
Recently, the USA and China agreed on a temporary mercantile ceasefire. But a new era of rule-based free trade is not in sight.
It is remarkable: Since Trump set off and his trade conflicts began, many former globalization critics have discovered their heart for WTO-moderated free trade. Suddenly the multilateral system seems to them to be a promise. At a time when development has probably passed over it.

2019.12.29 21:03 Freight Graveyard Encounter

My name is Hailey Capstone, and the following is my account of what transpired between June 2017 - January 2018. I am writing this to just… just have some sort of record of what happened, and maybe down the line, someone will find value in my story.
In the summer of June 2017, I landed a lucrative position in Massachusetts working at the well- known accounting firm, Ebelstien & Co. There I was, freshly 28 years old, a first time homeowner, with a starting salary of $80,000 to boot. The house, albeit small, was hidden away in the outskirts of the city. I only had one neighbor to my left, and none to the right. Roughly, 100 feet from my doorway led to a forest trailhead. Being a cross-country runner throughout high school, this was the major selling point for me. The realtor didn’t even need to provide a tour of the house, or try to persuade me with cookies, all she needed to do was point toward the towering spruce and aspen trees that ran parallel to the house.
The forest trail was breathtaking. I hadn’t ran since graduating, so for my first week in town, I simply walked the trail and embraced the treasures that frequently appeared. An aspen grove dominated the first mile of the path. Their trademark cat eyes always vigilantly observing, and judging as my feet crunched the leaves that once hung upon their branches. In the fall, the trademark vibrant red, orange, and yellow of the season dominated the eye. A constant, picturesque sunburst to those that are lucky enough to witness. At the one mile marker, the aspen grove opens up to a large field of long grass that stretches outward in an oval shape about 500 feet in all directions. At this marker, the trail branches off into six different possible routes, each winding their way into a separate section of the dense trees that lie past the lush field. Over the proceeding weeks, I began my running routine once again. I started to explore each of the six unique routes, and began mapping out the intricate topography, while simultaneously praising the plethora of life. Each run and each trail seemed more mesmerizing than the last, the forest had untold gems at every nook and corner. The trails quickly became my home, my safe haven, a place where I could be free and find a sense of nirvana in this new and daunting period of my life and career.
In the fall of 2017, I was running on the fifth route, Wayland’s Loop, one I seldom trailed due to frequent bear sightings reported by the locals. About two and a half miles in, I noticed what seemed to be a wooden structure atop a small hill in the distance beyond my right shoulder. The pines and shrubbery dominated the area, making the forgotten building difficult to spot. I stopped to get a better look, and sure enough, there was the foundation of a wooden house in the distance. Time had certainly taken its toll; only one of the four walls remained upright. As a proud adventurist, and with my obsession of all things old, I found my feet off the beaten path. I stomped my way up the hill. I reached the wooden wall first, which I presumed to be the back of the house. The wood had become dark, weak, and rotten, it struggled to keep its footing. I made my way north, toward where the front of the house would have been. As I curved around the lonely wall, I noticed headstones dotted along the previously hidden slope of the hill. “A graveyard,” I whispered aloud to myself.
I continued my way around what I now assumed was once a steeple or a place of prayer for those mourning their lost loved ones. Nature had overrun the tiny steeple, grass now danced back and forth where humans of the past once knelt, screamed, wept, and prayed. Fragments of rotten wood could be found peppered throughout the area, but no other evidence of a man made building persisted any longer. The rotting wall was the only indication of what used to be, and once it fell, this area likely will erase into history. I turned my back from the ground, and stepped toward the edge of the graveyard to take in the full view. Ahead of me, about 40 headstones emerged from the leaf-infested ground. The warm fall colors flaunted from the leaves, making it appear as if the headstones were being swallowed by swimming lava. Scattered throughout the grounds were tree saplings, slowly working their way upwards towards total domination of the yard. On the left most side of the hill, was a large oak tree that had shed all its foliage, only a shell of its former glory remained. From the oak, five large branches twisted toward the sky, and one branch stretched horizontally above the gravestones. The oak looked exhausted, just like the wall of chapel behind me, prepared to be consumed into nothingness.
The sun began to set quicker than I anticipated, and I checked my watch. 5:00 P.M flashed in LED. I wanted to examine a few of the gravestones before my long run home, I rushed to the second row of headstones and knelt down beside the first engraving.“JOHN QUINCYBORN 1824- DECEASED 1845
The last letters had been eroded away, but I assumed it read “hospitality.” The 1800’s… the graveyard and its inhabitants were old, my heart fluttered with excitement. By the eighth headstone, the sun had fallen deeper into the horizon, signaling that visiting hours were over. I spun around on my toes, reinvigorated for the road home. As I finished the 180-degree turn, my body froze in fear.
Gazing up the incline back to the forgotten chapel, the sun had cast a shadow of the oak tree against the hill. The sun was setting at just the right angel, which distorted and elongated the glooming oaks shadow. The large branch that hovered above the deceased, had its shadow cast against the grass just above the plot, and from that, shadow hanged a man. The shadow of the body was limp, with the victim’s neck and head drooping toward their left shoulder, a slave to gravity. A slight breeze rolled in from the east, and the body began to swing gently with the breeze on cue. For two minutes, time stood still as I darted my eyes from the hanged shadow gliding in the fall wind, to the actual oak branch to my right, whose branch hung with no rope, or human. Oddly, in this moment, I expected to hear the creaking of the rope wrapped around his neck as he swung victim to the wind. I was greeted with absolute silence instead.
I can’t recall how long I stood there, staring, petrified, and totally lost as to what my next action should be. I landed on what seemed to be the most logical step, climb up the hill, and just before heading back down the other side I will take one last look back at the oak tree. I powered up the slope, and shut my eyes as I treaded across the shadow of the body, goosebumps crept upward from my toes to my knees as I passed. Safely atop the hill, I built the courage to turn around, and take in the sight one final time. The ancient oak tree and all its branches were bare, just like when I arrived. I shifted my view downwards towards its shadow, and there the silhouette still was, hanging from that branch. The body began violently convulsing and kicking, as if striving for one last breath. “What… the fuck…..” I slapped myself in the face hard enough to leave bruising, closed my eyes, and opened them again. The shadow was still again, after a period of dumbfounded stares at the stationary body, he began convulsing again, only this time, he continued for a minute or more.“WHAT THE FUCK!” I shrieked. My voice bounced and echoed against the trees, engulfing the graveyard with my unease. The shadow slowly ceased his temper tantrum, timed perfectly with the fading of my echo. The words now lost to air, his feet gently dangled back and forth.
The sun was nearly fully set below the horizon; the scene ahead grasped me fully, frozen in time and bodily function. The shadow had begun to elongate deeper into the hills with the sun, and within minutes, into the nothingness of night, the hangman had washed away, just like the steeple. I remained, feet planted, with fear and shock taking the wheel. What had I just witnessed? The moon had crept above the horizon, and the cold crisp air rushed its way into the graveyard. The forming goosebumps and bodily shivers are what snapped me out of my trance. I backed away slowly, and clumsily made my way back to the trail, and began my journey home. I was certainly not feeling reinvigorated anymore.
I didn’t sleep that night, instead choosing to relive the scene over and over in my bedroom. I poured over possible explanations, but in the end, had come to none. I accepted that this was something potentially super-natural and otherworldly, or most likely, a severe chemical imbalance in my brain. By the break of dawn, I actually was craving to see him again. I wanted to understand him, was he lost, or trapped, friendly, or evil, help-able or eternally hanged?
It took me five days to visit the graveyard once more. I had spent the week preparing, and planning for my second visit. When I placed my hand on the trailhead this time, I didn’t look like a runner; I looked like a hiker with full camping gear. I packed a windbreaker, sweater, gloves, tent, portable gas stove, a knife (three actually), enough food to last me through the night, and a 9mm my Dad had given to me when I moved away for college. I navigated my way down the fifth trail, and soon enough, I was welcomed once more by the hill with the ravished chapel. I slowed my steps as I approached the top of the hill, and took my time in revealing the graveyard before me. Everything looked unchanged in the 5 days I was missing; only the rot in the singular wall had spread slightly. Upon first inspection, no shadow seemed out of the ordinary, and the oak tree only cast its own shadow, with a bare branch. Disappointment washed over me, no hanged shadow.
I set up my tent atop the hill, in front of the remaining wall of the chapel. I didn’t want anyone from the trail to be alerted to my presence here; besides, I wasn’t exactly in a dedicated campsite. After the tent was made homely, I sat down to examine the graveyard again. Still nothing. I looked at my watch.
3:30 P.M.I opened the flap to the tent, and made my way inside. I laid sideways in the sleeping bag, and peered out of the open flap, a perfect view to the graveyard below. I stared, wondering, and waiting for something to happen. I don’t recall falling asleep, but when I woke up, I saw only the bright orange of the inside of my tent. I had rolled over in my sleep. I looked at my watch.
“5:00 o’clock,” I angrily snorted under my breath. Upset that I had fallen asleep, I began to roll myself over to look out the flap. I saw a gradient of particles and dust in the air drifting across the graveyard, as sunlight crashed through the withering branches of the oak. My eyes followed their trail, and soon feel upon the shadow of same branch from before. The shadow of the rope had appeared once more tied to the base of the branch, though the noose at the other end no longer held a prisoner.
Surprised by the lack of the main attraction, I hesitantly rose to my feet outside the tent. I strapped on my headlamp, picked up my knife, and holstered the pistol. I cautiously made my way toward the bottom of the hill, where the shadow of the noose currently beckoned. I crept to a crawl as I neared the shadow, and bent down into a squat before it. I reached my hand out to touch where the rope met the branch, expecting to feel the rough threading against my fingertips. Instead, I only felt the dead leaves on the ground, and the green soft grass directly below. I rose to my feet, and took three steps following the rope, towards the noose at the other end. I squatted once more, and gently brushed the grass as I outlined the loop of the noose. I remember closing my eyes, and tracing the shadow with my hand repeatedly, before a thought occurred to me.
I made my way onto the ground, and laid my head directly where the shadow of the noose dangled, beckoning for a rider. From the top of the hill, the scene must have looked like an art piece fit for a museum. The shadow of a noose gently caressing the neck of the very real women that lay in its wake. As I laid, my neck snug in the shadow, I shut my eyes and for a moment felt blissful. The sunlight was warm against my face, and the noose housed my neck safely. I began to sway my head left and right. Sure enough, behind my closed eyelids, I could perceive the sunlight hitting me when I remained stationary. Yet when I moved my line of sight left and right, where the rope would have been in the “real world”, I could see the difference in lighting. It was as if I was passing through the shade of the rope, yet nothing truly hung from that tree branch.
I burst into laughter, perhaps it was the adrenaline, fear, or just my mind trying to comprehend what my closed eyes saw. To this day, I have not laughed harder in my life, then at that graveyard, nestled in that noose. I remained, laughing and twisting my head left and right, tears welling up from bliss. Eventually the gut busting jolly died down into intermittent chuckles, as I began to feel relaxed and my eyes felt surprisingly heavy. I fell fast asleep.
When my eyelids lifted again, I could see the large oak just ahead of me, its branches twisted and blended into the night sky. Above the branches, a full moon illuminated the graveyard, and with it, glorious shadows. I yawned deeply, feeling rejuvenated, and hopped to my feet. I patted my pocket and felt the knife, then I patted my holster and felt the pistol, both weapons were accounted for still. I spun around to look down at the shadow of the oak.
Fear struck again. The noose still hung no passenger, but the branch did. The shadow of a man, a perfect black silhouette, squatted on top the branch. He had no distinguishable face, or eyes, but I felt his eyes boring holes right through me. I shot my head over my shoulder, a quick glance, to confirm there wasn’t an actual man creeping on me, squatting on a branch. Nothing. I turned back to look at the shadow, my hand settled permanently on the pistol holster. The shadow remained squatted there, unflinching. After an unwelcoming staring contest, I found my voice.
“Hello?” The word squeaked out of me like a scared child looking for her mother.
His head tilted ever so slightly from the sound, like a dog hearing its name from afar.
“Can you hear me?”
He did nothing.
“My name is Hailey, I live nearby… I saw a figure here earlier this week. It was hanging by that noose.” I pointed toward the ground, “Was that you?”
Again nothing, I waited with baited breathe. An arm of the man moved from its place on the branch, and outstretched it towards me. He gently slid his hand through the air in a circular motion. It was the exact same way I had brushed the noose not 1 hour ago before I had drifted into my vicarious dreams on the hill.
“So that was you. Are you a… or were you a person? Can I help you somehow?” I asked with a slight newfound confidence.
No response or motions, just squatting and peering into me. I continued to ask the man similar phrased questions for about 15 minutes, to no further avail. The figure just remained, like a statue, a guardian of the graveyard.
“Are you protecting this graveyard?” I asked, beginning to feel angry, likely a side effect of dwindling adrenaline.
He once again, reached out his hand, made the same circle in the air, and returned to his position.
I began to feel hungry. I made my way back up to the campsite and warmed chicken noodle soup on the portable gas stove. All the while, I watched the shadow perched on the branch, not letting him out of my sight. Even though I now sat atop the hill, it still looked, and felt as if he was glaring right through me. I sat against an aspen just outside the tent, and ate my soup, a very welcome warmth to the body. The rest of the night we remained locked in place, two statues in an unending showdown. The shadow from its perch, and me against my aspen. My mind flooded with thoughts, but the one thought that persisted… Why wouldn’t he show me more, why was he just sitting there? Fucking move, communicate with me! “I am the only one who cared enough to come back I bet, why don’t you do something!” I shouted down to the figure, delirious from exhaustion. I didn’t even know the time.
The moon had fallen, and the sun began to reign once more. During that lunar shift change, the figure had vanished in the brief period of total darkness void of shadows. Now only the shadow of the branch cast itself across the headstones on the far side of the graveyard with the morning dew. I had not seen the graveyard in the morning before, it looked peaceful, and serine. Tired from the events of the night, I longed for home. I packed my equipment, and made my way back to the trailhead, while planning my next steps.
I had become fast friends with a co-worker, Rebecca (Becky) Simosa, who worked in the HR department. We had clicked ever since my orientation and we spent time with each other outside of work frequently. I had concluded that I needed another witness to the shadows of the graveyard; I had to rule out that I was not just going senile. I invited Becky over the night after my return from the graveyard. She arrived at 6:00 p.m. and carried a pizza from Valcino’s for us to share. Becky was stunning, with long brown hair, a fair complexion, and a body that made all of our male coworkers howl.
“Are you feeling ok? You look like shit.” Becky asked after I opened the door to greet her.
“I’m... I’m fine…” I answered, surprised by the comment. I looked over my shoulder to the mirror that hung next to the door. I had not changed out of my pajamas pants, or my raggedy t-shirt I had on since last night. My hair was a blonde de-shelved mess with the majority of hair pointing out towards the ceiling from static. All day, my thoughts had revolved on the man squatted and-staring at me. I hadn’t even realized that I never had prepared for the day; I don’t even remember the morning and midafternoon happening.
Becky smiled, and made her way into the house. As she passed, I quickly threw on a sweater that hung next to the door, and straightened my hair with hands and spit in the mirror.
Becky had set the pizza on the dining table, poured a glass of merlot for each of us, and plated slices. I sat down at the table and swallowed the glass of wine in one go.
“Are you feeling okay Hailey?” Becky asked with concerned eyes, as she sipped from her glass.
After a short period of silence, I asked “Do you believe in ghosts…. or in the paranormal?” my eyes avoiding her, I feared judging eyes.
“Are you going to tell me your house is haunted next?” She asked with a smirk and a chuckle.
“I am serious,” I retorted back.
Becky must have felt the intensity in my tone of voice, as she took a deep breath and collected her thoughts before responding.
“When I was 10 years old, I used to think… or maybe I really did… see my deceased grandma at night. She would sit in the corner of my bedroom and just... watch me. I would call out to her, but she wouldn’t respond, just watch me. It never felt hostile, it mostly felt… sad. “She paused, and took a drink of her wine. “So… I would say I’m a believer, but I have never seen blatant evidence, besides my experience with Gammy.” I could see mulling over the story had struck a sore point in Becky.
“Anyways, can you cut to the chase Hailey… what is going on?” Becky began to eat her pizza as she looked back at me.
I proceeded to tell Becky everything that had happened since I first stumbled upon the old broken down wall of the chapel.
“…which brings us to the here and now. Do you believe me?” I asked.
Becky reached over, and held my hand.
“I believe you Hailey,” she said supportively.
She had been attentive and surprised throughout the story, as far as I could tell, her answer was genuine, and she did believe me.
“But Hailey, you should really eat, instead of destroying your food,” Becky said with a smile, and motioned downward to my plate with her eyes.
I had ripped apart the pizza into hundreds of pieces as I told the story, again with no recollection of having done this. I blushed, grabbed another slice from the box, and took a bite. Feeling better that Becky believed me, I built up the courage to ask her to accompany me next time.
“Becky, I brought you here, and told you my story because…because I was hoping you would be willing to go to the graveyard with me next weekend. I just want another witness, you know, to confirm I don’t need to check into a mental health facility. Maybe you can also help me figure out what this man wants…”
The first signs of doubt and fear set into Becky’s face as I asked the question.
“Hailey I….” she started bleakly.
“You don’t have to come,” I quickly respond, realizing her hesitancy.
Becky took a moment, and then her face reverted to the smiling and supportive variety she was known for. Again she grabbed my hand, rubbed it with her thumb and said, “Of course I will go with you….please tell me you have another gun for me though?” Becky asked jokingly.
Next Saturday approached quickly, Becky and I had discussed our plans throughout the week, and had gathered the necessary equipment for the trip, including a brand new pistol for Becky. As I closed the door to my house on Saturday, I asked her one last time before we headed to the forest.
“You are positive you want to do this?”
“Yes, I am actually oddly excited after all of our talks and preparation. Let’s start the adventure!” Becky slapped my shoulder, and headed toward the forest as she answered. I locked the deadbolt, and quickly jogged to catch up to Becky.
We reached the point of the trail where you could see the lonely chapel wall. I stopped and pointed it out to Becky.
“That is where we are going.”
I saw Becky’s face sink slightly; likely realizing the first part of the story was actually true.
We made our way to the top, and I looked over the graveyard again. I smiled, looking over the familiar fire of leaves as they hugged the headstones. I shifted my sight toward the shadow of the oak; the man was not present. I checked my watch, 12:30 p.m. I looked over at Becky; her face had become ghost white, staring down at the headstones and the large oak tree.
“Are you ok?” I asked.
No answer.
No answer.
I snapped my fingers in front of her eyes.
“Becky, are you okay?”
She turned to look back at me, and the emptiness slowly faded from her gaze when our eyes met.
“I am sorry, it’s just… it looks exactly as you described it. It took me by surprise.”
I could tell what she meant.
“You didn’t believe my story originally, did you?” I asked.
“I do now.” she replied hesitantly. I could tell a new fear had set into her; perhaps bringing her was not the best idea.
“Come on, let’s set up camp and have lunch. The man doesn’t show up usually until the evening, at least I think.”
We made camp, had lunch, and enjoyed the scenery as best we could while we waited for a sign of the man. Becky seemed to have eased her nerves, as 2 PM approached she was making jokes, laughing, and examining the headstones below. I watched her from against the aspen where I previously had an intimate staring contest with the shadow man. My eyes shifted from Becky, to the shadow of the oak, hoping to sight the tempting stranger. Eventually I dozed off, and fell into pleasant dreams of traveling the world by a private jet.
“Hailey!” I heard from within my dream jet.
I could not find the source.
“HAILEY!” louder now and full of panic.
I still could not identify the source in the plane.
The shouting had worked, as my eyelids lifted, and I saw Becky’s face directly in mine. She had been shaking and shouting for me to awake from my slumber. Her face was pale; her mouth was quivering, and her eyes wide with adrenaline. I could see goosebumps climbing up her arm as it shook my shoulder. I knew the man had arrived.
“He is here,” I said confidently.
She gave a weak nod, and moved from my line of sight.
I rose to my feet, Becky and I gazed down in amazement at the shadow of the oak.
“I thought you said he just sat their squatting!” Becky said accusingly.
“I have never fucking seen him do that Becky!” pointing downward at the shadow.
The shadow man was full of energy, jumping up and down from his squatting position, and pacing quickly back and forth across the branch. He moved like a gorilla, with his knuckles dragging against the branch, while always maintaining the squatting position. He would make his way back to the middle of the branch right above the noose, raise his hands above his head and clap violently, with a speed I had not seen before. He would repeat this over and over, jumping up and down from his squatting position for a while, then quickly pace across the branch, make his way back to the center, clap violently, then start jumping again. He was in a constant loop.I looked over at Becky, her eyes swimming in the trance of his performance.
“We need to go down there,” I said to her.
“Fuck that,” she responded without looking away from the man.
I looked up at the horizon; the sun was just beginning to set.
“We don’t have much time, soon the sun will set, and we won’t have a full moon tonight. He is a shadow. He can’t hurt us.” I grabbed Becky’s shoulder as I said this to help snap her out of her trance.
She looked over at me, and reluctantly nodded her head. We both ensured our weapons were on us, and took the first steps down the hill toward the shadow below. The moment we began to head down the hill, the man became more energetic began to viciously jump up and down from his perch, and began to clap his hands together so violently and fast that any living human would have been in pain by the third clap. We passed the shadow, and turned around so that we were no longer looking at him from above, and looked upon him “right side up.” The man stopped his jumping and clapping and began a new routine.
Now, he would pull on the rope of the noose below him slightly and make the circular motion in the air just as he did during my last visit. Next, he would imitate reading a book, and then he would stand up like a human, the first time I had seen him not squatting, and would imitate digging. He would reset at this point, and pull the rope again, make a circle hand motion, imitative reading, then imitate digging.
“Are you trying to tell us something?” I stupidly asked, expecting a response.
He only repeated the cycle.
“Do you want us to go to the library to research? Did someone dig up your body?” I asked.
He only repeated the cycle.
I looked over at Becky, who was in another trance just watching the man.
“Can you do anything else; I don’t know what you want!” I said angrily.
“I know what he wants,” Becky whispered.
Surprised I turned to look at Becky again, a smile was now fashioned across her face.
“I know what he wants!” She said again and began to run up the hill toward the campsite.
“Becky, what does he want?” I yelled at her, running up the hill to follow.
When I arrived at the tent, Becky was already pulling out two flashlights from her pack, and threw one at me. I caught it, and watched as Becky started to race down the hill once more.
“Becky!” I shouted down after her as she ran down the hill.
Aggravated at being ignored, I followed suit yet again. Becky had stopped at the first headstone of the graveyard, turned on her flashlight, and began to examine the markings. Upon my arrival, I grabbed Becky from the shoulders, and spun her so that we were face to face. Her eyes were no longer full of fear, instead replaced by crazed excitement.
“Becky, we need to be on the same page if we are going to figure this out. Now tell me, what the hell does that thing want!?”
She looked at me for a period, then said, “Isn’t it obvious?” she pointed to the man who was still in his routine, and began to explain each step.
The man pulled on the rope, and made the circle of the noose in the air.
“He died by hanging,” Becky explained.
The man imitated reading.
“He wants us to read the headstones to figure out which is his.”
The man imitated digging.
“And he wants us to dig him up.”
The last portion didn’t sit well with me.
“Dig him up? We aren’t going to dig up a grave, right?” I asked.
No response. I turned around to look back at her, but she had already continued her work and was examining the second headstone. Reluctant, and full of unease, I made my way to the back of the graveyard, started at the other end, and began examining headstones.
The fifteenth headstone is the one that caught my eye, and I called out to Becky as I took a step back and pointed my light on the writing. Becky made her way over, and she looked down at the headstone and read aloud.
“Here lies John William Porter, 1809-1850, hanged for his crimes to the townsfolk.” Becky and I looked at each other, then over our shoulder to the shadow of the man. The sun had nearly set, and the shadow of the man had elongated into a giant and was about to disappear into the nights darkness. He was clapping more violently than ever. We could barely see the movement of his arms; they were moving so fast. Then the giant began imitating digging like a dog vigorously, then faded away into darkness with the setting sun. Becky dropped to the ground and started digging with her hands, just like the man.
“Becky, are we really doing this?” I had lost all interest in continuing further, and the shadow man no longer infected my mind. I stopped the adventure when grave digging became a request.
“Yes, he wants to be found,” she snorted as she dug with no care.
“Becky… I… I don’t know if we should be doing…“
“Look!” she said, grabbing something that had been buried only beneath the surface. It was a very old shovel, which Becky excitedly presented to me. I felt my stomach sink. She stood and began to use the shovel to dig further into the ground.
“Becky, this all seems too convenient, a shovel was placed there for a reason, and someone or something wants to be dug…”
“Shut up Hailey!” she shouted while looking back at me. “You are the one who dragged me out here, and wanted to solve the mystery. Well it’s solved, now all we need to do is dig to have the conclusion,” she said with a grin.
“I can’t be a part of this. We should just go home and never come back.”
“I am finishing this Hailey; you can do whatever the fuck you want.” Becky began to dig again.
Becky wasn’t the same; she went from being hesitant, to an avid fan girl of the shadow.
I retreated slowly back to the top of the hill, and leaned against the aspen once again staring down at Becky working ferociously with the little light provided from the flashlight. I unholstered my 9mm, and held it close as I continued to watch, until I nodded off once more around 2 AM when I could not hold open my eyes any longer. No dreams happened that night. I woke up around 7 AM, and was welcomed by the warm, fiery fall colors below. I could see Becky at the edge of the grave, which was now fully dug; she was pulling and heaving on a rope she had brought with her pack. Slowly a very old wood coffin crept its way into view from the hole. She gave it one last hard heave, and fell backward on the ground. The coffin now laid in the lava of leaves. I stood up and made my way down toward Becky and the coffin, she looked weak and tired from the night of digging. I reached Becky who still laid there, breathing heavily and looking up to the sky smiling.
“Come on, let me help you up,” I reached out my hand, and she took it.
Becky got to her feet, covered in sweat, dirt, and aspen leaves that now clung throughout her hair and dirty clothes.
“Let’s get you something to eat and drink,” I said, putting my arm around her and starting to make my way to the camp.
“No!” She shoved my arm off her shoulder. “Help me prop the coffin against the oak tree.”
“Becky, I think you need food and to take a break.”
“I have worked all night for this. Hailey please just help me with this, and then I promise to eat and take a break.” She looked at me with gentle eyes.
I agreed to help, since the kind and loving Becky seemed to have come back.
We dragged the coffin over to the oak using the rope, and worked together to lift one side and prop it up right again the tree.
“I am going to open it,” Becky stated purposefully.
“Can we eat and talk about this before we open a coffin from 1850?” I asked.
“No, I am opening it.” Becky reached out to pry open the coffin as she spoke.
A strong wind came through the same time the coffin was opened, and the orange, red, and yellow leaves flittered across my sight. Time slowed and froze the moment that coffin opened. Sure enough, John was inside, though the standard decomposition of a body had not occurred. The skin of the man was still very much there, and hugged his bones tightly. Imagine just stretching skin over a skeleton, and that is what old John looked like now. The sun had cast a shadow of John’s body against the inside of the coffin. The moment the coffin opened, I watched as the shadow from John’s riddled body began to move downward toward the ground, as if it were a living being. The shadow slowly crept its way outside of the coffin, onto the grass, until finally touching the feet of Becky. Her body stiffened instantly. I heard the faint sounds of an incredibly painful breath come from old John, struggling for air, as if he hadn’t taken a breath since his burial. Becky looked back at the struggling man, and then she reached her hands into the coffin and grabbed John’s head. She snapped his head 180 degrees with incredible force.
Becky, or whatever was possessing her now, began to scream as if she just had the most intense and pleasurable orgasm of her life.
“Fuck! The mental shrieks of that man were so exquisite!” Becky roared and chuckled, her laughter radiating through her entire body. A mixture of confusion and horror flooded my face. What was happening?
She spit on the man’s body, and said, “I will miss you sweetie. I am going to be having a good time with my new friend now.”
Becky turned around and met eyes with me. I had never seen eyes like that before, so empty, so vile, so evil. I instantly wet my pants from fear. She walked over to me slowly, and began to rub her hand against the crotch of my jeans, feeling the fresh urine.
“Where was this scared girl when we first met? I would have chosen you if I knew you had this kind of fear in you,” she said as she moved her hand, soaked in urine, across her own neck.
“Perfume for the road,” she said with a giggle.
She leaned in, kissed me on the cheek, and whispered into my ear, “Next time don’t act so tough when you see me.” She moved away and began to walk up the hill as I stared unmoving. She continued her previous statement. “For now I am going to enjoy the screams and agony of your friend here, come find me sometime! You know the venue I like.”
Speechless, I watched Becky walk to the top of the hill.
She looked back down to me and shouted, “Since you were so kind to provide me with your wonderful perfume, I think it’s only fair that you have my name. You can call me Vaquir. I truly hope we meet again soon!” Becky turned around, and then began to skip and twirl away until she was out of my sight.
What had just happened? Who the fuck is Vaquir? I stared in disbelief at the spot where Becky had twirled away. I was terrified of whatever had possessed her. I knew that if I went after it/her now, it would not end well for me. I shuddered at the thought of Becky being trapped, with nothing but fear and agony to keep her company. As I prepared to leave after some time, I felt determined to figure out who or what Vaquir was, and how it took over Becky’s body. What if she could be helped?
It has been seven years since that night and I have not seen Becky since. I miss my friend dearly. Ever since that day, I have dedicated all my time to locating Becky. I traveled to countless historical locations and libraries to find any information on the name Vaquir. Historical records and stories date back to the Pagan era, and the most recent records are documented in the 1600’s with radio silence thereafter. All of the stories describe Vaquir as a demon who feeds off people’s fear and pain. Reports of Vaquir state that he has the ability to keep a human alive as long as it would like, keeping his captors in constant pain and agony.
The last reported sighting was in 1615, when a group of men had happened upon a woman who had tied logs to her feet, and jumped into a nearby lake. She had been reported missing for 65 years. When the men found her, her eyes were looking up at them from below in the lake, still alive, with her face frozen in a scream. This poor woman had experienced the grisliness and agony of drowning for 65 years under Vaquir’s influence. The men had reportedly pulled her out, and upon getting her to land, one of the men had brutally stomped upon her face as she took her first gasps of air. The man reportedly could not live with the guilt, walked away from the scene, and was never heard from again. The detail of how these men found the woman confirmed to me that it was Vaquir. The men had all reported seeing the silhouette of a woman in the water, pointing them upstream toward her location. In total, I had found about eight records throughout history that indicated Vaquir’s involvement. Each story had a mysterious shadow or silhouette guiding potential new victims, and a victim held frozen in time, in incredible pain. The stories also involved a brutal murder of the victim by those who found them, often reported as a kindness to put the pour soul out of their misery. I knew though… I knew that it was not a kindness, and instead it was Vaquir inhabiting a new victim, and disposing of the old. I know that Vaquir is real, and I know one thing that the stories did not, he uses shadows to infect his victims.
I am currently writing to you from a coffee shop in Seattle. The past seven years I have been searching across the country for any signs of Becky, hoping that maybe I can save her somehow. This morning I finally found her. Across the street from this coffee shop is a graveyard, and one of the headstones reads:
I miss my friend dearly, but I really don’t want to come back at sunset to see Vaquir once again. I know she is buried alive, with Vaquir feasting on her pain. It has only been seven years, so maybe, just maybe, she could be saved. I can’t do it alone though. I am reaching out to all of you; please help me get her back. It was all my fault. She doesn’t deserve this.

2019.11.08 17:47 AH-KU Tekken 7 Weekly Character Discussion: Master Raven

General Playstyle

Continuing in the vein of the previous character discussion; Master Raven, like Nina, has been suffering from a perception problem. For a long time Raven has erroneously been painted as a very difficult, hopelessly complex character that is nothing but gimmicks. A false perception that likely may have scared off newcomers or any curious hopefuls.
Truthfully, Raven is a versatile character armed with a wealth of tools that allows for a great deal of player expression. Her movelist may seem intimidating at 1st but you can have a very effective Raven using a relatively small portion of that movelist. What is (or more appropriately was until Zaf showed up) unique about Raven is that unlike other stance characters, she isn’t strictly required to be devoted to her stances to get going like Lei, nor would she be sorely lacking or neutered without her stances like Ling & Hwo would be if you took away AOP/RDS and FLA/RFF respectively. Indeed, watch JDCR’s Raven & you’ll realise he barely uses BT. So like Zafina, you can ignore most of the flashy stuff and get by on playing a very simple moving and poking game. This is why Raven is considered to be versatile; her toolkit allows her to play at either end of the simple/galaxy brain spectrum (or anywhere in-between) and be very effective at both.
Raven excels through her poking, fluid movement, high overall damage output and limitless mixup potential. She is fundamentally a poking character but has a preferred range, dancing about range 1~2. This is the range where Raven can make use of her ranged pokes and whiff punishers. This is further enforced by Raven having a top tier backdash as well as a unique, almost wavedash-esque, crouch-dash which allows her to quickly close gaps and zip back to her preferred range.
All of this makes for a very nimble character. In terms of offense, Raven has the tools to do well at various ranges. However Raven struggles defensively at close range. Again re-enforcing the idea of Raven being a mid-range fighter where she thrives the most. While her whiff punishment is strong, her block punishment is below average and she has very little in the way of low-risk panic buttons. This is why you’ll find Raven players will usually prefer to play on an infinite stage. In spite of her amazing wall damage, its easier for Raven to get the space she wants without ever having to worry about getting backed into a corner. In addition to that she can still deal great damage without walls. Several of her bnb’s hit up to late 70’s / early 80’s in damage and she has a RD conversion that totals 104 damage without walls, which isn’t niche nor difficult to pull off.
And finally, even though Raven does allow for creative play, its usually better to play her in a simple manner, especially when coming to grips with the character. In fact the most important thing to focus on when it comes to learning Raven is improving your fundamentals, since she benefits so much from good movement and spacing. As well as just playing with an active mind in general. Since Raven is quite open-ended, you actually can’t flow-chart or play passively with her. These are qualities which are player-driven more so than they are character-driven anyways. And Master Raven herself even warns, “I hope your affairs are in order”. You ought to build a good foundation before you can really take advantage of all the party stuff.

Notable Players/streamers

The following is a list of players worth checking out and keeping tabs on. Listed are players and streamers of various skill levels, as it helps anyone learning a character to not only watch high-level but mid-level play as well, since mid-level is more easier to follow and digest.
Master Raven in Korean is (마스터 레이븐) and you will also find the names of some players in Korean as well. This will make it easier to search for players in videos that don’t have English titles or to identify players in brackets for Korean events.
(EU) Tissuemon
The leader of the pack and basically the ambassador for Raven in the competitive scene. Tissuemon’s Raven can be said to be the jack-of-all-trades. He makes good use of many of her tools, though mainly prefers to play a poking and spacing game. He does stream although on an infrequent basis
(KOR) GoAttack (고어택)
Once considered to be the strongest Raven player on the planet. However he is no longer interested in competing seriously and only plays for fun now. While GoAttack is still a beast no doubt, he’s not quite as sharp as he used to be when he was still competing (primarily because even at TGP, a lot of players don’t know the Raven MU so he ends up steamrolling opponents through unfamiliarity in online ranked). GoAttack is the god of galaxy brain. BT mixups, mind-games, stance cancels; he has it all. But what made him really scary was how well he was able to switch between all the crazy stuff and just solid neutral play. He’s the only player who’s been able to maximise both ends of the Raven spectrum. And that’s what made him so good. GoAttack streams often but doesn’t have set a schedule, also while he doesn’t enter major tournaments anymore you can still find him participating in local events or team tournaments.
(JP) ShinChan (formerly Pinya)
A new face making a serious name for himself. The rate of ShinChan’s growth just this year alone has been very impressive to say the least. Only 2 months ago in September ShinChan just barely avoided getting washed 10-5 by CuddleCore in a deathmatch. Now he recently went undefeated at a Japanese dojo taking victories over Double, Ao, Take, Chikurin and Rangchu. His goal is to acquire the Japanese pro licence along with a sponsor. Should he manage to do so, he could soon become a serious contender on the global scene if he keeps improving at this rate. He does stream infrequently on YT but you can often find him at AnimeIlluminati’s Fighting Tuesday weekly. I really do hope ShinChan has the drive to play amongst the best. We can’t keep relying on the old guard to be representatives of high level Raven, as many of them have bowed out as serious competitors.
(KOR) Azrael (아즈라엘)
Azrael is an old player that also plays Raven for style points. The man’s reset game is on another level. He has so many different setups and is very good at disguising resets as dropped combos. Unfortunately I don’t think he streams nor uses social media.
(EU) Mr.Adam0
A long time veteran that’s now semi-retired. Adam0 had his heyday during the T6 era. He’s no longer a full-time competitor but still helps organize and participate in EU tournaments and is still an all-round solid Raven player. He even recently qualified to represent Sweden in the IeSF world tournament. Doesn’t have his own stream but will tweet about the events he’s taking part in.
(EU) Nindo
A rising talent amongst Raven competitors. His most notable achievement was 2-0’ing LowHigh at The Mixup earlier this year. What’s unique about him is his use of Raven’s CD. He’s able to constantly switch-up the rhythm and pacing of his CD. This is a game-changer for Raven as this was never before thought possible and I don’t think any other character can CD the way Nindo is able to with Raven. It opens up the possibilities of her CD game by allowing Raven to greatly change the timing of her CD mixup.
(EU) The Phantom
Most well known for his eccentric antics inside and out the game. The Phantom may not be amongst the strongest Raven players but he is certainly one of the most entertaining. The Phantom is all about the theatrics and while his style of play may not be up everyone’s alley, its certainly worth taking a leaf from his book.
(CAN) Spoodler
An up & coming Canadian player that 1st caught attention when he eliminated Speedkicks at Electric Clash. Admittedly he did win with party tricks but has become a much more solid since then. He’s been showing good growth throughout the year. The NA scene has been devoid of a good active competitive Raven player for a while and Spoodler could soon take the spot of strongest Raven in the NA region if he keeps it up. Thankfully streams regularly and is pretty easy-going.
(USA) Haezl
Another new face from the NA region in the competitive scene. Haezl put up a good fight against Gen at Summer Jam. Which coincidentally came at a time when some people (including Gen) were beginning to think Law was a counterpick to Raven. Also regular streamer that’s very friendly.
(PAK) Bilal Kaka
The resident Pakistani Raven player. He uses many characters but plays a lot of Raven. Frequently uploads replays on his Youtube Channel.
(AUS) RavenBoy
Long time Australian Raven player. Streams semi-regularly and sometimes travels out to Asian events as well.
Venezuelan Raven player that was notorious in the Tag2 era. During his heyday he’d often defeat JDCR and other high profile Korean players. Though he has slowed down. El Negro spent most of last year moving to the US to escape from the Venezuelan crisis. Now that he seems to have settled, hopefully he’ll be able to put time into Tekken again. Unfortunately doesn’t stream currently.
Other competitors to look out for:
(KOR) Ticket (용권 이)
(KOR) StrawberryJam (딸기잼) Not to be confused with a different Korean player by the name Strawberry
(KOR) ChoSaPa (조사파)
(KOR) Kor_Tabibito (타비비토)
(JP) Fukushi
(JP) Screamoo
(PH) Pica

Honourable mentions

(USA) Kongojack
For a while Kongojack was the most active competitive Raven player in the US. However since his last TWT appearance at NCR in April 2018, he seems to have gone almost completely off the radar. He did attend this year’s StrongStyle but that’s about it for tournaments. There are long gaps between uploads on his Youtube channel and he’s also deleted his Twitter account. Very likely that he’s turned his focus to IRL matters, maybe one day we’ll see him attending tournaments again. (Edit: Just noticed today that he's entering the RedBull Seattle Qualifier. So maybe he's active again?)
(USA) Gandido
One of the last US players to have had a serious chance at becoming Evo Champion. Gandido is now pretty much retired and doesn’t compete seriously anymore due to wrist complications. He’s more famously known as a Devil Jin player but has committed to Raven in his later days. Of course having reached a level of play where becoming Evo champ is within one’s grasp makes him a very credible source of knowledgeable and judgement. Expect to see him in probably 1 event each year.
What’s not known by many people these days is that JDCR mained Raven from his debut in T5 up until Tag2. JDCR can’t be considered to main the character anymore, but he plays her on his stream on the odd occasion and the dude still has a pretty mean Raven. You compare how he played Raven back in the T5 days up against Knee’s Bryan to today and his style is pretty much the same. JDCR’s signature movement and surgical level of poke-play suits Raven very well. Watching how he is able to dissect his opponents with pokes is poetry in motion. He’s the only Raven player to get so much mileage out of her df1, that you forget its slower than average. JDCR still finds Raven a lot of fun and in his own words states that there’s “no need for risky mixups. Just move a lot and poke all day. Get one launch and one final mixup at the wall.” That might sound like every char in the game but it definitely communicates the idea that, there’s no need to over-complicate Raven.

Pros and Cons

Key Moves (in no particular order)

db2 – Raven’s i13 mid that has a lot of utility. It’s her i13 punish and fastest BT transition. I’ve heard it remarked that her only i13 mid being a stance transition is a liability since it leaves Raven vulnerable or it wastes her turn if she has to exit the stance but neither of these statements are true. Raven has several defensive options from BT, the safest of which being her b3+4 manual turn around. Using b3+4 after db2 isn’t a waste of your turn, in fact it’s the start of the BT mindgame. Not committing to the BT mixup when your opponent is anticipating one is going to save you from abare attempts such as hopkicks and RA’s. Also without b3+4 you can't do stuff like this. The only real downside to this move is that while it can be made safe, you can’t SS after using it. There’s a lot more detail to dig into with db2 and Raven’s BT stance in general that it deserves its own guide ( which can be found here), and this post is quite long already.
d4 – Arguably Raven’s best low. D4 has good range and tracks fairly well in both directions. In S3 it was buffed to cause toe-grab stun on CH, which leaves Raven at +13kg. Couple this new change with the fact that d4 does high-crush & is also a bit evasive to short-range mids and you’ve got yourself a nice CH-fishing tool. Furthermore d4 leaves Raven in FC, so you can surprise your opponent with a FC mixup afterwards. And finally you can greatly extend this move’s reach by combining it with Raven’s QCF snakedash (different from her d/df crouch-dash) to effectively cover almost half-screen range. That has always been possible but just not widely known. So all in all, while not as fast as a generic d4, Raven’s d4 is a very loaded one.
3,3 – Another ranged poke with good tracking in both directions, the 1st hit actually tracks SSL while the 2nd tracks SSR. While not as loaded as d4, its still a solid neutral tool. At i14, this move is pretty much Raven’s df1 with better range and tracking. 3,3 now jails in T7, which makes it well suited for space control. After 3,3 on hit you can fish for a CH with 4,1 or df3 or d4 or just keep them in check with another standing 3. Or you can lock down movement with d4 or ff4. Speaking of ff4…
fF4 – The last ranged tracking tool on this list (lol). ff4 is great at range, particularly because the ff input allows you to control how much forward movement goes into the move. Ff4 also has such ridiculously good tracking, that it might as well be a homing move. It is -10 on block but if spaced well, it becomes very difficult to punish. Also because of ff4’s “ff” input it will automatically cancel crouch state. This makes it a good option to deter sidesteps after using a low. Tissuemon used this strat quite frequently in his match with JDCR at TWT Finals 2018. So mixing up ws2 and ff4 after lows that enter FC becomes a pretty good conditioning strat.
f2,3 – A whiff punisher with good reach and deals a chunky 31 dmg. This move has been buffed in S3 to being +6 on hit and forces crouch. So anytime you whiff punish anything with this move, your opponent is put into a very bad position, as they have limited options to avoid a 50/50 (her df2 will trade with anything that’s i10 and beat anything slower). Furthermore if you land f2,3 on P1 side, then your opponent can only SSR which is to Raven’s strong side, further limiting their defensive options. So very good incentive to use this move more often as it basically gives you free pressure on hit. Also both hits are -10 on block but you can delay the 2nd hit to score a CH KND and discourage punishment attempts.
4~3 _ df2 – These two moves are grouped together because they fulfil the same purpose as being launching whiff punishers. Both have extensions but these extensions are not meant to be used to push a mixup. They’re meant to you cover your ass in case you messed up your punish attempt. 4~3 has a great vertical hitbox that’s very reliable at scooping up low-profile stances and attacks with ducking animations or leave the opponent in FC. Very useful in the Ling matchup. Raven’s df2, whilst i16, has deceptively better range than you’d initially suspect. It of course doesn’t have as much reach as Jack’s df2 but better range than most generic df2’s. So it works well as a whiff punisher. Plus its also an elbow so its quite handy against Asuka and Noctis. Raven has other decent whiff punishers in iWS1, f4 and 3~4 tho df2 and 4~3 are going to be the most common alternatives to ff3.
uf4,4 – A fairly loaded low-crush mid. EU player The Phantom really shows how strong this uf4 is as a keepout tool. It’s one of the few moves Raven can throw out freely. Since the extension is not hitconfirmable (and -15), you’d really only use it if you were sure that the 1st hit would land. Before there was no real mixup to this move but there is now in S3. You can cancel the 2nd hit to go into BT. So if you’re opponent is being patient, you can open them up with a fast BT mixup.
bb2 – A jailing KND move with good pushback to make it safe. What makes this move useful is that firstly it tracks to Raven’s weak side (her right). Secondly bb2 is a sabaki parry, which means it has parry frames built into its start-up frames and when the parry is successful it returns HAZ4. It has a parry window of 8 frames, starting on frame 1. So it works somewhat well as a panic button, the only issue is its possible for Raven to get floated out of the HAZ4 if she parried in the middle of a string. Bb2 works better when trying to setup parry frametraps of sorts after certain moves like ws2, uf3 or uf4 on block or basically after any move with low to moderate minus frames. Keep in mind that it works like a regular parry, so it only works on high/mid punches and kicks.
d3 – A low with great framedata. An i14 low that is 0 and not minus on hit is quite rare. Not too bad at -12 on block either but just ensure that you’re up close when using this moves as it is quite stubby.
b2,2 – An alternative to db2 as a BT transition which provides different benefits. Firstly the second hit of b2,2 also tracks to Raven’s weak side. Secondly, if the 2nd hit lands on CH, then you get BT 1,4 guaranteed. B2,2 is also delayable so you can try fish for the CH. Thirdly b2,2 has more pushback on block than db2. This means Raven has greater evasion when exiting BT via b3+4 or db/b after b2,2 on block. All mids and highs will whiff if she exits BT with db/b. All downjabs (& any equally short ranged mids/highs) will whiff if she exits with b3+4. Lastly while b2,2 is slower than db2, it is less minus on block and much more plus on hit than db2.
WS1 – Raven’s i14 NH launcher from FC which isn’t a common thing in the cast. Tho it is -14 on block which adds risk. WS1 also makes for a solid whiff punisher if you’re able to crouch dash into iWS1 quickly. You may notice high level Raven players will often sidestep or backdash into crouch briefly. This is so that they can pull the trigger quickly on iWS1 in case of any whiffs. WS1 also seems to have a tiny bit of tracking towards Raven’s right but of course doing this move out of a crouch dash will re-align you with the opponent anyways.
WS2The infamous CH launcher. This is a safe on block, elbow mid which is pretty hard to interrupt. On normal hit, the opponent is put into nosebleed stun and Raven is +8. If the opponent does fall down during nosebleed then Raven gets a free ff4 or d4. Additionally, you can also play a bit of mind game after WS2 on block. There’s the bb2 frame-trap, mentioned earlier. And of course you could do ws2 and duck into another ws2 to keep fishing for a CH. Popular Korean streamer DaddyKing demonstrates how to get the most from this WS2 conditioning
FC df3+4 – No FC game would be complete without a good low, and this move will definitely get the opponent to duck. Sometimes referred to as spinaroonie or as Raven’s hellsweep, because functionally it is an unseeable KND low that forms part of a CD mixup. While the nature of this move’s inputs means its not as “instant” as a traditional hellsweep; it is a heavily loaded move. Raven’s hellsweep cannot be stepped in either direction, is a CH launcher and lowers Raven’s hurtbox considerably so it does tend go under some mids (the better to score that juicy CH). In S3 this move’s recovery was reduced by 9 frames, which gives Raven guaranteed follow-ups on NH and sets Raven up for good oki as well (particularly back-roll catches). The recovery reduction also makes it easier to convert the CH launch into a real combo. All these changes make completing the full string of Raven’s hellsweep almost redundant. The damage you get from completing the string is only a little better than going for the oki follow-ups. Additionally if you never choose to complete the string, you’ll be able to better anticipate converting off the CH launch.
d/df _ QCF – This is an interesting part of Raven because it really adds to the character’s uniqueness. Raven is a character that has 2 distinct fully fledged command dash inputs. She has a QCF (d/df/f) snakedash which works similarly to that of Paul, Feng, Lili etc. She also has a crouch dash which is just d/df and can functionally be used like a Mishima wavedash. They both have different properties and different uses. I will go into a lot more detail about their intricacies in a future video guide. Though briefly, know that Raven’s qcf dash allows Raven to greatly extend the range of certain standing moves like db2, df1, d4 etc. as well as improving their tracking due to the dash itself re-aligning with the opponent. Raven’s d/df crouch dash is useful for quickly closing gaps, applying mental pressure and of course, a FC 50/50 mixup. What’s also great is that Raven’s crouch dash will constantly crush highs. If executed properly there are no frames where she is considered standing (fishing for that CH ws2 would be much harder otherwise). Her crouch dash usually can only be chained twice but there is a way to extend the dash beyond that indefinitely.

ff3 – Raven’s iconic whiff punisher. Historically this has been the move Raven was most known for. On paper its an excellent whiff punisher: mid, low-crushing knee launcher. Though these days its more known for its terrible hitbox than anything else. Plenty of moves in the game that high-crush go underneath it despite ff3 being a mid. Currently Negan, Chloe, Geese and even Lei when BT can also duck it raw whenever they want. And that’s why its now only an honourable mention as Raven has alternative whiff punishers which are much more reliable. Efforts have been made to raise awareness about ff3 and hopefully it will receive a hitbox buff but until then, do be wary of using it. With all that said, ff3 also doubles as a launch punisher for lows that are -17 and above, since the ff input will automatically cancel crouch state. There are some lows where ws1’s limited range won’t connect and that is usually where using ff3 becomes handy.
Qcf4 – Long range NH launcher. Very good at clipping stray limbs. You want to use this move at a range where it’ll clip the opponent at the very tip of it’s hitbox and failing that, then it’ll at least whiff. On whiff, qcf4 creates space between Raven and the opponent, but on block it draws them closer. On top of that after qcf4 on block Raven is -14 and stuck in BT, the worst situation Raven can find herself in. A lot of people view qcf4 as a baiting tool but it’s better as a keepout tool, which even the bait setup is meant to emphasise. You’re supposed to make the opponent scared to approach with moves like qcf4, uf4, f2,3, d4 etc. Then when they’re hesitant, you close in with her CD. Qcf4 can also help with getting the opponent to respect her CD since qcf4 can clip their keepout attempts. While qcf4 is slow, it does crush highs.
f3~B – A BT transition that can be useful in certain situations. While f3 is -10 on block, f3~B actually reduces the recovery and makes the move -6 on block. Useful for making f3 safe and is also a sneaky BT transition that isn’t very obvious. Which means you can catch your opponent out with BT1+2 or create a whiff with db/b if they try to punish or take their turn. Or you could open them up with a BT mixup if they’re being patient. The BT transition is much better than gambling with the completing the full f3,2 string (which is -14).
WS3+4/Qcf3+4 – A homing mid from Raven’s CD game with some potential. Before ws3+4 was an excellent keepout tool. It was written off for being -14 on block so it’s utility went unnoticed. It had so much pushback that many chars struggled to punish it optimally and in some matchups it was 100% safe. However S3 has reduced its pushback, making it a bit risky now. But when blocked at tip range, ws3+4 still yields the same amount of pushback as before. On top of that ws3+4 now only gives a KND on CH. Lastly ws3+4 can now be cancelled into BT. This is pretty big as it means Raven can now enter BT as an option from her CD mixup and can also advance with her CD then smoothly transition into BT. Having an “advancing BT transition” is a nice compliment to qcf4 which was somewhat of a “retreating BT transition”. Also note that the ws3+4~B cancel into BT is a lot slower than the qcf3+4~B cancel. In fact standing up normally and manually entering BT yourself is faster than ws3+4~B. So it’s better to use the qcf3+4 version when you want to use the cancel.
db4 – This isn’t a bad low to make use of around the entry – intermediate level but it has too many weaknesses to be a key move. Whilst it deals good damage and is +4 on hit, leaving the opponent in a splits-stun which forces them to guess on a 50/50; its quite slow. Db4 is within the borderline of being seeable at i24. Despite being a sweep animation its also very vulnerable to stepping, has limited range and is also -14 on block. D4 outshines this move in almost every regard. So while you can get away with bullying opponents around the lower skill levels with db4, you’ll need to replace it completely with d4 against stronger opponents.
HAZ – The 2nd stance in Raven’s kit. It is however very limited and situational in its application, that it’s often ignored altogether. The main benefit of this stance is that its very evasive (possible to avoid almost all RA’s). Though it is not a mixup tool. It’s only useful for hard reads. The big idea is, if you think the opponent will try take their turn then after say jabs or df1 on block, you can enter HAZ to go underneath their attacks and whiff punish with HAZ 1 on a read. HAZ 3 is used for parry setups since it’s -9 on block and WS punish attempts will be get caught by BT f1+2 parry. Again another hard read setup. HAZ 2 and HAZ 4 are gimmicks. HAZ,U is a taunt but HAZ1+2 has some use as an oki tool, because its able to hit tech-rolls in both directions and also completely crushes springkicks. But overall the risk is too high for HAZ and there are safer ways to get equal or better reward.

Snapshot Mini-Guide by NanoHologuise
ThatBlastedSalami's Raven Breakdown I can no longer recommend this guide in good faith. It's not a bad guide but not only is it out of date, it also does not touch on important key tools and gives the wrong impression in some respects. There is no mention of Raven's BT b3+4 (the cornerstone of Raven's BT meta) and TBS pushes the idea that Raven's BT is a gamble. One would only think this if they're not aware of BT b3+4.

S3 Breakdown

Originally I planned to have this thread posted in tandem with an in-depth S3 video guide on Raven. This will be a series of videos, each episode taking a thorough look at different aspects of Raven. However it is taking a bit longer than expected to getting it all done and I don’t want to sit on all the valuable information in this post for too long. So in future I will post links to the series once complete and will also add them here. I have already completed the scripts for the 1st two parts, so if you do want to get an early look you can DM me. Just know that the series will cover:

Essential Viewing

The following is a list of essential viewing videos for Raven at a competitive level. These matches will give an idea of what high-level Raven play looks like, as well as examples of the different playstyles that focus on a particular aspect of Raven.

Special thanks to Paul_Mcshane for helping tweak and edit this piece to perfection. This format for the character discussion will help out people to learn about different characters much better than the past formats. Anyone who knows their character well enough, I encourage you all to take the time and contribute for the next one.
