Breaking New Ground #5 – 0105. Looking Out

It was an uncomfortable and quiet journey home. The YellowJacket officers seemed to resent transporting the newly freed, and the lack of tight control over his swinging was disconcerting to Alex. Alex had to assume it was also discomforting for his Dad because he couldn’t tell and communication between them was blocked. They were deposited back through the trapdoor in their leaf like two old bags of clothes thrown into an attic, and they deflated as such. It was dark, the ‘night’ Alex had spent in a cell had actually only been a couple of hours, and so he didn’t feel rested at all.
Alex wasn’t sure if his Dad knew about the second AirHead he’d found in the visitors house, or if he knew that he’d been allowed to keep it by the YellowJackets. It wasn’t unheard of for people to have 2 AirHeads, but it was rare. Alex didn’t even know if his Dad knew he had made it all the way to the empty house. Alex was sure though that his Dad wouldn’t know of the deal proposed to him by the Sheriff.
Alex didn’t know if he would help the Sheriff or not.
Confused in the face of too many unknowns to properly navigate a conversation, Alex took advantage of fatigued bodies, tired minds and a dark night, and unceremoniously slumped off to bed with his police issue holdall bag, trying to hold it innocuously so as to not betray the weight or shape of an extra AirHead. Let’s not start anything now, that’s tomorrow’s problem, he thought.
Collapsing onto his bed, a momentary thought shunts itself into his mind, concerned that this again could be a trick of the police, but he was too tired to care, and so pulled off his Airhead, socks and gloves, and slept.
Hammer-like banging and a low humming of machines aggressively coaxed Alex out of sleep. For a few seconds his mind refused to accept consciousness, hoping that sleep would win against the noise, but the noise persisted and Alex twisted onto his back accepting his fate by pulling on his AirHead. The morning’s noises are commonplace, often serving as Alex’s alarm clock, jolting him awake anytime between six and seven. They have the simultaneous effect of making Alex feel anxious, like surprising loud noises would, and calming him, as they’re caused by his Dad’s preparation before heading out to work, indicating to Alex that there’s an emptier house.
The AirHead scans his retina for a fraction of a second and loads up his LifeView, a customisable sandbox of different information panels, Alex was fairly minimalist in his approach, but did have his most important panels always open. However the first thing he noticed was a yellow and black checkered banner running across the top above all other panels, ‘Witness protocol in effect’ and a timer counting down from 120 hrs, including a circular yellow and black telephone icon with ‘Sheriff's Office’, next to it. Alex was hoping for a few minutes of normality before facing reality, but this forced him to remember yesterday’s interrogation and accept that he was being tracked.
On autopilot, Alex reviewed his messages (upwards of 12 unread), energy balance sheets, latest news (both political and entertainment), popular content trends and lastly his to-do lists both personal and school related. As though he’d been punched in the chest, Alex leapt upwards and landed on his bedroom floor! Of course, the application!
Banging his head against a wall of panic he rushed out of his bedroom still dressed in yesterday’s clothes and into a brightly lit family room. As though punishing him his AirHead took a few nano-seconds longer than it should have to dim the visor, forcing Alex to take the full morning glare of the powerful low rising sun. It was a Saturday, one of the last sunny days before the annual storm, so the windows were fully transparent to enjoy the last of the sun.
His visor, recognising his proximity to his Mum, overlaid her face onto the image of her AirHead, the fact that she was clearly engrossed in some reading didn’t matter to Alex, as he immediately interrupted her morning calm and coffee. Alex did, however, feel some latent guilt for the argument he’d had, not with her, but rather at his understanding of her, as he was being interrogated, and so began a little more contrite than usual.
“Mum, sorry, the pioneer’s programme application, I think the deadline was yesterday!”
With a look of concern, but certainly not matching Alex’s urgency, she replied:
“Can’t you send it anyway and just explain, maybe include the police arrest reference?”
This took Alex off guard. He realised he hadn’t spoken to anyone about his arrest, the interrogation had confused his memory of what he had or hadn’t said, and to whom. Taking a mental step back, Alex went and sat next to his Mum. Apologising to his Dad was easy, it was the only way to end the argument, to re-establish the hierarchy and take the, usually proverbial, lumps. Apologising to his Mum, because it was usually genuine, was harder.
Look, Mum, I know I shouldn’t have left last night; I needed to go and find out what was happening, I just...
Not yet turning to face him, still seemingly engrossed in reading, his Mum interrupted,
Did you find anything Alex?
“Well, I mean no, but what did you want me to do just sit around?!”
It wasn’t clear if his Mum’s impassive face was a setting selected from her PersPro or if she was genuinely dis-interested. Either way, it prompted Alex’s accusatory tone, in an attempt to get a reaction so that he could diagnose his Mum’s response to last night’s antics. This was met with a sigh and a tut, barely audible through his AirHead. She turned to Alex, with a look of only slight concern:
“I’m just glad you’re back now and okay, if your Dad wants to get messed up in things leave him to it”
Alex’s mind squirreled away the latter half of the sentence, ‘messed up in things’, he couldn’t give it any attention now.
Okay Mum, thanks”. Alex’s guilt prompted him to try and make it up to his Mum, by dropping their verbal ripostes, which was how the two usually communicated, and instead saying:
Do you mind giving me a hand with this application, if we can’t do it we’ll need to go into town, could have a scan around the shops whilst we’re there”.
Either recognising his efforts or simply being persuaded his Mum attested, and seemed to brighten up a little, though again, this could have been a PersPro setting, it was difficult to tell.
The pair worked on the application, pulling it up in a shared viewing window on their AirHeads; it was straightforward for the most part which compounded Alex’s guilt for not having done it sooner. It asked for the usual identity information and lots of personality type questions that his Mum kindly stayed quiet for as he made his choices, though he was sure she’d made a few comments under her breath with her commlink muted. He was sitting next to her after all, and the AirHeads couldn’t seal in every sound. The application didn’t request any lengthy personal or professional statements, instead requesting a link to his online portfolio (common place for all students to have their work accessible online). The remaining questions varied from logic puzzles to reasons for applying, and specifically requested quite short responses (as almost everything was completed via speech-to-text, the ancient convoluted language of forms, applications and legal documents had fallen out of fashion, as it takes too long to hear or speak).
The completion of the form was smooth and Alex was optimistic for his chances, until he was brought crashing back to earth upon submission. “Error, deadline elapsed”
Fuck” Alex punctuated. “Come on then let’s head into town
Sure, I need to grab some things for your Dad anyway
Alex quickly changed into a fresh flightsuit, and went to leave his room, before glancing back at the yellow and black holdall he’d been handed when released from the Sheriff’s. He zipped it open and took out the AirHead. Pausing for a minute to look back at his open door to hear for his Mum’s readiness, then quickly replaced his AirHead with the new one.
Entirely driven by the curiosity of his new toy, but justified by his wish not to be monitored, Alex left his familiar mottled brown and orange AirHead in the bag and donned this new one. It went unremarked upon by his Mum either from being unaware due to the superimposition of his face on her visor or because she was deliberately avoiding talking about it.
She activated their flight tether, a simple cable that linked their belts and an automatic override of his flight suit that mirrored her movements, so that they could travel together into town. It was a quick glide into the center of the tree, even with his Mum’s cautious flying, but it gave them enough time for some idle conversation, and Alex cautiously brought up the interrogation and the Sheriff’s request for information. Either diplomatically or simply disinterested, his Mum’s advice was to follow his own reasoning. He resolved to keep his eyes and ears open, but only reporting back to the Sheriff if he felt something was clearly warranted, as he wasn’t entirely convinced the Sheriff’s motives had his Dad’s interests at heart.
They touched down on the arrival plaza and Alex was released from the slightly embarrassingly adolescent tether. From the arrival plaza, a broad flat plain on which hundreds of people are landing and launching, they joined the spiraling travelator that moves them into the center of the circle and into the stem that joins the main trunk; like marbles circling a funnel and into a tube.
The commercial district encircles the tree and stretches up 30 or 40 floors and below even more. Security officers and workers flitted in flight between the floors as seen from the glass walkways and balconies, but they were the only people allowed to use flight suits inside the tree’s core, despite the general public being used to sheer drops and exposed heights and equipped with flight suits. Looking into the lateral distance from these balconies showed how massive the trunk of the tree was, only after kilometers of distance could the curve be noticed as the walkways bent into a tiny far off point.
From the roots of the tree an expansive delivery network twisted and curved beneath the surface of the tree’s trunk, branches, leaves and up to the highest seed pods, rarely visible except for their final delivery point in each leaf. Utility workers were the only class to enjoy these decorative veins of orange energy, bluegreen pulses of water and mist-white oxygen tubes mingled with webs of purple and silver service cables. Everybody else settled for a view of the mostly grey-black monochrome monolith built of steel and solar panels.
The shopping plaza was the exception. In contrast to the structure’s general aesthetic, a cacophony of visuals began as customers moved into the interior. The travelator made for a captive audience forced to hear advertisements for the outer ring’s exclusive establishments. Health spas, high cuisine restaurants and luxury shops lined the outermost rings, positioned closer to the landing plazas for a more convenient experience and endless views of the planet. The adverts also served to give a healthy dose of an inferiority complex for most viewers, now eager to prove themselves by overspending.
Skipping these exclusive concourses as most do, Alex and his Mum join the throngs of eager shoppers in the deeper concentric shopping rings. Layers of vibrant screens vie for attention in a gaudy assault of blues, pinks, yellows and reds; each screen is more invasive than the last as their attempts at getting you to look at them become more extreme, in both form and content. Vibrating and pulsating screens showcase new suit accessories on provocative models, other images jump from screen to screen to follow your gaze and force acknowledgement of the latest gendered fragrances. Overall it’s an assault of adverts and shop windows, flaunting so-called essential products, services and lifestyle choices available for high priced but assuredly good value expenditure of hard-earned energy. It was inebriating, and even the thriftiest fell prey and complied eventually.
If a shopper somehow resisted the temptation to stop and browse, or give up and go home, and ventured into deeper rings, the scene changed again into muted beige tones, as displays swapped adverts for directions and information about the surrounding offices, administration units and perfunctory hotels. This was Alex’s target, to pass through unscathed and out into the administration district for the first order of business, his application.
“It’s not far actually, but I think there’s a queue, says 30 min average time there” Alex said pulling up directions to and information about the application center. Anytime somebody referred to a disembodied ‘other’ with a verb, ‘says’, ‘sent’, ‘shows’ etc. it always referred to the AirHead’s interfacing with the information networks.
“Well, you head there then, I’ll get the other bits done” his Mum replied reasonably, though this did disappoint Alex, as he wanted to find out what she was doing, and what the errands were for his Dad. Unable to think of a reason to stick together, they separated and Alex linked his location beacon with his Mum, though this was not reciprocated.
Alex detoured through the entertainment district, his favourite. It was a silver lining to separating from his Mum as she always tried to steer him away from this plaza. Today though, Alex frustrated himself because he didn’t have time to take it all in and re-acquaint himself with the trends and fan favourites of VR games, experiential movies and holo-shows, glimpsing only the new releases. He needed to get this application off of his to-do list before he could allow himself any other distractions. That said, the advertising was pervasive, and Alex did glimpse something interesting.
The way shopping in the plaza worked was different to the old format of physically collecting items and then purchasing them. Instead as you browsed you would curate a digital shopping ‘collection’, pay through your AirHead and race your items back to your Leaf. It made it easier for transporting whilst flying, and also made every purchase feel like a present, as the act of paying and receiving were separated. You could even add to your collection directly from the ads jumping out at you, removing the need to visit the store at all, and even browse the digital store from elsewhere on the plaza, never missing an opportunity to scratch the itch of consumerism even if you resisted it in the store itself.
In fact, in extreme cases, ads would auto-add the product to your collection, so it wasn’t as simple as idly strolling through the vicinity of the stores, you needed to stay vigilant to what you were looking at and possibly even buying without knowing it. Though these items could be returned without cost and refunded straight away, it was just additional effort, for typically innocuous and inexpensive trinkets; they usually ended up in recycling tubes.
The interesting glimpse was the last shop Alex passed. Its windows were evangelising about a new entertainment product on the market. For someone that enjoyed staying up to date with technology, entertainment, and anything that proposed to blend the two, seeing a ‘brand new and innovative product’ on the market that he was unfamiliar with was unusual.
The shop was a pet store, or rather modelled as one, with all manner of animals flying, running, jumping and even swinging around behind the glass. Names were displayed on Alex’s AirHead as he synced with the store’s advertising. “A 100% unique and personal AirPet - always have your buddy at your side, as you look after them and watch them grow”, He heard and read through his AirHead. Having personal animals fell out of fashion before this planet was even discovered, but it seemed there was a market for them again, though sanitised into 1’s and 0’s. Alex opened up a peripheral window and did a quick search for the product, minimizing the window for later reading. He pressed on more quickly in the hope to return sooner.
Arriving at the Application Processing Center a strictly minimalist waiting room was full of people eagerly wanting to speak to a real person face to face who could help them navigate the twists and turns of society's labyrinthian bureaucracy. Alex wasn’t too frustrated with the process and his ticket was assigned to him as he entered the room which gave him priority over all those waiting online. Actually he was quite glad for a pause as it gave him an opportunity to read up on the ‘digital pets’.
Yet, he couldn’t focus. He re-read sentences, getting distracted half way through and not understanding what he’d just read.
The Sheriff’s questioning was on his mind, his and his Dad's arrest was on his mind, and the strange powers of this new AirHead were not only on his mind but constantly teasing him with its surreptitiously small sprouting plant pot icon. He could activate it now, see what it does...but decided against it. It was overwhelming enough in the dead of night in a quiet neighbourhood, he wasn't sure he'd cope in the middle of the day in a busy public space.
His visor interrupted his internal debate with a summon to one of the consultation rooms.
The application resubmission process was humiliating. After being chastised for missing the deadline in the first place, he was made to complete the entire thing again without reference to the application he’d submitted previously. Before accepting the application, the processor, with an almost digitally bland voice, asked pointed questions about his family and lineage. He was forced to accept the apparently inherent inferiority of natural, unaltered lineages, and verbalise the folly of attempting to be a coloniser. Finally, and flatly, the submission failed again, even with the processor’s enhanced permissions, due to ‘investigative authority restrictions’ which had paused any formal activity for Alex’s family, a.k.a a police block. A knot formed in Alex’s stomach, if he wanted to progress, he’d have to acquiesce to the Sheriff's request.
Leaving frustrated, with the application suspended in limbo, Alex was accosted by adverts, tailored to his current mood and was unable to resist the large round eyes of a puppy that bounded towards him as he entered back into the entertainment district. Impulsively and with that familiar cocktail of frivolity’s guilt and buyer’s gratification, he bought his pet which was immediately delivered virtually to his ‘AirHead Ecosystem’. He opened up the new ‘companion’ options of the AirHead immediately but was swamped by acknowledgements and conditions to read through and sign; he’d had enough of forms for today and ignored them feeling hollow as he couldn’t yet experience his indulgent purchase.
Dissatisfied with his retail therapy, Alex re-joined his Mum outside the AirHead store, a pilgrimage every shopper makes to see the latest unaffordable products in what resembles more like an art gallery than a shop.
The two had a brief and evasive catch up, Alex avoiding the truth about his blocked application, instead saying it was fine, and in return not probing too much about his Mum’s errand running, though he noticed she did look rather subdued or tired, indicating she’d gone quite a distance.
Typically, one joins the ‘audience’ for the daily unveiling of software updates and hardware tweaks, but Alex was no mere spectator today, instead having booked himself, or rather, his AirHead, in for a diagnostic.
Removing one’s AirHead in public was unheard of, so much so that shopping for new ones, trying them on or having them repaired was done within private changing rooms with only the technician present, if necessary. Without having it confiscated, suspecting it to be a specific class’ tool, Alex wanted to know more about the special features of his newfound AirHead. The technician placed the airhead on the diagnostic dummy head and immediately frowned, took it off again, excused himself and left the changing room with it. Alex felt alone, exposed and nervous. He felt cut off, naked and noticed how quiet the shop was without the distant ads playing through his AirHead.
A different technician returned, or possible the same person with a new AirHead returned, it was never possible to tell, and shoved the AirHead against Alex’s chest saying:
You shouldn’t bring this here, leave and be more careful; you’re lucky I was working today, the others wanted to report you”.
Bewildered and embarrassed, Alex wanted to argue back and ask why, but the man had meanouvered Alex back out into the promenade, making a scene as though he was throwing him out for being unruly.
As Alex put his AirHead back on, a line of text displayed from the stores’ general comms; “The edits made to your Airhead software represent more than amature customizing and won’t be tolerated at any official AirHead store. We thank you for your past custom, but will be unable to support this device henceforth”
A snap landed at the back of Alex’s head, and though not painful, did surprise him enough to cause a sharp flinch forward. The calling card of his mother’s frustration, followed by comment through gritted teeth:
“What on Earth? Stop it, Stop it now” as Alex gesticulated to the shop indignantly.
Mum no idea, I took my AirHead in for an upgrade and they threw me out!” Alex protested, though did in fact have some idea now he’d had a chance to think about it.
“You obviously said or did something Alex, they wouldn’t just throw out a paying customer. I don’t care what they did or you did, just calm down and let’s go”.
This triggered something in the back of Alex’s mind...something that he read in the statement as he was thrown from the store…‘not tolerated at any official store’, official’. Alex thought...what about an unofficial store then?
“Mum, I need to go to a repair shop before we go, I’ll meet you back at the landing plaza”
“What, we’re supposed to be heading back now”
“I’ll be quick sorry, you can hang on a minute or two”
“No Alex we need to get going” But Alex had already started to leave,
“I’ll catch you up”
Alex bolted off, colours blurring into rainbows as ads leaped out and tried to keep up with Alex’s pace, music and conversations from shops jumped out and instantly died in a regular beat as he passed entrances. Within the AirHead he pinpointed the district of independent market stalls and shops and pressed on at a near sprint. The excitement of potentially finding out more about this mysterious device gave Alex a short term distraction from his dilemma of personal progression vs. familial betrayal. Any attempt to think about it just devolved into a vague moral argument. For now, running towards a shop to tinker with his probably innocuous AirHead felt appropriate, more manageable.
Contrasting the vibrant tech district this promenade of sprawling market stalls and pop-up miscellaneous-junk sellers shops was much duller and dirtier visually; the colourful adverts and accompanying electronic music had gone instead replaced with numbers and statistics jumping out both on the visor and through the headphones; X kilograms of Y metal for Z energy credits, “We Buy Your Old Boost Boots!” and the like above every store and from all angles. There were also overlays on every product on display emphatically explaining that that product is the very best price you’ll find anywhere.
However, like elsewhere in the shopping district, it was overwhelming.
This volume of information was hindering Alex’s search for a low-key and morally ambiguous looking store with which he could discuss his Airhead. He was starting to panic knowing that his mum was waiting on him, and by extension, keeping his dad waiting. Compounding this time pressure was the increasingly dense stalls suffocating Alex’s movement as he struggled between stalls shoulder width apart.
A shimmering holo-cover caught Alex’s eye as it flickered against a nonexistent breeze beneath a sign ‘Bespoke Diagnostics’. It was a little on the nose, but Alex didn’t have time to keep searching, and it was the first one he’d seen that specified anything beyond simply buying, refurbishing and reselling.
Stepping over the threshold brought three thoughts screaming into Alex’s head. The first was the acknowledgement that this shop had an overwhelming smell of grease, sweat, fatty-foods and synth-smoke. The second was that he wasn’t sure who he expected to find and what he was going to ask them, and third, intrinsically linked to the first two, was how this was a big mistake and he didn’t want to be here.
The shop was a maze of machinery, metal sheets and wiring reels stacked from floor to ceiling. Navigating through the shop it gradually changed into a factory of some sort, though what it was producing was unclear, and Alex needed to squeeze chest to chest as customers and employees moved around, giving him nothing more than casual glances.
Alex wasn’t sure what he was looking for and whilst he wasn't consciously following his nose he did notice the dank musk’s intensity grew stronger as he moved deeper and towards what resembled an office. Pushing back the door, which took some effort as it was both un-powered and cluttered, revealed two men Alex would never forget. Well actually it revealed three men, but it tells you more about the other two that Alex didn’t even realise there was a third.
The first thing that struck Alex was that he could see their faces, unmediated, non-persproed faces; they weren’t wearing AirHeads at all and though there were two AirHeads on their desks, they looked like much older models. It made Alex feel uncomfortable that he was able to see their gaze as they casually but effectively surveyed him, not ending the conversation in progress with another patron, friend, employee (it was hard to tell which, possibly all three). Even with the translation and transcription options enabled Alex struggled to follow along as he waited nervously. They were speaking an odd mix of colloquial English, technical jargon and slang he didn’t know interspersed with in-jokes and references.
The larger of the two was leant back in what Alex assumed must have been a reinforced chair, reclining behind a large desk of papers, pens, odd bits of unfamiliar electronic parts and other curiosities. He winked at Alex in a disarmingly assertive manner, acknowledging his presence but making it clear he was presently occupied. He was dressed in a huge beige shirt and denim shorts that Alex could probably fit into just one leg of. He was bald, though so were most people above the age of 25 in a society that wore helmets for all but sleeping hours.
Being the interruption, Alex waited in the door frame for half a minute, surveilling the room. It was either very small or just felt that way from the overwhelming size of the other two men. Alex wondered how on earth they travelled around the tree, settling on the idea that they probably didn’t bother at all, corroborated by their lack of AirHeads and suits.
The smaller man, though ‘the slightly less massive’ was probably a better way to describe him, was as small in confidence as he was large in body. Squatting on a hovering office chair that was split apart at the seams like a ruptured sausage casing, his arms and legs tucked tightly into himself with his back arched over an access terminal; he looked like he was caught in a difficult cycle of trying to hide his massive self, and in failing to do so redoubles his efforts whilst self-consciously pulling his shirt away from his skin as though trying to get some extra breathing room or stop the shirt irritating his skin, or both.
Alex’s attention snapped back to the other one as he said; “Now fuck off”, and planted his tree trunk feet down on the floor, rose slowly to his full height of 7 foot 1 inch and gently slapped his customeemployee/friend on the back.
The behemoth loomed towards Alex and gestured towards the door as though they obviously needed to head through there, and it made Alex feel a bit stupid for not knowing that already.
“Nah then muck, what’s tha-fter?”
Confused, Alex began to mumble the words he’d prepared by way of an introduction, tripped over them as he spoke and instead heard himself asking what this place was, what work they did, why the man didn’t wear a helmet and what the issue was with his helmet all at the same time. It came out as a stuttering confused mess.
Unphased, perhaps because the sound hadn’t yet travelled up to him, the goliath replied:
Orate ahkid, names Mark” he said extending a huge hand
Alex”, was all that could be mustered in reply, noting the surprisingly soft grip of the handshake. It seemed he was being ushered on a tour, but how this man was going to navigate the narrow corridors of his own wares Alex couldn’t tell.
Either making an effort to use words Alex knew or Alex was starting to decipher the language, Alex heard: “Tha buyin or selling like?” as he stooped beneath a doorway opposite the office. Alex began to follow until he realised it was the toilets, then waited by the door, feeling like a puppy following its owner, and embarrassed about it.
Say again?” Mark said raising his voice from the toilets, prompting Alex to continue talking, as though this was a natural way to do business. Alex found his sense when remembering that his mum was waiting for him.
“My AirHead, I was hoping somebody could take a look at it, it’s malfunctioning”.
Aye, tha’s berra off
Alex paused, unsure what next.
Returning from the toilets and wiping his hands across his chest leaving a wet hand smudge.
Gis it then, dunt tek two head like it i’nt Jamie’s missus”.
Having taken off his helmet already today, something never normally done twice in a day, Alex felt strange being asked to take it off again, and hesitated. Mark didn’t push the subject, but simply went back into the office and collapsed into the chair which, miraculously, supported his weight, his head lolled back against the indecipherable wall sized display screen behind him and he seemed to drop off to sleep.
All this took about 10 seconds, before Alex even managed to reply. So to hurry things along, and not sure what else to do, he took off his helmet. Alex felt the same feelings as 15 minutes earlier, but continued and placed the AirHead in front of Mark who lifted it without opening his eyes. He didn’t try to put it on, instead looked it over, peered through the neck opening and onto the visor, probed with a couple of tools instruments from his drawers, asked a few questions to his colleague (who Alex learned was the aforementioned Jamie).
He threw it back to Alex.
Nowt up wi’it, int yours though like, am pals wi chap who’it is. But nine tenths init. Did rate comin’ ere’ kid, be a rate faff at a proper store. Calm down it’s still rate, not dodge or owt, just ‘ad a tinker. T’be ‘onest only good Air’ed is a stripped un but these ‘acked uns are orate number twos, just lets thi sideload thi’own software
Bewildered by what he was hearing, and how it was being said, all Alex could manage in reply was “Surely that’s illegal?”
Mark let out a chuckle that shaked his whole body much like a baby’s first laugh that causes them to fall backwards. “Fuckin’ rate, they bloody wish. Keep to thi sen yeah cos if they catch wind it’ll change. Called ‘the right to repair’, a sacred n ‘allowed law” Mark mimicked a catholic cross gesture “‘ant gone away, big corps don’t like it, repairing code means you need to be able to add your own dunnit?, and it’s in this blurry line that these helmets operate”
Alex was following along, and getting excited by what he was hearing, “So it’s fine as it is then, it just allows for some extra code?”
“Aye kid, but bloke who ‘ad tha before thi is sharp like. Probably quite a few tweaks like” Mark answered, punctuated by another wink.
Emboldened Alex said: “Yeah the x-ray vision” but immediately regretted divulging the information, he didn’t have evidence Mark knew the owner.
“Int x-ray, but ah, there’s more am sure like just fiddle around wi’ it.”
Alex was relieved that he wasn’t carrying some hugely illegal target on his head, but did want to be told more about what he could do with the AirHead, ‘fiddle’ with it felt a little anticlimactic.
Whose is this, are they going to come after it?
Fuck do ah look like John Soothsayer?” followed by another chuckle, “Doubt it like kid, he’ll ‘a’ fucked off some-wier, yours nah”
Noticing Mark avoided Alex’s first half of the question, Alex dipped his toe in the water again.
Whose is it then?”
“Carlos Maddox”
How irritating. The question was answered but Alex was none the wiser. Doubling up the irritation, Alex’s mum called through and was swiftly muted, and all calls momentarily blocked to pre-empt her next attempts.
Continuing Alex seemed to begin to adopt the hyper-local language: “Who’s that like”
“Tha what? He’s a bloke like, fuck knows how do you answer that like?
Fair enough, Alex thought. “Well, why’s he made this then”
“Ah rate well yeah that’s the question init? Energy, credits, moolah, cash dosh and dollars. Call it thi likes, s’exchange that matters, ‘ow it moves not each stack. Don’t get me wrong like, tha nos? A rack of energy cells at ‘ome makes for an easy life like, but a yung’un like thee wants to make ruffle some feathers. You get this tha’s a smart lad.
Alex didn’t ‘get this’. At all. But Mark continued.
“Brokerage, taxation, finders fees, all that. Trim a li’l bit off of everything, nobody notices a slither, nobody cares, in fact they want it, makes them feel they’ve earned it. That’s w’ere real money is now. But dunt’ matter really does it, gonna be dead and buried in a bit. Knowing where and how the energy flows, that’s where power lies.”
In a move that didn’t seem as crass as it should have been, Mark opened up a lock box case of energy cells and the orange glow lit his half of the room. From the size of the case alone, assuming it was full, there was at least a year’s worth of his Dad’s wages in there.
So ‘ere i’ve got a stack right, wat does it tell thi eh?”
Alex shrugged.
“Thas rate ah-kid dunt tell thi owt. ‘Ow it got ‘ere, what am gonna do wi it, weer it’s guin, that's power. This ere” he tapped Alex’s airhead, still on his desk “shows you all that like, bloke that made it wa’ fuckin’ nuts, but sharp like, a talent. It’s not xray, it’s the flow of energy, society's structure itself.”
Taking it in, Alex looked down at the AirHead. It looked the same, but he was now much more excited about it. Happy to have an attentive audience, Mark continued.
“Though let mi tell thi ‘bout this stack ‘ere. People luv antiques right, and I’ve got racks and racks o’ metal boxes, so I laser engrave some old earth logos on em, kick them around the yard for a bit to rough em up, and flog em for a bit of cash like”
A man with an AirHead fashioned like a bulldog, with a short stature and gruff bullet point talking style that was emphasised with coughs and throat clears interrupted Mark’s unpunctuated legato. Whilst Mark was occupied, the ball of flesh and dust for hair known as Jamie scoffed and swizzled round in his chair.
“And what, pray tell, doth thou intend with such a device good sir? It sounds useful perchance for one akin to accounting at a grand scale, something perhaps beyond one’s capacity if one may be so bold. Anti-tech luddites know not the usefulness of the latest gadgets and gizmos, buying into conspiratorial nonsense rather. I for one would don my AirHead were permission granted”
Though he knew the words, their use was far more confusing than Mark’s jury-rigged language. This childlike attempt at sounding important and educated whilst at the same time desperate to either differentiate himself from Mark or mock him, made Alex dislike Jamie. The hate didn’t fester too long when on cue, from the depths of the factory’s labyrinth, Mark’s voice carried into the office.
“Don’t listen to that fat lazy fuck, he’s too busy funnelling his wages into Sorcers and Sock Lovers Online or whatever its called. Fire up your AirHead and see how much he throws into that nonsense like”.
This made Alex jerk forward with a laugh, but stifled it so as to not offend the dislikeable but still giant colleague of Mark’s. The man Alex was with simply rolled his eyes and shrugged it off, pulled his t-shirt away from his chest and continued his work.
As a respect for Mark’s conventions Alex pulled on his AirHead only once he was out of the factory. Alex logged into the sprouting plant pot icon but this time didn’t accidentally enable the ‘x-ray’ mode, (though he needed a new name for it now), so as to not overwhelm himself.
Instead, he took a look around the interface more calmly than when he first looked, though this lasted for all of 5 seconds, before the missed call notification leaped into view. He’d been talking to Mark for much too long, and his mother’s patience had evaporated.
Immediately his heart rate leaped and he broke into a run. He was automatically aided by the new features of the AirHead which guided him with optimum routes through ever changing levels of pedestrian density and timing of elevators and travel-ators, showing his path via a ghostly outline of the visitor, now known as Carlos. He was weaving through the levels and making great time but would still be very late and no doubt incur a bit of wrath, hopefully from just his mum, but quite possible from his father too.
The AirHead prompted a new message in a thin grey text that Alex hadn’t seen before. ‘Elevated heart-rate noticed, ‘Danger Sense’ enabled’.

2020.09.26 19:32 ExposePghMen First Date(or any date) Precautions

Always take a screenshot of person and their dating app that you have plans of going on date with ASAP! They tend to unmatch you after they get your number.
Refrain from giving out your real number to people you have not met yet. Get a text free app or google voice number and use that for your dating apps instead.
Refrain from giving out personal information like your full name to people you barely know.
Google Search their telephone number. Also use Mr. Number App to read reviews about them from people who have come in contact with them.
Have a background check app or website subscription like People Finders to look up their telephone number, name, email address, etc.
Look up their criminal background on PaE Dockets App.
Look at their social media accounts prior to date.
Never let them get you an Uber or Lyft on their account. Even if they insist. Order it on your account and ask them to compensate you instead.
Never let them pick you up or drop you off. Always have your own transportation.
Take a picture of their license plate while arriving on date and look it up online afterwards.
Have a picture of them just in case.
Carry pepper spray with you at all times.
Let at least one trusted friend know where you are going, who you are going with, and what your date’s information is.
Don’t leave drink unattended then go to use restroom.
Try to use restroom before food and drinks arrive. And after you are done eating and drinking.
After date is paid for and you have said goodnight, excuse yourself to go use the restroom. Stay in there for at least 15 minutes to make sure date has drove off. If they insist of walking you to your car, simply say that’s unnecessary. Just in case they follow you to your car or follow you home.
Have the app Noonlight!!
Add any precautions you have in the comment section!

2020.09.10 15:51 Makegooduseof My 10(ish) days of non-professional, home iPad-only life

I dropped off my MacBook for a battery replacement, and due to parts shipping and whatnot, I was Mac-less for almost two weeks. I figured I would take that time to see what an iPad-only life would be like.
For context, I have a conventional five-day workweek, and I do not bring work home. Any computing done at home is for entertainment or personal education needs and wants.
I thought a bit about how to organize my thoughts, and in the end, decided to have sections dedicated to different categories of apps and activities. Since I leave my work at home, there is a greater focus on entertainment, which comprises of gaming and media consumption. Another common theme in my impressions will be how I have been able to consume my own offline content. I am not subscribed to anything at the moment, but I do have a standing trial offer for Apple TV+ (which I should probably activate soon).

External hardware

My oft-used accessories with my MacBook:
My iPad gear:
Compatible accessories:
HyperDrive compatibility: partial and it needs to be powered.
What works:
What doesn’t work: HDMI out. I connected the other side to a 720p Samsung TV, but there was no signal whatsoever. This might be a USB-A limitation, so no fault on the hardware.
Unknown: DisplayPort, because I don’t have a DP-capable monitor, but I’m willing to bet that it won’t work since HDMI won’t work.
Overall, as far as hardware is concerned, the iPad is great for the lowest common denominator. Anything that is not part of the “standard” - that is, the extra button or two on a midrange mouse, the software macro keys on an extended keyboard, etc. - is likely not to be recognized and will be a waste. I imagine Apple-branded devices may be the exception.

Productivity and/or studies

One of my favorite features here is how, app dependent, keyboard shortcuts pop up when you hold the Command key for a few seconds. This is quite handy when you would rather not have to remove your hands in the middle of typing something. It was also nice to see that a lot of shortcuts have remained the same on iOS apps.
But on the topic of keyboard shortcuts, I miss being able to create or modify them for each app. For example, on Evernote for Mac, Command-T triggers a new tab, but I had no use for that function, so I remapped it to strikethrough.
Keyboard observations aside and going back to the iPad, I’ve come to fully realize that an iPad Air is way too small for split screen if you use the Apple Pencil to scribble notes. Half an iPad Air’s screen is roughly equivalent to an A6 sheet, and for me personally, that isn’t big enough to scribble lecture notes down.
This will be highly dependent on the nature of whatever class you’re taking, but the roundabout that worked for me was to use my iPhone to stream the lecture material, while using my iPad to scribble away. The visual wasn’t anything “intense,” like an instructor using a blackboard - rather, it was the equivalent of a fancy PowerPoint presentation with an audio overlay, so this roundabout did not bother me that much. YMMV.

Entertainment - audio

When the iPad has not been synced with a computer running iTunes, or if there is no active subscription to Apple Music, Spotify or any other music streaming service, the iPad is a very poor jukebox out of the box. And in the case of the iPad Air, the speakers on the single side do not help matters. I imagine my experience would have been better had I opted for the iPad Pro, or waited for the (expected) Air 4th generation.
Without any third-party apps, you can use Files to individually tap on a song and listen to it until it’s over, and then you’ll need to manually tap on another song to get it playing. It probably goes without saying that there aren’t any extra features you’d usually expect from a music app like EQ, playlists, and all that. Not great for listening to most music, but good enough for podcasts or recordings of spoken material. And Files will play music in the background.
Foobar2000, VOX, VLC: Cannot access local drives from within the app, but I’ve noticed that you can force audio to play via these apps by tap-holding on at least VLC; a list of random audio and video files pop up.
NPlayer, Flacbox, Evermusic, Wave : So, these can access the external drive. The biggest thing to note here is that the music will not play straight from the hard drive; you need to import the files to the iPad’s internal storage. There’s also no way to one-tap-add folders if you decide to copy over everything.
That said, I did notice a common pattern with these four apps above. They all use the Files interface to access the drives, and this made me wonder whether it’s an iOS limitation that the developers have no way getting around.
Now...buying music from a store that isn’t iTunes is another can of worms. I came across a game soundtrack I really liked on BandCamp and bought it. The buying process was fine; it’s like buying something from Amazon. Actually consuming the music? Hahahahahaha.
This is BandCamp-specific. If you’re using Safari, the website doesn’t let you download the music directly. Instead, you have to download BandCamp’s app, make an account and stream it that way. The other alternative is to use a browser that allows you to change the user agent (once again, iCab comes to rescue here), change the user agent to something like Safari Mac or any other Mac/PC-based user agent and then get the straight download link. From there, you unzip the album, and start listening.
But here’s the kicker: you cannot add these songs into your stock music app. Unless you migrate your entire collection to one of the third-party apps listed above or an NAS, your music collection is fragmented.
This has made me seriously consider giving up the usage of iTunes on my Mac or any other future computer going forward. On the one hand, it’s great that I can make all the Smart Playlists I want with all kinds of conditions, and they are seamlessly synced with my iPhone. I haven’t jumped on the streaming subscription bandwagon because I’m happy with my collection, and there’s plenty of music that I can never remember everything. On the other hand, all that is useless when I don’t have a Mac or PC at hand. I’ve been reliant on using Smart Playlists to automatically rotate through my collection by using play counts and dates last played, but again, what good is all this without a conventional computer?

Entertainment - video

With video, things are much more like what you’d expect from a Mac or Windows system. You tap on a video file in Files, and depending on the file type, either play it directly, or open up another app. MP4 files will open directly in Files, and MKV won’t.
For MKV, I use Infuse. It supports built-in subtitles, enabling or disabling them, as well as multiple audio tracks. If I were to be nitpicky, the only extra feature I’d want is the ability to add multiple files simultaneously to a playlist...but I’m starting to notice a pattern here in conjunction with the music apps.
As for online videos, it is very disappointing that Safari does not allow users to disable Fullscreen Video API on iOS 13. In other words, you don’t get the built-in play/pause and 15-second back/forward controls anymore unless a website allows it. This indeed makes fast-forwarding and rewinding much more of a chore, and on some poorly designed webpages, those buttons are tiny. And to add insult to injury, I can’t use the arrow keys on my Combo Touch keyboard to fast-forward or rewind, either.
One of the solutions found online is to use a Shortcut to force a video to show those controls in full-screen. For me, I have a second browser (iCab), with its user agent set to iPhone, and by doing this, I get the older, more usable controls. This is pretty much my video browser. The downside of iCab is that ad blocking has to be done in-app, and I’m still working on getting all ads blocked; some still get past.
Once again, though, if you had to jump through hoops to download and listen to music, well, these hoops become rings of fire and the platforms are narrower with spikes on both sides when it comes to downloading most videos. Short of being given a straight-up .mp4 link, it’s just plain impossible to download videos, regardless of legitimacy (unless it’s from Amazon or iTunes). And good luck ripping that DVD or Blu-Ray you bought off the shelves.

Entertainment - reading

I’m sure this has been mentioned a lot already, but thanks to the versatility of orientations, the iPad is definitely the superior reading experience compared to a Mac. Sure, if you have the right monitor, you can rotate it 90 degrees and read there, but you can’t just pick up a monitor from the desk and bring it to your sofa or bed.
Chunky is a great CBCBZ-supporting app, with support for right-to-left and left-to-right reading as well as auto-double-page when reading in landscape mode. It also can access files locally, but the file has to be copied over into the app.

Gaming

I’ve touched on the SN30PRO+ controller earlier above. I imagine that it will be easier to pair a DualShock 4 or XBox controller since Apple openly supports those, and the extra gaming features coming in iOS 14 will only enhance the experience further.
As for the actual games, this one is going to be the most subjective of them all, and I also imagine the least fleshed out in my post since I do not subscribe to Apple Arcade or any other game streaming service.
As most enthusiast users may know, for almost as long as iOS has publicly existed, gaming has been a source of much controversy and discussion, what with predatory micro-transactions to Fortnite/Epic. There is also the issue of whether iOS can ever be a “true” gaming platform because of the App Store economics and the prevalent notion that mobile apps are not “real” apps.
In my case, I very much doubt I will treat my iPad as my **primary** gaming machine by any stretch. I still like my Marios, Zeldas, Resident Evils and Halos, and while there are quite a number of games that started off as console or PC games on the iPad now, of which I dare say a fair number has been ported efficiently (Sega AGES, Star Wars KOTOR, Marathon trilogy, Castlevania SOTN, Final Fantasy 1-7 come to mind), I feel that overall, they aren’t exactly the gaming experiences I get from my Switch. I don’t say this purely out of merely looking at the App Store offerings; I have spent at LEAST a couple hundred dollars on premium, single-payment games or games with episodic content as IAP since the release of iOS 4, so I have at least SOME personal experience to go by.
Furthermore, retro enthusiasts will be the most hamstrung when using an iPad. Apple won’t allow emulators on the App Store, so you’ll need to go the builds.io route or re-sideload emulators from a Mac or PC every week. Or jailbreak.
Having said all that, I’m quite sure that for others with different gaming tastes, gaming on the iPad will be the smallest of issues. More than anything else, taste is truly subjective.

Life management

This is my catch-all term for things like managing personal photos, scheduling appointments, to-do lists, grocery lists, etc. Overall, I see general parity between iOS and desktops, and iOS would have the edge if portability is important.
Photos: since I pay 99 cents for more iCloud space, and I’ve backed up my photos to iCloud besides my external hard drive, photo management is pretty straightforward. I don’t have much to say here.
Appointments and errands: Shortly after dropping off my MacBook, I downloaded Agenda for making shopping lists and keeping track of appointments. I found that the combination of notes and to-do lists makes it more convenient to have dates and details in one place; it’s as if the stock Notes app had Reminder features. That said, there’s also a Mac version that I’ll give a shot at once I get my MacBook back.
Date tracker: Besides life-related milestones and anniversaries, we all have a lot of non-holiday, arbitrary dates to keep track of, such as date of purchase for tracking warranties, or the last time you cleaned out the cat litter box. I’ve always used spreadsheets for long-term things like warranties, and for more frequent things like the aforementioned kitty litter, an app called “Days Ago” on my iPhone, which seems to be unavailable for purchase anymore.
I find that after some initial setup by establishing that a column will be nothing but dates, Numbers can be surprisingly easy to use for this. When not using a physical keyboard, you can tap an empty cell, and in the pop-up keyboard, there’s a big fat button that says “today.”
Journaling: I have a grandfathered account on Day One after they went subscription-only. There doesn’t seem to be any major difference between the Mac and iOS versions.

File management

This is where I see the most glaring of issues. Files being a poor substitute for FindeExplorer is a given and plenty has been said about this, so I’ll skip it.
Firstly, there is no option of safe removal of external drives. On my Mac, when I disconnect the hard drive without a second thought, it takes a good while for it to be mounted again, and sometimes I need to go to Disk Utility to bring it back. I notice this on my iPad as well, but there isn’t an option to unmount a drive first before physically removing it from my hub.
Secondly, say goodbye to local iPad backups. It’s iCloud backup or no backup, and it ain’t no Time Machine (as Apple points out here). There’s no concept of system images like Time Machine, and if you’ve held off on app updates because the new updates take away features or make extreme changes, well, that’s out of your hands.
That might be fine just for the iPad, but what about your external drive with your documents and stuff? The only roundabout I see to this if you’re going iPad-only is to purchase a NAS and set up Backblaze or another backup service that way..and I’m not sure whether a NAS is a mainstream-friendly option yet.

Final thoughts

Using the iPad, I came to realize that what constitutes "mainstream tech" has changed. When external hard drives became regular stock at everyday retailers like Target, Wal-Mart or their equivalents in other parts of the world, and not just tech specialty shops, I thought that was the point when Macs and PCs truly became mainstream, household items.
Now, it's online and the cloud. iOS devices are closely tied with iCloud. Android devices make it easy to upload files to Google Drive. Microsoft provides one-touch access to OneDrive when you install Windows. Dropbox provides an online, platform-agnostic intangible flash drive. You don’t have to buy boxed software and CDs that often, but you go to the App Store or the developer’s store page and download the software and provided codes that way.
So the answer to Apple's question of "what is a computer?" is "the gateway to the cloud." Whether the content is yours or not, they are now in the cloud, and you use the iPhone, the iPad and the Apple Watch to bring everything to your fingertips. This is Apple’s vision of a computer: a smarter terminal to the digital world.
If you’re like me and coming from years, if not a couple decades of desktop OS paradigms, there’s a big question of “how much of these so-called inconveniences are the iPad’s fault, and how much of them are because I’m inflexible and too set in my ways?” Maybe I’m just too set in my ways and not open to change...or maybe the iOS paradigm is just not right in more than one way.
As I adjusted and/or came up with workarounds, I am reminded of one of Buddhism’s tenets: desire leads to suffering. My desire to approach the iPad with OS X in mind has led to “suffering” (I use that term as an analogy; I would not say that I suffered any kind of mental anguish or anything like that during the past two weeks). Probably the most stress-free way to enjoy an iPad is to adhere to Apple’s dogma, embrace iCloud fully, do away with dongles and enjoy your services (Apple Music or Spotify, etc. for music, Apple TV or Netflix, etc. for shows, whatever).
For me personally, unless there are other OS changes in the pipeline, I feel I will always have some kind of a conventional personal computer, be it a Mac or something running Windows, in my digital life. My digital life collection is something I cannot easily give up, at least not yet.
To finish this off, if you’re one of those people who have fully ditched your older computer and transitioned to iOS-only with next to no issues, more power to you, and I mean that with absolute sincerity. You have an all-in-one device with unparalleled manufacturer support, battery life, portability and (model-dependent) wireless connectivity.
tl;dr: iOS is not optimal for managing offline, local files.

2020.08.20 05:03 broccolinislippers Strange Memorial by JNFather Doesn't Stop Siblings from Bonding

(TW:child abuse, in original post) Original post here: https://www.reddit.com/JUSTNOFAMILY/comments/i9i1ps/exhausted_is_the_kitten_worth_it/
When I described what happened to one of my close friends, she said the memorial sounds like an episode of "Black Mirror." It's just so odd and surreal. This is really long... maybe most of you won't read it and that's ok, but I need to tell the story to process it.
TLDR: update that we definitely are not getting the kitten from my dad and will have to wait and see on the adoption websites if he shows up. Surreal memorial that was not even about my mother, but about "Jesus" and my dad. It was basically like an "intervention" and the preachers definitely treated us like they had been told we were Satan's spawn. My dad put up a bunch of pictures in a display and conveniently did not display any but one that had me in them. My dad denied my moms wishes and got her ashes interred at a place we don't have any details about, when she wanted her ashes spread in a beautiful and/or meaningful place. My dad basically didn't talk to anyone but church people, did not see me or any of my mom's family before the service, and left immediately. He switched hotels last minute after embarrassing me and my husband by calling our (at the time mutual) hotel four times in the same night because he did not believe me that they agreed to have my mom's kitten in the room (that we were originally supposed to adopt while there). Despite all this, a good thing happened for my siblings and I, who got to spend time together and talk about my mom, and all of our spouses get along swimmingly.

My mother passed away on July 30th. She was a religious person, specifically catering to my fathers preference of very extreme, conservative, fundamental Baptist (Christian). For those of you in the US, the Southern Baptist Convention is too "liberal" for my father. My mom was only 52 and very healthy and died of an aggressive colon cancer, diagnosed a year ago. Her doctors said it would take her in 8 weeks without treatment, and since she got treatment at one of the best cancer centers in the world, she was able to get a whole year instead. Toward the end, she was suffering, and my father frequently refused medications prescribed by her physician teams, including her oncologists and palliative care doctors and nurses. He, despite my pleading, also refused pain medication while she was suffering dying, not because it was against our religion, but because "she doesn't need pain medicine, she isn't in pain she is just uncomfortable." She couldn't speak for herself, and I was pleading with him over the phone from states away because I was sick at my own home with COVID-19. I work in Critical Care and although I was trying to tell him the medication would help her be more comfortable, he was screaming at me not to "diagnose over the phone." He told me she was uncomfortable because she was sitting on her backside too much and she needed to be able to get up more and walk around, not pain medication. He was in complete denial of everything, would not get help for himself or my mother, would not make the house more accessible for her, and got offended at my asking for pain medication and cut off all contact with me except through my sister, who witnessed my moms pain in person and reported back concerned asking me what she can do, which was nothing. He was in control and my dying suffering mom had no one who could help her because of him. (part of this was in original post; sorry for repeating but I just want to re-emphasize how awful this is and how it made everyone, especially mom, feel).
I talked originally about mom's sweet kitten, and how my father will take him to the pound in September rather than giving him to us to adopt because he is "messy". I took y'alls advice and contacted the shelter in question via email, and pulled up their adoption policies so I am ready to adopt if he shows up there. No one got back to me yet, but they also use PetFinder online to post their pets for rehoming, so hopefully I will be able to see him on there if he does. My dad didn't mention anything about the kitten when I saw him, so I definitely won't be getting it from him. Thank you for your advice.
For the memorial, my dad had everyone drive/fly to South Carolina, 5.5 hrs drive from where he lived with her in Florida, to be at the last church they were members of (for only about a year, year and a half). Ok, this makes sense, sort-of. I'm not sure why they didn't ask a preacher who knew her better, but ok. What doesn't make sense, is that mom had said she wished to be cremated and specifically said to me "do not put me in the ground" and "do not come visit me or anything, I think that is weird" and then Dad went and had her ashes interred at a national cemetery in Florida. She had said to spread her ashes someplace meaningful or beautiful. I wanted to take them to the Grand Canyon, where my dad's favorite pic of her was taken, and where decades before that they took their honeymoon. Whatever. So instead of having the service there where he is putting the ashes, which is the city some of my BIL's family lives and much shorter drive for sister and her toddler (5 hours less), very close for my dad's mother, and close to my mom's home, everyone had to go to another state for this church? He also did not tell anyone he was doing this with the ashes or ask any opinions about it, or disclose the location to anyone. Hopefully he will give us this information later?
During the memorial, my dad also only talked about my mom in relation to Jesus. Her obituary said absolutely nothing about what a sweet and friendly person my mom was, how talented she was, how she was caring and giving and funny, etc, it just mentioned that she was a committed follower of Christ, wife to my dad, mother to me and my siblings. Ok, maybe it was to keep it to the point. But then, at the memorial, only the same theme was present. He gave a speech about her relationship with God throughout her life. He didn't say anything personal about her except the date they met and that he knew he needed to marry her because of a "voice in his head." He talked about her wanting only to make sure others came to Christ and would tell everyone she knew about The Lord. My mother wasn't a missionary or preacher... yes she was devoted in her beliefs and her faith, she told others frequently after her diagnosis that "God is in control" and she was not worried about what would happen to her because God had a plan. She didn't, however, try to convert anyone, do door to door witnessing, try to get any family members or friends go to church except my sister, try to explain how to be "saved" to anyone. She was a good person and faithful, but he made it sound like she was traveling the world converting everyone she met to Jesus, and did nothing else of value. He didn't mention any of her family outside of him and his children or any remorse that any other family would miss her or the time she spent with them. There was not any discussion or opening for anyone else to say anything nice or share memories about my mom either, only discussion of how she loved Jesus and she wanted everyone to come to Jesus. The preacher gave a long speech about how they weren't sad because they would all see Mom again in heaven while they are worshipping God, and everyone should be "saved." He went through explanations about how doing good deeds or going to church isn't enough, how the only way to get to heaven is their specific way, etc etc, you're all going to hell, blah blah... while we are trying to mourn and remember my mom. They said come talk to us later so we can make sure you know where you're going when you die. All the weird church people who didn't even know my mom came by to give a stern look and say "I'm praying for you" and it seemed that no one there even really knew my mom except two of her coworkers from many states away who had come to her memorial. (They actually talked with me a little about the best things about being around my mom and how she lifted up those around her.) It seemed like most people there had definitely been told that this was some kind of intervention for me and my siblings and extended family who weren't in their "cult". I don't mean to offend anyone who is religious- my whole family is Christian, some baptist/protestant, some Catholic. This was not just religious, it was aggressive and surreal that this service about my mom said nothing about her.
The display with all the pictures had couples pictures and family pictures, but I was in none of them but one, from when I was 4 years old (I am 32 now). The reason my dad gave was he wanted "more recent pictures" that "people would be recognizable in." I don't think anyone could recognize me at 4... he took pictures as a hobby and was constantly shooting photos growing up, and we took studio family photos every year. He had plenty "more recognizable" ones from when I was 17 or 18 before I left home. My brother and sister were featured in the display as 8 and 10 year olds, so they were recognizable then but somehow I am not? This was the first thing my family members noticed when they walked in, they would tell me later. It was so surreal... it was like I didn't exist, I didn't matter, my feelings didn't matter, my relationship with my mom didn't matter... all that mattered was my dad and Jesus. I had to sit there when I wanted to be remembering and honoring my mom and get talked down to by the preacher who had obviously been told by my dad, given the way he greeted me before his speech, that I'm some kind of heathen. Ironically, not to toot my horn or try to compete or anything like that, but just how nonsensical it all is, I did lots of witnessing and converting when I was a child and teenager. I was fully brainwashed and just trying anything really to get accepted by my abusive dad, who didn't even notice this or care. I did door-to-door witnessing, I took people to church, I led youth bible studies and participated in campus ministries. I reached out to many, many more people than my mother ever did, and yet all that was valid about her was her witness for Christ? That doesn't even make sense. She was a wonderful wife- she was eternally patient with him even though he is absolutely maddening... he couldn't even find his keys without her. She was creative, an amazing cook and baker, artistic, funny, nice to everyone she met, quirky, hardworking... she was loved by all her coworkers and a good boss when she managed people... so many wonderful things about her and he only wants to talk about her religion and kind of embellish it? I was so upset by all this. And he won't even talk to me.
I wanted to see if maybe I could talk to my dad since he had been shutting me out or texting me and taking it the wrong way but not allowing me to call. My dad kicked us out about ten minutes after the service because he needed to clean up his display and the church people needed to go. He had barely spoken to me except to mumble a "thanks for coming" and he continued to deflect me. He said he would not be hugging anyone or shaking hands due to the virus, but he hugged the preacher and random church people from a church he hasn't attended in over 8 mos and only attended for a year prior? He had long conversations with random nice people who were just making nice people small talk and didn't know him or my mom at all (evident by the types of questions they were asking), but I couldn't talk to him? The preachers and some of the church people weren't even in masks, and he was afraid to talk to us because he is at risk because he's had pneumonia before, but they don't pose a risk? We were definitely too infected for him to touch or talk to from traveling and having gotten COVID and gotten better, even with masks on and a few feet apart, but the church people don't even need a mask and he can hug them? It was all so weird and contradictory. My dad had also switched his hotel the day before to not be in the same one we were in-- the one he had called four times while he berated me and accused me of lying and being irresponsible via text message because I had asked them to let us have my mom's kitten we were supposed to adopt from him, and he didn't believe me that they were going to allow it. So we stayed in the hotel despite the embarrassment, so as not to make waves, but we find out he switched his hotel and won't talk to anyone before the service. He wouldn't talk to me during or after the service either. I invited him back to the hotel lobby where my mom's family was going to gather, and he said maybe but most likely no because he needed to preserve my moms funeral flowers right away. He texted later he wouldn't be coming. He didn't say he loved us, or tell everyone sorry I can't make it, or safe travels, or anything else. Whatever.
On the plus side, I was able to have family to our room because we got a room with a living room attached to it, and I asked everyone to go around the room and say what their favorite thing about my mother was. A lot of wonderful memories were shared (spoiler: none of them were about Jesus). After my aunt, uncle, and grandma went to the airport, my siblings and I and our spouses all had dinner and hung out in the hotel room after. Fortunately and unfortunately, we had all gotten COVID and recovered from it, so we didn't have to worry as much about pandemic precautions. We all expressed that the whole situation was super weird and I got overflowing support from both my siblings and extended family that they love and care about me, and did not understand or agree with how my father has treated me throughout my life or recently, or how terrible he was to me about my mom's treatment and the whole kitten situation. My siblings and I have gotten close as adults despite my parents at times trying to actively pit us against one another, especially my dad with his abusive treatment of me and excusing my sister from all wrongdoing and spoiling her. We had a great time spending time together and sharing memories about my mom, and we made plans to get together as soon as we can when the pandemic has cooled down. Over all, I have come to the conclusion that we all just have to remember and honor her in our own way, and that we have to make our own family now the way that WE want to love each other and WE want to treat each other. My dad can choose to be a part of that or not, but coming to us and being involved is going to be on HIM, not us, and especially not me. It's sad, but my mom was kind of in the position of spreading my dad's negativity and hate around, and with her gone, he doesn't have as much influence and the cloud has kind of been lifted in a way. We decided as the kids that we want to have a close, loving family, and he can do what he wants but that doesn't have to concern us.
I guess I don't really have any advice to ask, but if anyone has any, feel free to share. I also had a few AITA moments because my dad gaslights me and I can never tell if what he is saying/doing is intentionally hurtful/spiteful or just because of his (undiagnosed) mental condition which everyone thinks must be some form of autism. I don't want to be overly judgmental of what a grieving person does, and I can't imagine what he is going through. They were married 31 years. But I am not the asshole. I have done what I can. I'm not even sure I want any apologies from him... the last ones were more or less a trick to get what he wanted, so I don't think I could trust it.

2020.08.12 20:12 curiousrambutan I’m 35, married, with $300K HHI and lives in SF

Assets and Liabilities
Our retirement balance is from 13 years of 401(k) and Roth IRA when we qualified- contributions plus the general growth in stock market.
My family gave me $160,000 total over a few years which I’ve used for wedding and parts of a down payment and tuition. My parents believe in helping kids “get started” if they are able, which they were, and so they did.
We bought a tiny condo in SF a few years ago and I’ve kept the home value about the same as our purchase price. With Covid, maybe the value has dropped? I don’t want to think about it.
We built 90% of our net worth after we got married, finances combined.
Income
Our combined salary is $315,000 (roughly 60/40 me/husband), plus $40,000-$50,000 in RSUs a year. We both work in tech. Our total take-home is pay split across multiple joint and separate accounts - I actually don’t really know how much it is. 🙈 I calculate our two big expenditures: housing and retirement, as a % of gross salary as a guideline (18 and 21 respectively). We share our condo with a roommate who pays $1,950 a month.
Regular deductions Aside from FICA and state taxes, our biggest deductions are retirement accounts. We max out 401(k) at $19,500. This year I have access to an after-tax 401(k) with in-plan conversion, and I’m saving $25,000 in that. Our employers pay for our health insurance premiums.
Monthly expenses = ~$7,500
Pre-Covid, our travel expenses were higher but food expenses were lower because I was more motivated to save money for travel.
What We Spent Last Week
I’ll focus mostly on spending activities but also include instances that prompt me to think about finances.
Saturday: 4:00am: 🐶🤒 Wake up to the sound of our dog vomiting. Husband spends next 4 hours cleaning after repeated bouts of doggo GI distress while I sleep. I call urgent care at 8am
10:00am: 🥖☕️ Lattes and scones at hipster cafe while we wait for urgent care. Dog throws up for the 8th time. $24
11:45am: 🏥 Exam and diagnostics at urgent care. An hour later, labs come back - inconclusive, except “it’s not pancreatitis!” They prescribe a bland diet and monitoring. $463
4:00pm: 🍰🍓 Pick up cake and strawberries. My soul is soothed. $30
8:00pm: 📺 Netflix and chill for the rest of the evening. I try to remember what we did on Saturday nights Before Coronavirus, and realized with a start that I can’t remember at all. 😭
Total: $517
Sunday: 10:00am: 🥑 🍳 Avocado toast topped with sautéed bell peppers an over-easy egg. I think avocado toast is the highest ROI home cooking: little effort, big reward.
12:00pm: 🧺 I vacuum, laundry, steam mops while husband goes for a run. 🏃 Would vacuuming will be more fun with a Dyson?
2:30pm: 🐶 Grab some pet supplies. $14
3:00pm: 🦐 Pick up prawn chips from a local market during a walk by Golden Gate Park. SF. $11
6:00pm: 🥡 Chinese takeout before a quiet night in. #cantstopwontstop comfort eating... $36
9:00pm: 🔥Goes down reddit rabbit hole reading about FIRE while Husband works. Can we FIRE in SF without the startup lotto or making VP at big tech?
Total: $61
Monday: 6:00am: 💩💩💩 I clean up after dog before hopping on the laptop.
12:00pm: 🌯 Lunch from my favorite burrito place. $16
4:00pm:🍷 Coworker mentions he bought a second house in wine country. No, green’s not a great color on me.
7:00pm: 😡🤔 Downstairs neighbors are having a party - in the middle of a pandemic. I love many things about our condo but I’m ready for a single family home.
8:00pm: 💕 I call Mom. I fill her in on dog’s medical travails and my terrible diet. She tells me to stop worrying so much and to eat whatever I want. I mention I want a Dyson and she suggest I get a Roomba instead.
Total: $16
Tuesday: 7:00am: 🇬🇧 🇫🇷 🇩🇪 Meeting with the European team. We talk about our governments’ responses to Covid and upcoming vacation plans. Not mine, because I’m too risk-averse. Is it even worth spending $$$ at a hotel if I have to bring my own pillowcases and sheets?!
5:00pm: 👩‍💻Wrap up work for the day. I like my job and team and I’m very grateful for that. If work is always this great, I won’t feel (too) bad I can’t FIRE.
8:00pm: 🍨 Facebook ad tells me I get $10 off for a 3-flavor bundle of specialty ice cream: lychee, matcha, and black sesame. I crave, therefore I cave. $35
10:00pm: 🏡 My friend texts me a picture of the house she’s bidding on. She says she feels poor in the Bay Area. Haha she makes more than I do, but I get it. Swim in your own lane, I tell myself.
Total: $35
Wednesday: 7:00am: 🐶🤢 Find a small pile of vomit on the carpet. Again!!! More cleaning before work.
2:00pm: 🏥 Take doggo to her regular vet for follow-up exam, labs, and flea and tick medication (that cost $90!?!?? Next time I’m trying the online pharmacy). They give me a fecal sample cup so we can do a stool test. $197
6:00pm: 💉 I put in a request to city services to remove a syringe needle on the sidewalk. There are joys of living in SF and there are “joys.” This is the latter.
7:00pm: 🥡 Husband and I talk about finances over takeout. As CFO of the joint enterprise known as our marriage, I update him on our retirement and cash balances. We decide we’ll put focus on increasing our cash cushion instead of extra mortgage payments. $50
9:00pm: Roomie plays with dog in kitchen while I look up dog foods. Is a $4 can that much better than a $2 can?
Total: $242
Thursday: 8:00am 💩 Doggo does the deed. I drop off the fresh sample to the hospital so they can check for parasites. $73
1:00pm: 🐶 Pick up food for the dog. $16
2:00pm 🛒 Our afternoon Costco date. Pre-pandemic, we love going to Costco. Now, my motto is “get in and get the F out.” I normally order delivery but Husband really misses going to stores in person. We get groceries - eggs, bell peppers, ground beef, milk, a ton of snacks - plus 3 boxes of surgical masks. $156
8:00pm: 🔩Ikea furniture assembly. We realize we’ll need stud finders and leveler - orders some from Amazon. $30
9:00pm: 💕 Catch up with mom. When I was growing up, she was fairly doom and gloom about money (or the lack there of). I internalized a fair bit of anxiety. Now she tells me to enjoy life, think of happy things, and don’t work so hard.
Total: $276
Friday: 8:00am: 🏨 I call our lodge at the Grand Canyon and cancel our reservation for September. I booked this trip a year ago but I’d don’t feel safe enough to fly. We’ll get a full refund.
4:00pm: 🏥Back to the vet hospital, this time for a nail trim. I tried to cut the dog’s nails at home - an experience that traumatized us both. The vet gives me her stool sample results: she has a low level of a common bug. The vet recommends we monitor for a few more days. $25
4:30pm: 🌮 Pick up a taco on the way home because I’m feeling snack-y. $8
7:30pm: 🍗 Go back and forth on takeout. Decision fatigue is real but sometimes it saves money. We put frozen chicken tenders in the oven.
9:00pm: We watch Netflix before bed.
Total: $33
Total for the week: $1,149, of which 64% is for dog’s medical expenses.
Reflection: This has been an extremely expensive week due to the dog’s illness. She’s an older dog we adopted with the thought of giving her a good retirement life. I knew there would be some medical expenses. But I didn’t quite expect how quickly costs accumulate even for what turned out to be a non-critical illness.
I’ve also started reading a little more about the FIRE movement. I love a solid health insurance plan so I don’t see myself voluntarily leaving that setup. But having the financial independence to not have to work sounds pretty sweet.

Hunting in California 102: Draws, Deer, & Dove. Bonus of How to Find a Hunting Buddy

Thread theme.

Hunting 101--click here for the basics on getting started in California.

Preface & Author's Notes:

Hopefully you read Hunting 101 and found it useful. There was a ton of good stuff people added in the comments as well so make sure to go back and read them. I'll be updating and modifying the original OP to add stuff. Unfortunately, the post is something like 399xx characters already and Reddit has a 40K limit.
The goal is to post roughly a section per week. These aren't exactly short and take a few days to write/edit. While they're hardly complete, I do want it to contain enough information and resources where it's useful to new hunters. I don't expect to be helping experts by any stretch (I'm no expert myself) so some of this stuff may be generalized. That being said I do need help from someone who can send me some info on pig hunting. I've hunted most species in California and I know pig hunting is popular and lots of people have questions about it; however, pigs are extirpated from San Diego and the only pig hunting I've done is on a ranch in Texas using thermals... which is not legal at all in this state. So if you can do a quick write-up and send me some good info, that would be great. I can edit it and get it into the format I'm rolling with throughout. Also if someone can provide some suggestions on getting started with air rifles that would be great (u/errorseven pointed out I forgot about airguns which is admittedly because I don't know much about them).
I should add there is a natural bias toward hunting in Southern California just due to the fact I'm writing what I know and not what I've heard at the campfire. If people from elsewhere in the state have region-specific advice I would really appreciate it if you added it in the comments. After all, we're fortunate enough to live in a state where one can surf, snowboard and hit sand dunes all within 2 hours of each other.
The next section will cover elk, coyote, rabbit, and quail. Anyone who has gone elk hunting knows it's very similar to deer hunting so that section will be mostly about the differences instead of a full write-up.

Part 5: Getting the Dream Tag and General Draw Strategies

If you need a quick background on tags please read 'Hunting 101: Part 2: Tags, Stamps, and Points. Oh my!'
To start: each person has a different view toward hunting and you need to determine which view you hold. Most new hunters have a "meat in the freezer" attitude whereas people who have been hunting for a while tend to be more in favor of pursuing the trophy animal. What does this really mean? The longer you hunt the more likely you are to pass on the young 2x1 buck (if you don't know what that means quite yet don't worry) and wait for chance of the mythical old 5x5 to come walking up. That is not to say every hunter fits this stereotype or that one view is any better or worse than the other. It's just a generalization. That being said, your attitude will affect your draw strategy. I'll explain more below. Just keep it in the back of your mind for now.

Deer Tags

Deer Tag Types - Premium, Restricted and Unrestricted. What it all means:
Deer tags in California come in three flavors:
1. Premium - These tags are allocated via lottery. The state determines premium deer tags based on whether the quota of tags was met on or before the first business day following 7/1. In short: if the tag sold out before the draw it's a premium tag the next year. You are limited to one premium tag per year and it must be your "1st Deer Tag" (I'll explain this later). The vast majority of "good" tags are premium tags.
2. Restricted - These tags are tags which didn't sell out by 7/1 but sold out by 8/1. This year there were no restricted tags. These tags are first-come, first-served and take the place of a "1st Deer Tag" if you buy one as a "1st choice" on your "1st tag". If you didn't draw on your premium hunt entry (or entered preference point only), you're permitted to pick up a restricted tag as a second tag. It's a bit weird. For now, think of "restricted tags" as premium tags with 100% draw odds.
3. Unrestricted - These tags are tags which didn't sell out by the first business day after August 1st. These can be either first or second tags. They're sold on a first-come, first-served basis and can be either a 1st or 2nd tag--or both.
Deer tags: 1st vs 2nd Explained:
When you go to enter the lottery or purchase your deer tags you've got the option of two deer tags. The first tag costs $33.48 and the second is $41.86. The tags are not created equal as weird as it may sound.
1st Deer tag - Think of this as your lottery tag. It's generally a bad strategy to buy an unrestricted tag with your first choice on your 1st deer tag because you're just giving up (potential) points or better tags. You're only allowed to enter a single draw each season. This draw must be on the 1st deer tag.
2nd Deer tag - Treat this as an actual secondary "OTC" tag. If you hunt archery, the AO is your new best friend. Once you buy your second tag, the tag is yours. There is no waiting. If you enter the big game draw in April with a 1st tag premium entry and a 2nd tag unrestricted, the unrestricted tag will actually be mailed to you a month+ before you find out if you drew your first tag.
Deer Seasons: General, Archery, Muzzleloading Rifle and Muzzleloading Rifle/Archery
I'll keep this short.
General - One can hunt with rifle, shotgun, archery equipment, muzzleloading rifle, or crossbow.
Archery - One can hunt with archery equipment only. Crossbows aren't archery in California.
Muzzleloading Rifle - One can hunt with blackpowder muzzleloading rifles.
Muzzleloading Rifle / Archery - I'm sure you'll be shocked to know you can hunt with either muzzloaders or archery equipment.
Deer Tags - which tag(s) do I enter for?
FIRST DETERMINE YOUR ZONE FROM THIS MAP
This is a very difficult question to answer; however, I will hopefully give you enough info here to make an informed choice. The following factors are going to influence your decision making a lot.
1 - Do you live in an unrestricted zone? If so, go with a premium draw on the first tag and grab your local tag for your second if you want to try and harvest two deer, otherwise make your 2nd/3rd choice the unrestricted tag.
2 - Do you want meat in the freezer or a trophy? If you want a trophy, the above D-16 tag is probably not for you.
3 - Archery, rifle or Muzzle-loader? Hunting archery opens up a lot (learn to love the AO) and some muzzle loader hunts in premium zones are easier to draw than equivalent rifle hunts.
4 - Do you want to travel and can you afford the time off? If not, don't buy a tag that's 12 hours away (i.e. X3b for San Diego).
Lets give an example of draw strategy: Lets suppose you're a San Diego hunter who prefers to hunt locally for meat-in-the-freezer during deer season because you go trophy hunting out of state. You usually buy two deer tags because you enjoy doubling your disappointment. The tags for San Diego (using our handy map as a reference) are D16 (general, antlered), A-22 (either-sex archery split-season), G-13 (general, antlerless) AO (archery only, antlered), and M-6 (either-sex muzzleloader).
Lets break down these tags a bit further.
Tag Hunt Type Tag Type Number of Tags Season Dates Draw Odds (zero points) Hunter Success**** 4+ point bucks
D-16 General, antlered Unrestricted 3,000 9/5-9/27 (archery) & 10/24-11/22 (general) OTC / 100% 11.9% 7.3%
A-22 Archery, either-sex Premium 1,000 9/5-10/18 & 11/21-12/31 UNKNOWN** (turned out to be 100%) 5.4% 10%, does are half the harvest as well
M-6 Muzzleloader, either sex Premium 80 12/19 - 12/31 89% (2019), 75% (2018) 5% (2019), 8% (2018) 0%
G-13 General, antlerless Premium 300 10/24 - 11/15 <7% (2019) 17% (2019) 0%
AO Statewide archery, antlered Unrestricted unlimited Same as D-16 for San Diego OTC / 100% 10% (statewide) 18.1%
** This was the first year A-22 was premium. Last year it was restricted if I remember correctly
*** I ended up using goHUNT to do draw odds rather than calculate it from the state's data here except for G-13
**** Hunter success estimates from the state assume some who didn't return tags harvested. Take that for what you will.
Side note: The reason it's antlered/antlerless is that very, very rarely Does will grow antlers. Kind of a fun fact for the campfire.
First thing to check is the season dates. Are you going to be able to hunt those dates? If not, don't bother applying for the tag. Easy enough, right? In this case, for our totally-made-up hunter, he's hunting in Arizona during general rifle in part of October and November, but is otherwise going to be able to hunt most seasons.
Second thing: meat or trophy? If trophy is the goal there's little incentive to enter G-13 as it's antlerless and most people don't taxidermy a doe. There's also an argument to be made that the A-22--despite the longer season--isn't worth entering as a premium draw when our hunter can just grab a D-16 or AO tag so he can harvest two bucks (theoretically). That being said, we can see from the table above, trophy bucks are very rare in San Diego. At the same time, we see that "meat in the freezer" happens to only 10.6% of hunters in D-16 (I excluded AO from this because it's impossible to calculate as it's a statewide tag).
Third thing: equipment type. Our hunter prefers archery hunting but does rifle hunt. Therefore, the A-22 with the longer season is a good choice. Because the D-16 tag overlaps with the same archery dates as AO, but allows for rifle-hunting, it would make sense to choose D-16 over AO for our hunter as it opens up rifle hunting if he so chooses and he won't be hunting deer outside of the D-16 zone this year in California.
Lets go ahead and come up with a draw strategy for this hunter. Since the hunter just wants to put meat on the table, the highest probability of success is the G-13 tag at 17%. However, the odds of drawing one is under 7%, which isn't great for a tag with a harvest rate of only 17%. Therefore, it's best to look at the other tags. We see the next most successful tags are D-16 and A-22. A-22 is a premium tag and D-16 is an unrestricted tag. Therefore, on our application we put for our first tag A-22 and for the second tag a D-16.
Now when you go to choose your 1st deer tag it asks you for three choices. These are your first, second, and third choices. For the above, if we want to try and harvest two deer, we can put AO as the second choice. This way if we don't draw A-22 we can still get an AO tag and we still get a preference point for not drawing A-22. Preference points are awarded for not drawing your 1st choice on your 1st tag.
But wait, is that really the optimal draw strategy for San Diego?
No. The better strategy would be:
1st Tag
2nd Tag - D-16
If you don't get drawn on G-13 (which you probably won't), you'll be awarded a preference point and entered into the second round drawing on A-22. Since A-22 didn't end up selling out this would have been a 100% draw meaning you'd get the A-22, but also the bonus point for not drawing G-13. However, if you didn't get the A-22, you would then get your 3rd choice: AO. The flip side is you could also sub a D-16 for the A-22 and, assuming D-16 doesn't sell out, you could have two D-16 tags. If it does sell out, you'd get the AO tag with your first and the D-16 with the second.
Confused yet? Sorry... I'm doing my best here.
How else does choice affect things? Lets say you live in Redding and you're a rifle-only hunter. You want to hunt the area within a half day's drive. This opens up A, B, C and X-zones (plus the D3-5 which is actually a single tag)--lucky you. As a general rule of thumb bound to offend people, X > C > B > A > D(3-5) when you factor harvest rates, trophy size, and percentage of accessible public land... But that's only a general rule so take it for what it is.
Therefore, for your 1st deer tag you may want to do the following draw strategy:
1st choice: X-9(a)
2nd choice: C (C zone is one tag for the confused D-zone hunters)
3rd choice: B, A, D(3-5) tag (or any "guaranteed" draw)
Why? It enters you into drawing X-9(a) which has a ~1% draw chance on a 0 preference point entry. Assuming you don't draw this tag, it enters you into the second round drawing for C and you're awarded a preference point for not drawing your 1st choice on your 1st tag. C zone has 100% draw rate for first choice applicants. The remaining tags are then pooled into a drawing for the 2nd choice applicants. The draw rate for the 2nd choice varies from 15-40% depending on the year, but is usually around 25%. Not the best odds and this strategy is entirely subjective and that's sort of the point. Do what makes sense for you.
For your 2nd deer tag buy a B, A or D3-5 tag or any unrestricted tag assuming you want to try and harvest two deer. Easy enough?
Disclaimer: If unrestricted tags sell out before the big game draw, using them as the 2nd or 3rd choice on your first tag can leave you SOL. It's why it's usually better to get something like the D-16 (that could potentially sell out) on your second tag rather than risk losing it.
Author's Note: This section took a long time to write because I couldn't figure out a way to explain it without making it super confusing. If it's still confusing please let me know so I can try and fix it. The goal is to make this as approachable as possible. I re-wrote this several times and I'm still not happy with it.

Species other than deer (i.e. elk, antelope and sheep)

This is a little more straightforward. When you enter these drawings you only have to select your hunt. Is there some strategy that can be applied here? Yes-ish. However, drawing without points is still unlikely. There are some draws where people without preference points have the same odds as those who have them. All hunts where "Preference Point Tag Quota" is 0 and there is a Random Tag Quota means that all who enter are treated equally.
Elk - Drawing elk without points is pretty unlikely. There are 281 elk tags available in the general draw and there were 30,361 applicants this year--not counting preference point only; however, you can increase your odds a few ways.
There is some good news for aspiring elk hunters. The state added several new elk hunts this year and the herd populations appear to be healthy and growing at better-than-expected rates. More tags should be available in future years. So just keep trying.
Antelope - Strategies here are pretty much the same as elk. Case in point: 765 (Zone 6 archery) has 1.2% draw odds vs .1% for the equivalent rifle tag. This is another example of where there is only one tag available to those without points (the 765 tag that is).
Bighorn Sheep - Same as above. There are 7 "random tags" and 19 "preference point tags" for the entire state. That's 26 tags and 11,627 applicants (not counting 5,641 preference point applicants). Your best odds are Zone 8 and we're still talking .15%. Also keep in mind the "best odds" zone changes most years as people will apply for what they think they'll win.
So... should I just apply for preference point only? If you can afford the tag, the time off to hunt/scout, and are willing to put in the work the answer is a hard no. Any chance is better than no chance. I know someone who drew a Arizona Mule Deer "strip" tag as a non-resident with 1 point. For reference, the odds of drawing that are less than a zone 8 sheep tag here in California. Everyone knows someone who drew a dream tag with few/no points.
You keep talking about out-of-state hunting... should I get points out-of-state too? Yes. Again, if you can afford to do it you should do it. For reference, I've got preference points for sheep and elk in California, Arizona, and Nevada, antelope in Nevada and California, and bison in Arizona at this point. I drew my Arizona and California mule deer tags this year so my only mule deer preference points are in Nevada at the moment. If you live in Southern California those states are good options for out-of-state hunts since they're easily drive-able.

Part 6: Deer Hunting

What do I need?
When is the draw?
The deer draw is part of the general big game draw. This runs from April to June. If you missed the draw--don't panic. There are still tags available. Don't forget your zones either.
What are the season dates?
They vary throughout the state. Check the zone map for yours.
What is the difference between antlered, antlerless and either-sex?
What kind of deer are there in California?
We have Columbian black-tailed deer and various subspecies of mule deer. This map shows the distributions as well as the mule deer subspecies.
When do you start deer hunting?
Frankly, you don't stop. If you're out for spring turkey keep an eye out for tracks. If you go out coyote hunting in January you should be doing the same. The more you know and the more time you spend scouting, the more successful you'll be. Everyone knows someone who knows someone who doesn't scout and still manages to punch his tag every opening day. People also win the PowerBall lottery. Doesn't mean I'm going to buy a ticket and quit my job. Hunting takes work.
If you're just a "casual" deer hunter (and there's no shame in that) a good time to start scouting and placing cameras is 3 months before the opener if you're not running cameras or scouting year-round. It's just a good rule of thumb to follow but is far from a hard and fast rule and the more time you give yourself the more successful you'll be.
Where do I place my game cameras?
This question varies a lot due to a number of factors. The biggest being the kind of environment in which you're hunting and how good your cameras are. If you've got a camera that reliably detects movement at 80 feet, you can afford to place them at wider choke points than someone running cameras which are blind past 40 feet. Make sense?
So here's a few rules of thumb when placing trail cameras:
How often should I check my cameras?
Assuming you're not running fancy LTE cameras just check your cameras every 3 weeks. That is unless you have reason to believe your SD card will be full or your batteries will die (this shouldn't happen though).
What if I see nothing on my cameras?
If you see nothing and don't see any fresh sign, move the camera. If you see absolutely nothing (not just a lack of deer), it would be smart to make sure your camera is actually working.
How do I 'scout'?
This really isn't as difficult as it sounds. In short, look for an area on OnX you think has deer and go check it out. Your best option is to arrive at mid-day the first time. WAIT WHAT? WHAT IS THIS HERESY? If you've never been there before you don't know the terrain at all. What you see on OnX or Google Maps can be incredibly deceptive. Especially in Southern California where brush can make entire areas inaccessible that otherwise look great from satellites. Arriving at dawn and just hoping to see deer is optimistic at best. You need to answer the following questions:
All of these questions are far easier to answer after the sun has come up. For your first trip just go during the day. Also add extra time for getting in and out. What may appear to be an hour long hike may turn into three. Be prepared. Have water and a snack.
Once you've determined a spot you want to hunt, it's a good idea to place cameras and then spend the next two weekends scouting other locations. When you come back to check your cameras after three weeks--and you're doing a spot-and-stalk hunt--it's a good idea to get there at sunrise and start glassing from the spots you think are good to glass from. Look for fresh tracks each time you come back. Don't be afraid to move your cameras either.
What areas should I look for?
This list is endless but a few quick ones are:
How do I glass?
Glassing isn't as difficult as some people think, but it's also not as easy as sitting and just looking through a pair of binoculars.
Pro tip: If you have a laser range finder, you can use it to get the distance to the deer and then use OnX's line distance tool to get a pretty precise marking on where the deer is on your GPS. This is especially useful on a bedded deer you're stalking during archery season.
This video by goHUNT is pretty good on how to glass and worth watching. Better than reading my wall of text anyway.
How do I stalk a deer?
Oh boy. This is a tough one. First and foremost, be patient. Be very, very patient. Then be even more patient. Assuming you're watching the deer through a spotting scope or pair of binoculars, try and wait to see if the deer is going to bed. If it's mid-morning you've got a decent chance of this happening. A bedded deer is going to be easier to stalk than a mobile one.
Basic stalking goes like this:
One more thing: don't get too upset about a blown stalk. No one bats 1.000 when stalking deer. It's just impossible.
When are deer most active and what about the moon?
Deer are most active around dawn/dusk and tend to bed down when it starts getting hot. That doesn't mean to stop hunting in the middle of the day. Keep glassing. Just understand you're less likely to see them moving. As for the moon, when there is a full moon, deer tend to be more active at night than during the day. That doesn't mean you're not going to find deer during the day. It's just worth mentioning.
What about scent control?
Scent control is a hotly debated topic among hunters. My personal feelings are you should minimize your scent, but the extreme measures some take are unnecessary. The most important scent control is the wind. Don't be upwind of a deer you're trying to stalk. That being said, use scent-free detergent on your hunting clothes, scent-free deodorant, and scent-free body wash / shampoo and you're good to go. You can give your gear a spray down with a scent eliminator if you want. Some people will claim that this is actually extreme. Personally, I think it's all pretty easy to do and it doesn't really hurt anything. How helpful it is though can be debated.
Where do I shoot a deer?
First: Don't take a headshot. No offense: you're just not that good. No one is. You'll end up missing or wounding the deer. This site has the best infographics on where to aim, although it's specific to archery. You can shoot a deer straight-on with a rifle, but you risk ruining a lot of meat if you're shooting a rifle with some power to it. In short: aim for the heart and lungs.
What do I do when I harvest a deer?
First, take your pictures. Try and avoid a lot of blood in pictures. You're bound to share these eventually with non-hunters and blood makes many people uncomfortable. Be considerate.
Once you've got your pictures tag your animal. Wondering how? Check out this video made by CDFW.
If you're close to home and just going to drag the deer out, you don't have to field dress it; however, it's still a good idea to gut your deer. Wondering how? MeatEater's Steven Rinella has a great how-to video. If you're in the backcountry and need to quarter your deer, there's another MeatEater video which covers it, albeit briefly. There's dozens of other YouTube videos as well.
It's important that you get your tag counter-signed as soon as you leave the field. This is a requirement and not a big deal. It can be a bit intimidating the first time, but plenty of people are authorized and most of them are going to be giving you a high-five and not a hard time.
Don't forget: within 30 days you need to report your harvest but you should just do it when you get home.
Finally, post your picture to Californiahunting so we can give you some well-earned upvotes.
What if I didn't harvest a deer?
First off, know that you're not alone. Most hunters are unsuccessful when deer hunting in this state. Just get started planning and scouting for next year. Make sure you report that you didn't harvest a deer no later than 1/31, but it's smartest to do it the day the season closes so you don't forget. You can do this online. It's super easy. There's no excuse and it's really helpful to Fish and Wildlife--and therefore helpful to other hunters. Be a good citizen.

Part 7: Dove Hunting

What do I need?
What are the season dates?
bigdistance1 has a neat google doc of the seasons. There's also the DFW site.
This year the dates are 9/1-9/15 and 11/14 - 12/28.
Please note that there is a no-limit open season on Eurasian Collared-doves.
What are the bag limits?
15, up to 10 of which may be white-winged doves for Mourning Dove and White-winged doves as well as a possession limit of 3x the daily limit. No daily bag or possession limit on Spotted Dove, Ringed Turtle Dove, or Eurasian Collared-dove.
How do I know which dove I shot?
This nice little doc from DFW makes it easy. Download it to your phone for reference. There's no shame in making sure you're doing it right.
How do I scout for dove or where do I go for dove?
Dove are present throughout the state. The best places tend to be the edges of agricultural fields. The best time to scout good dove fields is when you're scouting for deer or rabbit hunting. You'll see dove pretty much everywhere starting around June/July. Just start taking note.
When looking on the edges of fields, look for perching/roosting/resting (not sure the right word) sites. These should be trees with few leaves or visual obstructions for the birds, but enough cover for some shade for the birds. Also look around power lines but don't shoot a power line. That will not end well for anyone. Seriously. Don't do it.
Doves follow a flight pattern. If you watch where they fly in and out of fields from you'll know where to set up. Gaps in tree cover are pretty commonly the flight paths so start there.
Water is another good option. If you've got a water source near a field, and the field is overrun with hunters, go set up by the water source.
The best dove hunting in California is arguably Imperial County. The state maintains fields for this that are open to hunting.
Important tips
What do I with a harvested dove?
This is a good video. Breast it and throw it on ice.

Bonus: How to Find a Hunting Buddy (or Buddies).

There are a lot of hunting clubs that offer the opportunity to network with other hunters. Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, National Wild Turkey Federation, and Backcountry Hunters & Anglers are some of the larger ones. There are also smaller ones like California Varmint Callers which despite the rather dated website still has very active regional clubs.
Other options include joining your local Rod & Gun and asking around. Or just posting here on /Californiahunting. Someone should just make an hunter4hunter or something at this point.
Also if you're a member of a club that's open to new members just comment below for some free advertising.

Conclusion / Final Thoughts

Why did you write all this shit?
Hunting is an important tradition and lots of people who didn't grow up hunting are starting to get into it but are completely lost. Unfortunately, hunting is a hobby with a steep learning curve that can be downright daunting just to get started with. I'm a selfish person. The more people hunting, well, the better for everyone, myself included. I don't want this state to keep doing shit like banning bobcat hunting for no reason. The more hunters, the more voters, and the better our chances of preserving the tradition are and opening up more public land to recreation.
I noticed a mistake!
Great! Comment below and I'll fix it. We're all human and I don't pretend to be infallible.
Can I get a tl;dr?
If you need a tl;dr, sorry. Hunting isn't for you.

2020.07.27 15:31 ThrowRA13540 Ex, pretended to have a serious illness to stalk me online. Help

Backstory/InfoMe, 21m. 20 at time of breakup. Has bad Illness called CF amoung other things.Ex, 20. 19 at time of breakup. Has Bipolar amoung other mental health thingsUKusernames/names will be made upI broke up with my ex around 1 year ago in late summer 2019. I wasn't able to care for my own health problems which are quite serious and I mostly wheelchair bound.
Part 1: Later in the day after breaking up, she joined my CF related discord with the name Cherrypie for my CF read everything I had said about her to my friends whilst venting. she then left before i had the chance to ban her, and then wrote a long post on the CF subreddit trying to cause drama. I sent her one text asking her to never join either again, with definitive proof and she denied it.
I thought it was over. It was infact not over
Part 2: 5 months ago a new member joined the discord called Batgirl12, they said they had CF, and was 22. I saw nothing wrong and carried on. She would often pop in when I had serious issues needing advice, or was venting to the other CFers amoung revealing very personal things.
Yesterday we were talking about getting tattoos, and transplants. she (my ex) chimed in with what she had gotten, one of which is a very unique tattoo in a unique place to cover scars. after this i was extremely suspicious so i started searching through the discord logs (I am an admin), and search with discords built in finder to see messages Batgirl12 had sent. The more i read I realized it had been her catfishing? me. I checked back to when Cherrypie had first joined by searching the date, and the bot, and low and behold it now showed the name Batgirl12.She was in my private discord listening, and replying to me talk, vent, ask for advice about sensitive issues. She pretended to have CF, be ill and have CF related problems, ask me if i'd ever done naughty things in hospital amoung other weirder things, and finally go to A&E (Which when it comes to CF, can mean life or death especially in covid times as we are high risk)
TLDR: EX pretended to have serious illness to stalk me in a private place for the last 5 months.
I have no idea what to do, or how to continue. It's been over a year since we broke up I thought it was in the past, I haven't talked to her since the day after asking her to never join again, and all this time she's been here I don't feel safe to talk to my good friends in the discord, or anything online because of her.
I have a feeling this wont be the last of it, so to my main point I was wondering if there's anything I can do to prevent this, or talk to about this to start a paper trail incase anything else happens.
Edit: She also started messaging my parents because I wouldn't respond

2020.07.24 21:35 StuckInSanDiego Hunting in California 101: How to Get Started (a Non-Definitive Guide)

Hunting in California 101: What I Wish I Knew When I Started

I swear it's really not as bad as people make it out to be.

Preface:

So you're probably reading this because you're interested in hunting in California and/or you're a new hunter who is struggling to do more than take a long walk in the woods with your weapon of choice. That or you just want to find all my mistakes and point them out. Great! This is written for you (even the pedants).
Since someone will ask, no I do not work for Fish and Wildlife. No I am not some professional guide or outfitter. I've just spent a lot of time hunting here as well as other states. I'm a transplanted software engineer on the Losing Side of Twenty-Five who fell victim to the sun and salary trap of San Diego and now I'm stuck. I've posted quite a bit on this subreddit before on a different Reddit account and even met with people from here. Then I lost the password to that account and I guess I never set up a recovery email. I'm bad with computers. Thank God I can fool my employer.

Part 0: How do I actually get started hunting in California?

Part 1: What do I really need for hunting?

Part 2: Tags, Stamps, and Points. Oh my!

Part 3: Finding Public Land to Hunt On

It's not that hard. I swear. There are 38,197,000 acres of public land--38% of the entire state--open to hunting. Is it hard to find GOOD hunting land not overrun by other hunters? Yes. That's why you scout and get used to hiking quite a bit. It's not impossible, however, and that's what matters.
Use OnX. No seriously. It's worth every cent. Every single time a new hunter asks me where to go my answer is OnX. I don't want to do a write-up on every amazing feature this software has to offer because they have a YouTube channel where they do it better than I ever could. That being said, there are a few things worth mentioning for people who are too lazy to watch some YouTube videos.
First - you can use OnX from both a PC and smartphone. I'm mentioning this because quite a few people I know were surprised when I told them the website works from PC. It's way easier to plan a hunt on a 27 inch monitor than a 5.8 inch phone. The website and the phone app are synced so if you add a marker to the website, it appears on the phone (and vice versa).
Second - check out the layers library and use them. As an example, you should have the layer for recent fires turned on when you're looking for bear, deer or elk opportunities. Again, I'm not sure why people don't realize this is available.
Third - use markers and colors which make sense. When I first started using OnX, I would mark everything in the most haphazard fashion. It's not useful. I suggest keeping it simple. If I think an area might have access I drop a yellow "A", if I confirm that it has access I drop a blue"A" and if it turns out there's no getting there I set a red "A". It makes it easy to read quickly. However, do whatever is easy and works for you. Just make sure you understand what you're looking at and you're consistent with it.
What kind of land can I hunt on? Legal Disclaimer: You should verify with all respective agencies and landowners that hunting is permitted at specific locations because I'm not responsible for you going to jail etc.
What Kind of land CAN'T I hunt on?
Will you tell me your secret spot?
I don't have one and none of my spots are secrets. They're all on public land. If you're really lost-in-space or just generally nervous about going somewhere you scouted through a website and you happen to be local to Southern California, just message me and I'll help out. It's really not that difficult though.

Part 4: Alternatives For When You Don't Get The Tag You Want

SHARE Hunts for Elk
This is a California-specific hunting opportunity. It's another lottery but it's an agreement between the state and private landowners to permit very regulated hunting on their properties. Each hunt is different and, again, this is a lottery so it's basically a moonshot; however, the odds of getting drawn on an elk tag is actually higher here than most general draws are with zero points. The money goes back into the program. The SHARE elk drawings close 7/24 this year. Which happens to be today. You can read more about the SHARE opportunities here. Enter through the online DFW license sales.
Leaving California (Hunting out-of-state): Since you can check out, but never leave, right? It's worth looking at other states.

Continued Here: Hunting In California 102: Draws, Deer, and Dove. Plus a bit on finding a hunting buddy.

I noticed a mistake!
Great! Comment below and I'll fix it. We're all human and I don't pretend to be infallible.
